Me and Loz visited here on Saturday 15th March 2014. This was my first visit here and I have to say despite the heavy weight of expectation from all of the positive reviews and comments that Iíd heard this certainly lived up to its Premier League billing, it was fab! This place is close to Cloisters another fine stop off but it is a million miles away in terms of beer variety and choice. The bat is literally right on the street, a flat fronted pub with a rather amusing but down at heel DIY looking sign, inside however things start to look much more professional, albeit pallets and old kegs etc are put to use for lighting attachment, sinks and a cistern, novel maybe but looks good. The bar is in front to the left as you enter with the beer board on the same side, there is a raised area to the right and it looked like additional seating downstairs. I thought the beer choice was excellent with a good many of the regions of the UK represented the bottle selection looked equally impressive. I had a superb Summer Wine Devil IPA Centennial on keg, Loz had a Hopcraft Golden Pixie on cask both were great. The staff were knowledgable and approachable, the place was quite busy for 4-5 on a Saturday afternoon. This is easily up there with the best in the UK, great bar.

Well ive given this place time to settle to get a better feel for it. So here goes. The hanging bat has a lot to recomend it, 14 Keg lines and 6 Cask lines as well as a considerable bottle selection. But its not not all about the numbers its the care taken in the selection. With the likes of Kernel, magic Rock and Harbour, on regularly as part of the rotating guest list, and the likes of Hawkshead , Moor and Luckie forming part of there Permanent theres a Garentee of Interesting beers and Its not uncommon to find 4-5 beers above 6% on at any one time. But this place has more to offer than just beer. The layout and Decor make this a very comfortable bar, some where you can easily pop into for a 10 minute quicky or spend several hour being slowly seduced by its delights. Food is well done and well priced, offering filling and snacky alternatives. With Regular meet the brewer events its possible to see 10-20 brews from one of the more intersting UK breweries on at the same time. But for me the one thing that puts the Icing on the Cake is that it Allows Children. While Edinburgh has many great pubs sadly too many of them are not child friendly, so to find a Bar this good that we can go out as a family to is a delight.
SO were into a new Year and this place is going strong, its amazing the beer you can find in here on a Random monday night like last night. Which Just makes it such a great place to have a drink on the way home, but its also nice to sit on a quietish weekend afternoon playing a game with the kids while having a couple of beers, but the Thing that really lift this place to Truely stunning is the Beer events about once a month a brewer will appear and the Bar will showcase their beer, often taking up all 20(21) lines

A superb bar and addition to the Edinburgh beer scene. The beers are constantly rotating so itís worthwhile keeping an eye on the board. I like the way that you buy tokens (bottle caps) when you want to taste small samples and that they do not have to all be used in one go. I wish more bars were like that.

Great place with loads of beers to choose from. Was very busy on Saturday night, but we managed to get a seat downstairs.
Huge tattoo on the neck/chest of the barmaid was not to our liking.

Nicely decked out bar on Lothian road in central Edinburgh. 12 keg beers available on tap, 4 cask ales and a very extensive list of bottled beers. Great service and good food menu. Nano brewery on view out the back. Very popular.

Most things works well here and they seemed to be doing everything right. Itís a medium sized place with comfortably seating areas on three levels promoting an airy and cozy atmosphere. Friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff. Good homemade food, beef ribs and American sausages, among others. Great range of interesting and tasty British ales on cask and keg (six cask ales, 14 on kegs) supported by an extensive menu of bottled beers from around the world. The cask and keg beers had a very fast rotation. I stayed in Edinburgh for five days and visited the pub every day, and the list on the blackboard was never the similar to the day before. Great praise for the Beer Flights, five third pint tasters for a few quid. With the Alpha project the Hanging Bat can now be labeled a brewpub. Music was also ok, Elvis Costello, early Bob Dylan and Scottish rock groups. Clean, fancy, and spacious toilets. A little beer garden at the rear of the pub. Even being located at the central Lothian road the pub is rather anonymous and not that easy to spot. Popular place all through the day visited by varied clientele. A new favourite, indeed (Visited 7th-11th August 2013).

My local at my recent visit to Edinburgh, and a favourite as well, with well kept beers, cask and keg. Interesting selection, and there was always something new and exciting on at all my visits. Was offered samples as well, always a nice habit.
Nice modern interior.

The best beer bar in Edinburgh (possibly in Scotland?). Went there a handful of times whilst back in the Burgh for a week. The beer keeps on changing and being replaced with something else that I really want to drink. Thereís such a big range and the care with which the beer is selected is unparalelled. Theyíve got a good selection of bottles although with all the keg and cask to choose from, I didnít get in to them. Split levels. I liked sitting on the top floor at the window looking out at the degenerates on Lothian Road. I never ordered any food but I had some of Bens wings. They were acceptable.
