Very pleasant little heritage type place, possibly a bit on the touristy side of things for my preferences.

Probably has the best claim to oldest surviving pub in the city (1621). A beautiful area, one of the oldest in the city, remains of one of the old city walls run by here, and there’s an intersection with a great view on all sides: the Nikolaikirche’s spires to one side, the Fernsehturm to another, zur Letzten Instanz on the third, and the fourth with the Neues Stadthaus and the still-stubby Parochialkirche. Place itself exudes a sort of worn elegance. Not a good beer list, but local, and I’ll never turn down a Märkischer Landmann. Small, enclosed Biergarten outside, shaded and breezy and very, very pretty. Bathroom doors were a hoot.

The place is historical and indeed nicely decorated. The beer is standard Kindl products, and don’t expect staff to care/know/inform much about it anyway. Visit because it’s a tourist thing and you can’t find a cosier place to have your Märkischer Landmann

Berlin’s oldest pub and restaurant, and a gem of a building. Dark brown wood panelling throughout with cream emulsion on upper walls and ceiling. Quarry-tiled floor. Ornate chandeliers and pendant light fixtures afford warm tungsten lighting. Pub is furnished with diners in mind, an dbooking is recommended. Up to four hbeers dispensed from an ornately decorated fount and those I tried on my 28 Sept 2009 visit were in top condition.
