This is from my October 2010 visit to this store. At the time of this original entry the 2 Madison locations were combined...Visited the Milwaukee St. location October 2010. The selection and prices were very impressive as compared to other Madison stores. While I have no complaints with either location, the Gammon Rd. store has more to offer.
I had a hard time finding the liquor section of this enormous food market, but when I did it was well worth the search. Significantly larger selection than Woodman’s Green Bay. Don’t let the relatively low avg. rating fool you; it is lower due to poor service and ambiance scores, the two things I think most folks can deal with as long as the selection and prices are great, which they are. And frankly, I like the ambiance. Has a lot more American craft singles (mostly bombers) than Woodman’s Green Bay. Yet, the best selection is of American craft sixers. Lowest prices for beer I have seen anywhere in a long time. Therefore, if you want to try out something new, the 6-pack wont set you back quite as much. You’ll find some surprises here as I did; 3 different Ale Asylum brews in bottles. I agree with others that the employees are a little grumpy. Perhaps they’re underpaid which helps explain the low beer prices. Just one thing to keep in mind when you go there....they accept CASH ONLY!!!!!!!
Great service, great selection, and great food (it is a grocery store!). Grab some food and grab any beer you like from Woodman’s. On top of all of that, in most cases they have the best prices on food (and alcohol).
Woodman’s has a great selection of beer, especially singles, plus they always have a "10% off when you build-your-own six pack" thing. The staff doesn’t seem super knowledgable about beer, but the selection is great and the price is hard to beat (I mean it’s Woodmans, come on!). I highly recommend stopping here at least once if you’re ever in Madison, WI.

Ok, Woodman’s is an absolute must-hit for the beer enthusiast living in or visiting Madison, WIsconsin. Stellar selection of WI beers, decent MI as well. Nothing wild as far as imports go, but above par for sure. The prices are great, the best I saw. Selection and prices may vary a little between the east and west side stores. The west seemed to have a bigger selection of imports.
I went to the one off of Milwaukee Street. This place was surprisingly stunning. The beer selection is massive, to say the least. The beer forms a U-shape at the back end of the part of the building where they sell alcohol. No credit cards accepted here, so just be aware if you don’t have debit or cash available, you’re fucked. I wish that they had a more extensive single selection, and this is only because I’m traveling. If I were a local, which I would hope to God that I never would be, this would be my store of choice, in Madison. You’re not going to get much help here, but most of us A.) don’t want it, and B.) don’t need it, so who cares, right? There prices are very competitive, and I’m glad to see that they’re busy. All of the Wisconsin locals that you’d expect to find are here. I’m probably going to head back before I leave.
This was easily the biggest beer section that I’ve seen at a Woodman’s to date. Had all the cans of Oskar Blues as well as the most recent New Glarus. Pretty much as good of a selection as you’re likely to find in Wisconsin. And the prices are great.
