84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 jercraigs (234) Toronto, Ontario | May 5, 2013 2013-04-26. Pretty small, but actually a bit bigger than I had pictured based on descriptions elsewhere. We went twice while in Waterbury. Quick drinks Friday night, when it was PACKED. We were lucky to get seats at the bar when we did. Enjoyed some Hill Farmstead and Lawson’s Finest on tap. Lunch the next day was pretty quiet with only a handful of other people there. Had a Citizen Cider and Zero Gravity today which impressed less than those last night but were new to us. I tried the carnitas and chicken tacos which were excellent, but simpler than what I was expecting. I think I probably just havent had "real" tacos before. Would definitely come back. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 tom10101 (36) Quebec | April 29, 2013 Small pub, nice ambiance. The guy who served us the beer know what he’s talking about. Decent selection, but they were out of Lawson’s when I went there. Didn’t try the food. Price were ok. Nice place. Worth the visit. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 ThirstyBird (14) Düsseldorf, Germany | March 30, 2013 They had 17 beer on tap and one on cask the last time I visited. They have expanded since my last visit a couple of years ago and it is helpful in finding room to settle in to try all the tasty brew. Friendly service and friendly folks drinking on all sides of me. I ordered a couple of very tasty tacos - chatted with the cook who was a cool guy. Overall a really fun experience on a Sunday afternoon. | 98 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 20/20 Pivoyager (72) Gaithersburg, Maryland | February 13, 2013 The Blackback Pub and Flyshop is one of several excellent venues along the Main Street of Waterbury – see my review for Prohibition Pig, which is across the street. The décor is that your grandfather’s country lodge: heather green walls and vey heavy on the fishing paraphernalia, which is scattered throughout this small bar. What I liked was the availability of several Farmstead beers; this in itself makes for a worthy trip. The service was friendly and efficient. No food is served, but then you’ll probably pig out at the aforementioned Prohibition Pig prior to your visit here.
A leisurely quaff at the Blackback Pub brings to mind an old, and appropriate, adage:
“Give a Man a fish and he’ll eat for the day; teach him to fish and he’ll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.” Wise.
| 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 lushawn (227) Massachusetts | February 10, 2013 awesome place. mad taco tacoes are a little too good. whole bunch of hill farmstead brews on tap. some lawson’s as well. nice building. laid back joint. tight place. | 90 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 adamjackson (112) Lyme, New Hampshire | December 14, 2012 This is an awesome shop. Cantillon Kriek on tap and a great selection of local beers. It feels like a pub and you almost always make friends. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 j12601 (262) Poughkeepsie, New York | October 29, 2012 Watch your step when you walk in. Seriously, it’s on the door I read it, and still nearly bit it. As did others on the way in. Anyhow, I came up here with Max on our way to Hill Farmstead for the weekend. Came in the early afternoon on a Friday and while it was not crowded, as the bar is not overly large and probably sits maybe 8-10 people comfortably. The taps here are great, nice variety of Hill Farmstead, Lawson’s, and a good amount of other tougher to come by offerings from the rest of the world. Must have been 5-6 Hill beers on tap, and 3-4 Lawson’s. Worth coming in just for that, and the rest of the tap list certainly didn’t hurt. There’s not a food menu, but they have cheese plates, and pizzas. We went with a pizza (and then we went with one more). Not what I would expect from a pizza, the crust was something more of a flaky bread thing, and the whole thing came across a little bit like an upstate NY tomato pie with cheese on it than pizza, but it was quite good and I know I’ll get one the next time I’m here as well. This place plus Prohibition Pig have me wanting to take a weekend trip to Waterbury just to sit around their bars all weekend long. Absolutely worth a visit, and probably worth a multi-hour drive just to make that visit. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 orangesol (73) Pennsylvania | October 23, 2012 Stopped in here after my dinner at the Pig. Atmosphere was nice, it is not the biggest place in the world but I easily got a seat at the bar and was greeted by a very nice bartender. She ran me through the tap list and offered a few thoughts on some of the ones I had not tried yet which was awesome. They had a bunch of Hill Farmsteads on as well as a few Lawson’s so I stuck with those. I went with the HF Simcoe single hop and the Lawson’s Hunger Mountain 40th and they were both excellent and sever in the correct glasses.
My food score is not indicative of how it tasted, rather how much they offer. Food was sparse upon my visit but I hear they are upgrading the kitchen very soon so I look forward to seeing what they come up with in the future. I got the cheese plate and it was very good and totally worth the money. Overall a really awesome beer bar that I will definitely return to when I am in the area. | 80 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 Sammy (466) Toronto, Ontario | August 16, 2012 Exceptional place to have a beer. Smallish in size, but big in quality, with top notch HF and Lawson Liquid offerings. People were friendly and relaxed, its a go-to place for knowledgeable beer drinkers from the region and from Montreal. Knowledgeable includes staff. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 Huhzubendah (30) Washington DC | July 26, 2012 Stopped here on my recent trip to Vermont. I’m so glad I did.
Available on draft were pretty much all the beers on my Vermont beer wish list. Heady Topper, Double Sunshine, and nine Hill Farmstead brews, including Abner, Society and Solitude #3 and #4, Everett, Florence, Edward, What is Enlightenment?, and Harlan. Wow.
Service was excellent, as was the vibe. A small, cozy place with only a few regulars chatting and watching the Red Sox game. The bartender offered half pours, allowing me the opportunity to enjoy a few more rounds.
Overall, this was a fabulous little place. I will absolutely return here first on my next trip to the lovely state of Vermont. |
