86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 leejackson (8) Texas | April 13, 2013 A pretty wide selection of beers, however I wish they had more stuff on tap. Still a very enjoyable place to go to try a some new brews. | 78 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 17/20 Dogbrick (561) Columbus, Ohio | November 5, 2012 (Visited 08/2012): This Flying Saucer location is in the North Loop of Austin on 47th Street. There is a parking garage and street parking in the surrounding area. ,br>
The place has a big patio out front, and inside it is open with a winding bar in the rear and segmented rooms with table and couch seating. Lots of windows allow for people watching. Namesake saucers adorn the walls and there are star-shaped chandeliers and fans. Chalkboard behind the bar listing the beers.
Speaking of the beers, as with other locations there are over 70 taps with lots of local options like (512), Austin Beerworks, Deep Ellum and Real Ale. Other microbreweries are represented too. Lots of bottles too from breweries like Deschutes, Stone, Lagunitas and Green Flash. Some imports as well. Several different flights/samplers are offered included a Texas-specific one.
Service on a busy weekday was pretty good. The server was friendly and had a working knowledge of the beer offerings for the most part.
Food at Flying Saucer is usually decent, and the sandwich I had on this visit was pretty good.
Overall the chain aspect and big crowds kind of detract from this place but I found it suitable for a decent meal and trying a few Texas beers. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 Tim Webb (173) Cambridge, England | October 16, 2012 I am not normally a fan of pub chains - they seem to be an excuse to demand disocunts from brewers who cannot really afford to give them. However I was really impressed by the FS chain on our flying visit. Good food, loads of beers, paying attention to local producers, giving drinkers a warm place to sit. This one hit the spot. | 76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 joebudzjoe (43) Connecticut | July 28, 2012 Visited this spot when I had a few hours to spare before my flight putt of Austin. It’s located away from downtown, so there’s plenty of parking. I sat at the bar, service was prompt and the bartender was a babe. There is plenty of seating outside too. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 Terminus (278) Las Cruces, New Mexico | July 2, 2012 Im a sucker for these places! This is my 4th FS and i am really impressed by this one. lots of great taps mostly texas and imports however, they have a few rare ones from time to time. they have Boulevard Love Child #2 in bottles and im kicking myself that i didnt get it! Very friendly, attractive and knowledgeable waitresses doesnt hurt either! A must stop in Austin if you ask me. | 78 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 Mora2000 (74) McKinney, Texas | July 1, 2012 Not too much to say about this place, other than it is pretty much like all the other Flying Saucer locations I have been to. That is not a bad thing, since they have 80+ beers on tap plus a ton in bottles. Food is decent, but this place is all about the beer. This is located within five minutes of Black Star and Draught House, and only a little further from North by Northwest. | 80 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 Bluzee (8) Belton, Alabama | June 28, 2012 I had a very good experience here. I have several of their flights of beer, which offered an excellent selection. | 68 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 14/20 ben4321 (163) Hoboken, New Jersey | March 7, 2012 This is the 2nd Flying Saucer I’ve visited, and not surprisingly, it is pretty similar to the other one. They had a decent selection of local/area type of beers, much better then the Little Rock one in that regard, but that is more due to the lack of beer in Arkansas then any issue with this restaurant. It seemed like they had a decent set-up, it was fairly crowded but manageable. The staff seemed to be beer clue-less, but I went in expecting that.
| 70 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 Caytinator (63) Tucson, Arizona | March 5, 2012 I can’t believe I’ve been to 5 FS’s! Ugh. That said, this one is pretty good. The location is far enough from downtown to attract a mostly yuppy crowd. The outdoor seating here is tits, perfect to enjoy a lazy weekday evening in "the triangle". I always give them a "10/15" on selection because I have to remember to think of 3 beers I want for them to have 1 in stock. Service OK. | 58 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 1/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 11/20 rivertranced (13) Denver, Colorado | January 31, 2012 This place is a garbage hole. OK, I didn’t mean that. But it is definitely not a great place to get a beer if that is your primary intention. It’s beauty lies in its centrality and solid beer selection, so it’s a great place to meet friends if you know what you are looking for. My problem with this place is the knowledge of the staff. I figure, if you work in a beer bar you should know something about beer. You don’t need to be a cicerone, but you should know the difference between and ale and a lager, or perhaps something about the role of hops in beer. I’m certain that the bartenders must know a little more, but in the handful of times I’ve been in here I’ve walked out knowing less about beer after speaking with the waitresses. |
