Overview: Hard to believe I walked into this Louisville Original (established in 1972) for the first time today. The owner is still Ms. Streckfus, a Northern Italian expat who still maintains quite a bit of her accent (well, at least to a KY guy). Either way, she was very friendly and took time to talk shop with us about beer making and what she had available. The store is actually smallish, with about four total aisles of merchandise, split between wine and beer. As youíd expect, there are home brewing kits and extract recipe kits, but you can also build your own from her selection of materials. Malt-wise, she has both regular malts and extract, but only pellets for hops. I donít look at home-brew shops on a regular basis, but her prices seemed about right to me. PROS: Friendly, helpful owner; good, clean layout; good basic selection for the starting home brewer. CONS: Hop pellets only; not much in regards to specialty malts (only saw one variety of smoked malts, for instance). OVERALL: With My Old Kentucky Homebrew and Liquor Barn around, itís hard to justify a trip this far afield (about 30 mins. from my house) for my home brew needs. Her store is tucked into the back right corner of a shopping center, so keep that in mind when visiting. You wonít see it from the road.

This little "Mom and Pop" store is a wealth of supplies and knowledge for both beer and wine making. Mrs. Streckfus, the owner, will take her time to help you with the best supplies but will give you step by step instructions on how to use it. I spent an hour just walking around looking and noticed the prices were a few cents higher but everything I needed was there.

This is my local stop for HB supplies and ingredients. It has plenty to offer at a somewhat moderate price (plus the nice lady that owns it will often throw in little items for free with big purchases). Liquor Barn in Louisville also has a good supply (with a bit better prices), though this place has a more local, down-home feel. The woman also knows here shit regarding brewing (for the most part). Worth a stop for home brewers in the ville!

One of the better homebrew shops Iíve visited. Good advice and information from the owner on the wine side of things. Prices *used to be* very competitive to the larger online stores and they stock everything from canned beer kits to 50lb sacks of grain. Some of the more impressive things in stock are fruit presses, wine corkers, large boiling pots, kegerator supplies, etc. The husband and wife owners are from Italy and Germany and have been in business since the 70ís. I believe Dave may have passed away, so it is now Enedina running the place. They have a very reliable merchandise stock, although she is reluctant to special order grains and recently her prices have been raised significantly, Iíve had to knock off a few points unfortunately. Iíd like to support her 100%, but Liquor Barn is able to offer lower prices at the moment.
