64 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 14/20 luttonm (96) Belgrade, Serbia | December 5, 2012 Walk in to what looks like a normal Balkan corner store but quickly you see a (by local standards) astounding selection of beers in the fridges. All of the major interesting Croatian beers, including those (like Vukovarsko) which are from the other side of the country. Already some boys hanging out outside in the evening, even in winter. The spot to be for low-key beer hunting in Split. I found a German beer that I hadn’t rated before and hadn’t seen elsewhere in Croatia so far. | 70 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 14/20 heavy (61) Split, Croatia | October 9, 2012| Updated December 17, 2012 A small liquor store within the UNESCO preserved core of Split city, as pointed out by Marko you can find many Croatian beers that are otherwise not available in the region. Prices are higher than supermarkets, but not for much as it’s typical for beer shops around Europe. Good to visit before the evening, when it can be really crowded and impossible to choose if you don’t know what to take.
Small update: Selection gets better and better, seems like the owner really got into turning this to a mini beershop, not only Croatian beers. He stays away from more expensive Belgian stuff though. Probably wise for the location. | 62 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 13/20 abemorsten (103) Mosterøy, Norway | July 21, 2012| Updated December 17, 2012 Found 14 beers that I hadn’t tried before, and they cold stored them for me for a few hours so I could pick them up just before I left. I had brought a print out of Croatias 50 best beers according to Ratebeer. The owner strongly disagreed on both style and nationality on quite a few beers on the list. Refreshing encounter | 60 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 11/20 Marko (188) Split, Croatia | July 13, 2012| Updated December 17, 2012 What’s probably the best store in Split for beer looks from the outside (and the inside) like a tiny grocery store relict left over from the Yugoslavian times, a dying sort that’s rapidly disappearing over the last 20 years, losing to cheaper chain stores, supermarkets and malls. What’s holding this one alive is the fact that it’s located on Matejuška -> one of the most popular (and central) places younger people go out drinking in Split. Combine the constant need for alcohol supplies there with an owner (a biker to boot) who is apparently somewhat interested in beer -> you get the only place where you can easily get the entire bottled and canned ranges of most breweries that bottle and can in Croatia, including Velebitsko and Staročeško which are damn rare in stores in this part of Croatia. Unless you want to go to a pub, this is the best place to stock up on those if you’re only visiting Dalmatia. Mind you, it’ll be really croewded in the evening, and drunken people pushing in 2m by 2m space can be a bit annoying. The staff are efficient at what they do (it would’ve been a catastrophe if they weren’t). You’ll pay quite a bit more than in regular stores, but hey, you likely won’t find some of the beers they have cheaper in Split. |
