In the residential back streets to the north of the gothic Cathedral, if you can find the Pilgrim, you’ll be able to see this pub from it. It’s a fairly traditional pub in its style, with three mostly open plan rooms with a mix of smaller regular tables and larger ones suitable for big groups. The pub’s a little worn looking in places, but it’s friendly and cosy enough, with threel cask ales available.

Again, not a huge selection but interesting handful in good condition.

I see the word ’Institution’ mentioned and whilst I wouldn’t know as a visitor, it sure was bustlin’ when I stopped by midweek. A good mix of local folk and the beers were in good nick. Much history.

Fairly basic boozer in the ’drinking’ quarter of Liverpool city centre. Steeped in Liverpudliness (this is where John and Cynthia Lennon had their first date). The exterior - with its pub signs from a bygone time - and the multi-roomed interior feel like a gentle and pleasant time warp. Old style rock and roll, soul, doo-wop, Bowie and Springteen take their turns on the slightly-too-loud music system. Brusque but efficient service. And the beer? Mostly Northern breweries, nothing too outlandish here but it will be served to perfection. Only five taps when I came in. Thwaites Original for £2.00 per pint! One not to skip.

Cosy, classic English pub. It’s a bit hidden from the crowd of a main street. The service is very nice and helpful. Mostly real ales. will be back when in Liverpool again.

A classic back-street boozer. From the outside it looked like this place was shut down. But inside I found a lively, albeit gritty, low-ceilinged affair. The place is well beaten in (the staff and the fixtures) but everyone seemed in good spirits and the beers were good. Mostly traditional style beers on cask. Solid value. Lots of I retesting ephemera and memorabilia on the walls. Diverse clientele. I loved the low-key, salt-of-the-earth vibe of this place. I would recommend a visit.

characterful old pub with juke box with old boy singing along. 4 cask ales on, golden ales and bitters..not the most inspiring. Friendly service and clientèle though

One of many excellent pubs in the Georgian Quarter of town. We got a warm welcome when we arrived on a Tuesday afternoon in April. People at the pub were celebrating the passing away of a former prime minister in Britain. A freehouse just off Hope St offering a range of six cask ales, mostly from regional breweries. A rather cozy place with a few interesting Beatles memorabilia as John Lennon used to drink here in the late 1950s. Elvis and Pogues from a jukebox, otherwise music free (visited, 09.04.2013).

This is a lovely small cousy pub close to The City centre. But not that many tourists find this little gem. Good beer selection, both on tap and bottles. Lovely patio!

Visited in januar 2012 on our pre-winter-ale-pubcrawl.. Small old pub, very cosy place. Good selection of beers, served well conditioned. Staff very friendly :-) Think this pub is a must visit one, if in Liverpool, because of the history of all the famous people that had been by to have a pint or 2...
