Our dear cousin Rodo with whom everyone has a love-hate relationship. The first or one of the first craft bars on Opatovina street, legend says he brought the craft beer to this street. Patio outside, typical bar inside, sometimes too much smoke and people. No compromises - he has on tap what he loves, and it's usually the good stuff - domestic craft with good prices. Staff is slow and weird, and Rodo himself always welcomes you with his unique sense of humor. You'll have a good time and also question your life whenever you visit.

Okay place located near the Craft Room and Tolkien’s House. It is small, smoky, and can be quite crowded. The beer list is not as good as some of the other places but decent enough. Service is good, if slightly indifferent. Not bad but it has since been passed by Craft Room.

A beer bar? No. No it isn’t. It’s a loud, smokey, dingy bar that looks like many others in the popular neighborhood of Zagreb. The staff was exceptionally rude while I was there, telling us they had wi-fi then refusing to provide the passcode when we asked. We were told the staff didn’t like seeing people on their phones. No food served. If you wanted some shots and a beer for a bachelor party, this place would be OK, otherwise, just go to Tolkien House.

Small pub at Opatovina. Opatovina street is becoming craft beer scene of Croatia. Carpe Diem, Tolkiens and Ro&Do, all of them are serving croatian craft beers, mostly Nova runda and Zmajska. Really nice. About Ro & Do: Small pub, decorated like small pub. There are to specific things about this place: One are beers. Commercial beers are kicked out of this bar. Here you cant drink Ožujsko, Karlovačko or Pan. Brave move. And the second thing is the owner. Very interesting person. He tells everything he thinks, he is loud (but not in a bad way for most of the people). He is atmosphere director. As I said before, here you can dring craft breweries of croatia for reasonable price, some belgians, germans, czechs... also with some whiskeys.

Always a good atmosphere. Good selection of Croatian beers, fine prices. Owner is a great guy. The only problem is - it’s hard to find a free table in the evening.

This one is a bit special. Take care of unusual working hours. Is open in the morning and usually closes until 6 pm. Closed on Mondays. Interior may strike you as unappealing but the bar has its soul and I used to have great time there (and occasionally still do). The owner, working there, is quite a character. May seem a bit raw at first sight, but is a good guy and great at his job. Selection is quite good if you are looking for Croatian beers from smaller breweries. You’ll find Nova Runda on tap. Medvedgrad, Vukovarsko, Bošnjak, Zmajska in bottles, as well as few foreign bottles. Only bar in Zagreb that I know of where you won’t find any brews from Croatian macro breweries. Also if you are into quality spirits there is a good chance you’ll find something interesting. Prices are very good, especially considering it’s in town center.

The Opatovina pubs have certainly upped their ante these last few years, with both Ro & Do and Carpe Diem sporting their Belgians... but Ro & Do got a bit more varied selection with stuff like Traquair and so on. Standard imported craft fare for Croatia but a damn welcome sight, especially since it’s cheaper than Tolkien’s. Proper glassware (the owner making sure I was careful about his last Orval glass for example). Can be brutally full in the evenings/at night - the crowd can be ok, but can be annoying too, depends on the people themselves making the ambiance fluctuate from 1 to 5. Blankets available at the covered patio when it’s cold. The staff seems quite efficient and the owner is, from all accounts, quite cool too. In any case, it was the second and the cheaper place to stock Nova Runda APA, so that’s another incentive to visit it. :)
