74 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 ACD (19) Dublin, Ireland | January 12, 2013 Very handily located right next to Trinity College in the city centre.
All the Porterhouse regulars on tap as well as a couple of their own seasonals. Three or four more taps with guest brews on - rarely ever anything exciting (maybe a SNPA, Metalman, or a couple of German lagers/weizens). They’ve recently installed 4 cask handpumps which are located right at the end of the bar facing the door (not exactly handy for the barmen). There’s a chalk board above the pumps to let you know what’s on as they often don’t put pump-clips on...christ knows why. They rarely seem to push the cask aspect of the bar so often beers aren’t in great condition after having been laying around for a week or so. Often a couple of English ales on as well as a Porterhouse beer or two. Make sure to ask them when each cask was tapped so as not to get any nasty surprises - barmen are happy to offer samples too.
Atmosphere is a bit dark and dingy (weird and very long layout) and has more of a sports/dive feel to it than its Temple Bar sister pub. Plenty of screens for matches.
Bottle selection is good, but not quite as extensive as the Temple Bar joint.
Food is tasty and reasonable (good pizzas).
Often gets unbelievably crowded later on and at weekends...and then the DJ comes on...and then I get the feck out of there - no ta, nobody wants a bloody DJ playing his iTunes at top volume in a pub.
Overall it’s not half bad. Would certainly recommend nabbing the window seats overlooking Nassau St in the afternoon for a couple of decent pints and some people watching.
| 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 17/20 Dogbrick (561) Columbus, Ohio | January 1, 2013 (Visited 11/2012): Porterhouse Central is on Nassau in the Temple Bar area near Trinity College.
The interior features a long bar along the right side and table seating throughout the rest of the space. Hanging flags and TVs in the bar area, plus some hanging boards explaining different beer ingredients.
Porterhouse features a pretty extensive beer list. There are around 8-10 Porterhouse brews on draught, including Red Ale, Temple Brau, An Brainblásta, XXXX Stout, Chiller and Plain Porter on our visit. All of the beers are above average. As for bottles there are around 100 from all over, as well as the beers that Porterhouse bottles, like Celebration Stout.
Service at the bar on our visit was good. The bartender was familiar with all the Porterhouse beers and was friendly and efficient during our stay. They were playing American football on TV too which was a pleasant surprise.
Food at Porterhouse is pretty good. We shared a gigantic plate of nachos and it was tasty.
Overall I would put Porterhouse at the top of the list of places to visit in Dublin. | 64 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20 Theydon_Bois (372) The ’Sham, England | January 1, 2013 Visited here just the once in April ’09. Prefer the original venue on Parliament st tbh.
This place, whilst carrying a pretty similar if perhaps slightly less extensive range, comes over as more of a ’Porterhouse Light’ when compared to the original.
More studenty/dive bar, stripped down and spartan in terms of decoration - I remember the wooden floor being a little sticky in places! Service was adequate. Wouldn’t go out of my way for this one but would do for a pint or two if your hotel was nearby as mine was. | 60 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 12/20 BelgCeltNorw (6) , | July 8, 2012 Porterhouse in Temple Bar has in general better selection and larger with live music, but this one has one aged barrel stout on the menu. Handy location if you are in Grafton street. Their Red ale and Oyster stout on tap are very nice.
Possibly the longest bar in Dublin. | 78 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 joe19612 (29) camberley, England | July 1, 2012 Went to the Porterhouse Central many times during our brief stay in dublin. Food was good and presentable and plenty of it and was good vallue for momey. Superb selection of beers on tap and in the chillers. No problem with if you have children and they are well behaved. | 74 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Mathieu87 (85) Ganshoren, Belgium | March 6, 2012 Bit less then the regular Porter House. There were a few beers they didn’t have. Service was bitt less as well. I prefer going to the Porterhouse, so go there and skip this place. | 74 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 17/20 suprchunk (76) Heinsberg, Germany | October 28, 2011 Nice, typical style bar. No problem with children in here if you are traveling with family. The usual porterhouse selections. Nothing else on draft, unless they are having some strange celebration of German beers. Didn’t have the food at this one. But the beers were good, just like the other location we hit up. Good beer, decent atmosphere. For a bar. | 58 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 4/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 12/20 Beershine (595) The Sunshine State, Florida | March 7, 2011 Don’t like this location as much as the Temple Bar one, the vibe is way worse, bordering on bad. It’s got a frat house immature idiot crowd and unpleasant atmosphere that makes me wanna get out fast. At the same time, the beer is great so if you’re in the neighborhood and are thirsty for something tasty then it’s there and I’m thankful for that. And it’s self-serve, so that’s nice and easy. | 74 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 3/10 OVERALL 15/20 thechandler (10) Charleston, West Virginia | September 20, 2010 Visited this place while visiting Dublin. Finally getting around to rating it. Great selection bottled. Several Porterhouse brews on tap (most of which were pretty good). Pretty decent service for Dublin. Served up a pretty good Irish stew too. The place was not cheap, however. Roughly 6 Euro a pint/bottle. Granted, nowhere in Dublin is very cheap. I’d certainly go back if I had the money though. | 70 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 Velkyal (70) Charlottesville, Virginia | September 8, 2010 One of the highlights of my trip to Ireland was drinking Wasslers XXXX in Porterhouse Central. Nice relaxed atmosphere and good beer, what more could you want? |
