the Rake. The godfather of Craft Beer in London and the place I dreamed of when I was stuck working in the Middle East!
Time however has moved on and I think the craft beer explosion has left the Rake looking a bit unloved. I was in last night and both the taps and bottles were a little uninspiring. Not a single IPA on the tap/pumps but three stouts. I get irritated by this. When you eat at a Gordon Ramsey’s he doesn’t only have 3 beef main courses!! Come on guys plan ahead.
Anyway had an decent smoked beer than a few cans of beavertown session IPA which were all good but I cannot help that others are now doing it better. I expect the Rake to still be showcasing the best not sharing stock with Tesco’s (ok maybe a slight exaggeration) but Fullers frontier on tap and flying dog in the fridge doesn’t cut the mustard.

Very small pub, very little in the way of seating, better when they put up the marquee outside. Good selection, but not up there with Draft House, CBC, Cask and Brewdog in my opinion. A good spot for tourists who could visit Borough Market (Utobeer), walk along the Thames and maybe do the Bermondsy breweries in the same day.

Our favourite craft beer bar in London this tiny place at the rear of Borough Market has three ales on handpump plaus a varying range of craft beers from both the continent and / or the USA depending on when you visit. They also often have tap take overs form various breweries, only recently was by Flying Dog. The place does get very busy later in the week but the staff are very good at serving so it rarely takes more then a few minutes to get served.
The outside area is actually larger than the inside area which is almost compleetly covered by the large umbrella when the weather is not good so even in winter, with the heaters on you can still sit outside.

This is the place that got me into craft beer and is my favourite in London. Absolutely tiny inside area, but such a huge selection. Rotating taps, and a massive choice of bottles. Staff are always friendly and helpful, letting me sample before I decide.

Located besides Borough Market it is a must visit when in the neighbourhood.
Very small but when sunny the small outside garden is a fantastic place to enjoy a few beers.
Small tap selection and a fine bottle selection. Had nice but not rare taps.
Had two beers and were off.

Small bar in Borough Market. We went on a Sunday night, so the market was closed. Ambiance was a little boring and the place could use a little refresh. Service was friendly and quick. The barman offered me some tasters. Selection was limited, both in terms of quantity and quality. There was still a couple of ticks on cask/tap, nothing stellar though. Bottle selection didn’t looked bad. Prices are good for Greater London. A lot “half” were around 2 pounds each. I was a tad disappointed by my visit, but it’s probably a different experience when the market is open.

This was one of our target pubs on our London vacation and did not disappoint. Nice selection, especially on cask beers. At the time of our visit it was a Welch brewery festival with 12 additional casks on the pattio, really nice. Staff was nice and helpful, prices decent. The only downside is that it’s small and easily gets crowded. Best place in London in my book
