100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 babymaddy (1) richmond, Virginia | December 19, 2012 I have meant to write a review of Mekong since I first got on this site but kept forgetting to do so. First, the food is delicious and inexpensive. The beer selection, the comraderie and An’s events make this the go to bar in Richmond. If you are there on your birthday there is a good chance you will end up "konged" as An likes to serve up a goldfish bowl of beer to celebrate. There are often beers available at Mekong that otherwise would not make it into Virginia and it is the site of the monthly James River Homebrewers club meetings. When Mekong was voted best craft bar in the US, they celebrated by selling all of their drafts for a dollar. If you are within 100 miles of this place, you need to make a stop here! Mekong is for beer lovers. | 68 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 RABinVA (44) Fredericksburg, Virginia | December 18, 2012 I went to Mekong to eat awhile back before I was 21 while still living in Richmond. Since I moved all of my friends now spend a ton of time there always raving about the beer. And of course it was just rated #1 on CraftBeer.com. And well, I went back and it’s still good, but the mythos of the Mekong beer experience has been a bit overblown I think. They have some interesting stuff, but as others have mentioned it’s very unorganized. Service was slow (and we had a big party, and the rest of the place was empty).
The food is above average, and it’s good portions for a pretty good price.
the owners enthusiasm for beer outweighs the bar’s actual selection. | 66 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 5/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 GT2 (344) Riverslime, California | December 3, 2012 I was very disappointed with our visit here. A quick side trip off I-95 in a suburban strip mall, decent parking available, we came for beer and dinner. Service was slow even though the restaurant was only 10% full, beer list large, but unorganized. No one knew what beer was on tap right in front of me and multiple beer tap lists were flying around some with kegs that had kicked days ago. The beer I had no one knew what it was. They did allow samples which was nice and I’m not sure if they were charged or not. Tap list is large, nothing really caught my eye though. Some bizzare beers on tap were actually mixtures of unknown beers combined into a seemingly real beer that had a brewery name and beer name. I asked about those and was told, "You know Ommegang Hennepin? Well we can just make that here by blending other beers." What? Bottle list enormous, but nothing of interest either. Food was just not up to par. Peanut curry sauce was not good. The food was bland or greasy. Rice paper spring rolls very poor. Fried baby squid was very good, but so much was on the plate this one needed to be shared in a big group like calamari. They did not have soft tendon Pho which is a common staple. That just blew my mind. The menu probably has 300 different dishes you can order, which is a pet peev of mine. Can reduce the menu down to 20 items. Decor is drab 1990s Asian restaurant. Didn’t really "flow" for me: the theme, the food, the beer. Disjointed and needing an overhaul. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 zizzybalubba (71) Elizabeth City, North Carolina | November 2, 2012 Stopped here for lunch recently based on recommendations from this site. Honestly, when I first drove in to the parking lot I though I was being Punk’d. However, when I entered the restaurant it all made sense. The wall behind the checkout is covered with several "Best Of Richmond" and "All About Beer" magazine covers. In the corner are several magnums of various craft beers. The theme is Vietnamese as you may guess from the name and the restaurant certainly carries this decor as well but it makes certain you know this is a beer destination. Service was outstanding. The selection of beers was well above average. The food was good although I am far from an expert on Vietnamese food. The food was very reasonably priced. The beer prices were average for similar establishments. Overall a must if in Richmond and worthy of its praise as a beer establishment. | 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 18/20 GODiSSOUTHERN (20) Virginia | August 12, 2012 I miss this place. Great selection. Personal attention to details and amazing food. Quirky place that has no rivals. | 96 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 Loschafin (1) Midlothian, Virginia | May 29, 2012 Great Place, great people hang out. Not pretentious or too hipster. Mainly musicians, artists and people who really enjoy great beer. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 DiarmaidBHK (523) Pennsylvania | May 27, 2012 It’s impossible to enter this place and not see the passion for beer this place has. Not only are the walls of the restaurant and the bar being covered with beer memorabilia, but so is the entranceway. The restaurant and the bar area are separated in clearly delineated rooms. I didn’t check out the bottle list because the draft list was so good. They had over 20 taps including 3 they’ve been saving since 2009. They have such an attention to detail they not only the beer but what kind of glass it’s going to be served in. The food is fantastic, reasonable priced, and very large portions. I’ll definitely be back. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 17/20 magsinva (125) Virginia | May 26, 2012 The bar is in the back, beer drinkers should definitely head there to see all the taps. The place is covered in beer posters and the beer list is pure quality, split 60/40 US/Belgium. The staff at the bar is knowledgeable about what they are serving, which isnt surprising considering the beer list. Enjoy some Pho, a nice craft beer and the game on TV! | 92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 Travlr (999) Washington, Washington DC | April 7, 2012 Sculpin IPA on tap at a Vietnamese restaurant? Yes. A Randell that pulls Stone Ruination through citra hops, ginger and fresh chili, at an Asian restaurant? Of course. You can only be at Mekong when you see these things. And by the way, the food is excellent. Oh, and the prices are terrific. And, of course, the staff is a riot, and they know a ton about beer. What more do you need? It’s nirvana. | 82 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 15/20 BeerDrummer (10) , | March 21, 2012 This place is beer heaven. The next day you can come back for some Pho to cure the hangover. Brilliant!
