74 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 t0rin0 (184) La Verne, California | March 24, 2013 Visited March 22, 2013.
Cool place. Great music (got to hear some Danzig and a few other good bands before leaving). The tap list is interesting but confusing since they don’t believe in putting the brewery name on the list. Took a few minutes to figure out what they all were and realized that a good chunk of them were Ommegang beers, not that that’s a bad thing. Saw a couple of interesting new beers as well. If I had some business in this area I’d stop back in, and eventually I will since Pine Street Brewery will eventually open and it will need to be ticked.
Be warned that this place is cash only, though like Toronado there is an ATM in the building. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 prawlie (41) , England | March 20, 2013 Nice bar for a late night drink, friendly enough with a good selection and decent prices. | 46 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 1/20 badlizard (130) Berkeley , California | December 10, 2012 Great selection at reasonable prices. Wish I could have had a beer here. No credit cards. I should have anticipated that it would be cash only since it’s in the Tenderloin (if you don’t know the City, imagine any post apocalyptic wasteland and you’ll have an idea of the neighborhood). Yeah, they’ve got an ATM, but getting hit with bank fees isn’t really a convenience to me. The short of it: if I’m walking out of your beer bar without a beer, you’ve got problems. Skip it. Go to City Beer. They have all the same selection (and more), and they take credit cards. So while Amsterdam gets points for selection, they lose points for being cash only, being in terrible location, and for making me walk through the Tenderloin only to leave without a drink. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 Toerstig (28) Uppsala, Sweden | February 9, 2012 Great knowledgeable personnel with a good eye for service. Besides that they have a good beer selection. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 16/20 tiong (31) Espoo, Finland | January 28, 2012 A nice, quite small place a few blocks away from Union Square. A nice selection of local and American craft beer on tap and a quite large selection of small bottles as well. Very cheap prices, especially for some of the bottled beers. Be aware that they only accept cash. | 94 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 18/20 magdalar (16) Zurich, Switzerland | December 4, 2011 I love this place. It’s always laid back, and never really crowded. The bar staff is friendly and knowledgable, and will encourage better beer selections to the numerous people that come in asking for Stella or Bud (they don’t even carry any of the standard American rice beers) -- but never pretentious, just helpful.
They used to also do hookah, but no longer.
Food policy is "bring what you’d like", though it’s always polite to ask first (and please, avoid things that stink up the place -- I’d like my beer not to smell of garlic). | 68 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 WeeHeavySD (111) San Diego (Hillcrest), California | March 25, 2011 This place is far from a fantastic beer bar, but it has both a pretty solid tap list and a more than decent bottle list. Place itself is somewhat small and cramped with a lot of hooka smoking going around. Ended up drinking a bottle of Fantome Saison, for only $15, which is really not a bad markup for Fantome. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 18/20 PlanetTripper (1) San Francisco, | April 22, 2010 The bar is fairly new but the owner Kelly is very enthusiastic about becoming a beer geek’s destination. They have 150 beers to choose from and they are working up to 200. If they don’t have your beer they will order it. And they have at least one event a week. Give ’em your love! |
