Great place, fantastic ambiance, amazing food, exceptional beer. Beer is very nicely priced and the food is a little bit expensive, but it’s all worth it. And the hike up the hill is pretty, and it overlooks the majority of the town.

This place is one of my favorite places in the world to drink. Amazing cellar atmosphere with great ambiance. The beers are some of Germany’s finest, especially the Weissbiers. It didn’t hurt that there was a sexy 20ish waitress with huge cans serving us. If Jehova spoke to me right now and told me that I could only visit one beer spot before being condemned, I would choose Weihenstephaner. Update: roll me in here on my death bed. Pure heavenly bliss. Beautiful beer garden, kick ass cellar restaurant, and best beer on earth.

Spent 3 hours here on the last Sunday afternoon of November ’11. Upon arrival at 2.15pm - the place was packed with groups comprised largely of families lunching, but by the time we left it was mostly empty! There are many different rooms, probably 4 or 5 inside, plus a large beer garden that was not open at this time of year. The room we chose was down a small flight of stairs and resembled a medium sized cellar. A string quartet was playing in the corner for the first hour we were there. To the business end ... 8 beers available on tap on my visit, so I worked my way 0.3l (available on most) ipours. I visited, Helles, Dunkels, Weiss, Dunkels Weiss, Korbinium, Pils, St Vitus Bock and finished by sharing a bottle of ’Infinium’ the champagne beer in collaboration with Sam Adams - served by the waiter into ’Infinium’ flutes, whilst the bottle rested in an iced bucket The service was very good and they soon adapted to our pace of drinking and my 2 x 0.3l to my friends 0.5 ! The food was amongst the best I have experienced in my many trips to Germany. This day was the last of a 3 week ’game’ festival, so I opted for the Game stew. Amazing !!! Hare Hock, Roast Boar and Venison steak with dumplings and red cabbage! Cannot recommend highly enough and will visit in the summer next time to sample the beer garden. From Munchen you can catch an RE train (23 mins) to Freising Hbf. From here it is a 15/20 minute walk or E7.50 in a cab. We got a cab back to Munchen Airport for E25 which is worth knowing.

Advertised as the oldest brewery in the world. We checked out the main hall and the kellar, very atmospheric. Beers are the usual Weihenstephan stuff, but I think this is the tastiest weizen beers around.

We were there a bit too early, 10 am, so it wasn’t possible to get any warm food but bartender was kind enough to get as something to eat while we were enjoying the Weihenstephaner brews. Reasonable prices, especially beers were cheap. Good service. Nice place. There are also great views from the garden nearby to the city of Freising and German Alps. Now it wasn’t. It was too foggy. 11 beers on taps. And Infinium in 750 ml bottles available. Definitely worth visiting.

First about the brewery tour: it’s really good. I’ve done my fair share of brewery visits and this tour is one of the best I ever had. The guide was not some schmuck they paid to show people around, no, he was a graduated student from the Weihenstephan brewery university and about to start his PhD, he was able to answer almost all my specific questions about the installations and the brewing techniques. A job well done. Now about the Bräustüberl. Despite being in the middle of a university campus, it feels as if you’re somewhere near a forest or something. Nice Biergarten with decent benches and tables. A self service style restaurant, but that’s ok. Just might need a bit more explanation or clearer menu’s for foreign people. (I can’t always tell what food is which, just by looking at it.) Also self service for the beers, which I think is a bit lame. In a Biergarten I like to be served. But people were friendly. Overall it’s definitely worth checking out the place and having a few beers and some food. Cosy place and should I be around, I’d visit again. Don’t forget the beer shop nearby, with fair prices for bottles. A good way to complete your Weihenstephan beer list. (I’m almost there, just need to find one or two more bottles ;-)

A really nice, cozy, place on top of the hills of Freising besides the brewery. Nice, clean, simple woody interior with loads of Bavarian colors around. The food was good, but the beer, naturally, is what makes the place great. Really fresh and excellent. The selection is naturally limited to the own brewery’s products, but there’s still more than the couple of wesses I can find in local stores.

Comes on the heels of my visit to Andechs, and offers an pilgrimage of a different kind. There’s no doubting the importance of the Freising area to world brewing (especially supplies!), but the beers are available all over and there’s not too much of a value add in coming to the source. View from the garden is ... unspectacular, and to be honest, bland. Didn’t eat, beer was super fresh and a little more explosively flavorful than I remember (yeastier and esterier). Really looking forward to getting back for the inside rooms, though, and I could easily see this rating jump another twenty points.

Nice beer garden. Superb beers. Food and service were not top though. Still a nice escape from the city.

December 2011. For anyone traveling via Munich airport, if you don’t spend your last night in Freising and climb the hill to Weihenstephan, than shame on you! That’s precisely what we did on our last night in Germany, and we couldn’t have been happier. This place is amazing. With a great view of the town and a warm, welcoming environment, you simply can’t beat sipping on the awesome Weihenstephaner offerings just steps from their kettles and munching on the savory regionally classic meals. It was a bit pricey, but well worth it, and I’ll go back in a second next time we make the trek to Bavaria. (Brewery #570)
