84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 artmcd8 (43) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | April 28, 2013 Typical pub look and feel. The food is quite filling and good as a compliment to beer. Get the boxty for brunch. It won’t disappoint. | 92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 charule (27) Pennsylvania | April 26, 2013 One of our favorite places. Better whiskey selection then beer but still amazing. Well done take on British Isle food. Okay prices. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 cratez (151) Toronto, Ontario | April 12, 2013| Updated April 16, 2013 When I visited: Late summer 2012.
What I had: Over the course of two visits - Tröegs Sunshine Pils, Yards Extra Special Ale, Tröegs The Mad Elf Holiday Ale, Fat Heads Gudenhoppy Pils, Elysian The Immortal IPA (all on tap), Grilled Apricot Salmon, Scottish Shortbread Ice Cream Sandwich, entree and white wine for the lady.
What I liked: Really cool English-style pub with an awesome low key ambiance, quick and inviting servers, killer beer selection, outstanding food (way more than just pub grub), glad to hear The Shins on rotation.
What I disliked: On the second visit we were seated in the dining area and felt a bit cramped, but that’s a minor quibble.
Would I go back? For sure. This authentic UK pub does the "sports and ales" thing very well. A true gem in Pittsburgh.
Overall Rating: 88 | 72 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20 MrChopin (100) Baltimore, Maryland | November 7, 2011| Updated November 11, 2011 My favorite place in the city. The food is considerably more interesting than either Smokin’ Joes or Fatheads, the environment is way more chill and the bar itself a lot more interesting, though the back is just a glorified restaurant. The beer selection is way smaller than either of the others, but it’s more interesting and fresh, and there’s typically a gem or two that craft beer n00bs would miss in favor of the 50+ taps over-the-head hitting at the other two places (like Victory’s Summer Love). Also the best scotch selection in the city. And Hart works here, so stop in and say hi knowing you’ll get amazing service and recommendations when he’s around. | 38 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 2/10 SELECTION 6/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 3/10 OVERALL 7/20 flyer50 (48) Seattle, Washington | November 20, 2010| Updated November 11, 2011 Locals at Fathead’s across the street sent me here to try an East End Big Hop IPA.
Nice tidy British style pub. My bartender was a jerk. The food menu looked great, was ready to order but the bartender seemed preoccupied and annoyed at my presence. Decided to head back downtown for dinner at Sharp Creek Bistro instead.
Beer selection limited, but some good locals on tap. Enjoyed my East End Big Hop IPA, but it didn’t measure up to Fat Head’s Head Hunter I had across the street. Next time I’m in Pitt, will give them another try. | 68 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20 JohnnyJ (96) San Diego, California | June 25, 2010| Updated November 11, 2011 Darker bar feel, but not dirty. Selection is okay. Didn’t stay very long, but only because of time restraints. I liked the atmosphere and service. | 62 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 7/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 12/20 Beerman6686 (92) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | May 18, 2010| Updated November 11, 2011 Ambiance is typical pub atmosphere, nothing standing out but nothing offsetting. Bar service was very helpful and fast. Selection, was typical pub, ie. Irish and English beers, and the occasional East End tap. Always nice to have cask beer though. Beers were priced reasonalby but nothing to go out of the way for. Overall a nice pub atmosphere, showing european sports such as soccer and rugby. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 18/20 WildJohn (1) , Pennsylvania | February 12, 2009| Updated November 11, 2011 Pipers is absolutely one of my favorite places- period! Drew really loves his work, and it shows. Brittish ex-pats on Saturday for football, but a very well-rounded clientell most times. Great Sunday brunch (a rarity in Pittsburgh). Drew’s cask-conditioned selection is limited because he won’t bring in just anything, preferring to work with near-by brewers- but he’s expanding his territory a little.
And- it’s the only place to watch Six Nations Rugby (albeit, a day late) unless you have a satelite. GO! NOW! | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 Nate (258) Indiana, Pennsylvania | November 17, 2008 Had dinner here with my wife on a Saturday night - it was about 6pm and there was a Penguins game that night. We still got seated within 5 minutes. Only one cask ale available out of three, but several great standard taps. Great bottle selection and the whiskey... wow.
The food was terrific and the portions were immense. I ended up taking home a doggie bag and had a very big lunch the next day.
Would definitely go again and highly recommend it to English pub fans. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 cheap (136) Cheap Lager in Western, Pennsylvania | July 7, 2008| Updated July 22, 2008 This is a very nice place that left a good impression on me. I was treated well from the moment I walked in. The only reason I went here was because it was the only place I could try a glass of East End 80 Schiling, but I was glad I went. I got there about 11:30 for lunch and the place was pretty much empty. Drew, one of the owner’s, talked with me for a while about english beer in a friendly manner and was very tolerable regarding my rookiness about English beers. If you have a desire for English style beers, this is the palce to go. Many UK beers on tap you cannot find in other locations around Pittsburgh. Very nice atmosphere. I didn’t have any food this time but I hear it is very good irish and english fare that cannot be had anyplace else in the area. Prices on beer were very affordable and they let you try samples of stuff you’re not sure about for free. |
