70 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 womencantsail (389) Garbage Grove, California | December 24, 2012 Stopped in on a Friday night. Pretty packed with the college crowd (a $2 cover to get in, discounted shots and cocktails, some beers on special too). Service was pretty good, considering we pulled the douchebag move of ordering a flight on a busy weekend night. Beers were all pretty decent with the IPA being the standout. | 68 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20 t0rin0 (184) La Verne, California | December 22, 2012 Been here twice now, once in the middle of the day a couple years ago and once last night (12/21/12).
The place gets pretty busy at night. I kind of felt like an asshole ordering a flight while he bar was packed on a Friday nigth but what can you do? The flight is set at 6 samples and you dont get to mix and match. I asked for tastes of the two and we got them for free.
The beer isnt overly offensive but it isnt amazing either. I remember the Blueberry and the Pale being on tap at Yardhouse 5 or 6 years ago but I dont think they’re distributed anymore. Oh well. It’s mostly a college bar and the kids dont mind drinking it so I’m sure it all moves.
Service isnt bad for a busy college bar though they dont know much about the beer, not that I would expect them to. There is an upstairs area where all the action is and a quieter darker bar downstairs. If you’re in the 21-25 year old age bracket I’m sure it’s a fun place to hang out, though I did have a good time for the 30 minutes that I was there yesterday.
Not sure if they serve food or not. I never even asked. | 72 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 SamGamgee (182) down the whirlpool, California | February 13, 2012 An interesting brewpub that is actually more of a music venue/bar/night club that has a brewery upstairs that happens to make some very fine beers. Mellow and spacious upstairs during the day and crowded at night, specially when they do keep the pint nights on tuesdays. The downstairs is the dance floor/stage and they host some very good acts for SLO and have concerts several times a week. Probably the best selection of live music on the Central Coast overall. The standard beers are a red ale, blueberry ale, honey blond, porter, pale ale, and IPA. Then there are usually a couple seasonals that range from German wheat beers and lagers, to imperial ales and stouts. Quality is always high, though recipes tend to the conservative side because of the large college clientele. I’ve yet to meet a bartender that know’s anything about beer. This place doesn’t deserve such good beer, but it’s nice as a music venue/bar that also has good house beer, rather than a geeky brewpub. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 7/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 TheBeerBabe (9) Portland, Maine | May 24, 2010 Went to dinner here with some folks for work. A nice place for good quality beer (and even cider!). They were out of the blueberry, but I tried both the Honey Blonde and the Porter. I was really impressed with the quality of the porter, and would definitely come back again if in the area. | 74 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 IrishBoy (100) Bakersfield, California | October 18, 2009 Upstairs in downtown SLO in one of the old brick buildings. Nine of their beers were on draft and I had a sampler with lunch. The ahi salad wrap was excellent to go with the brews. The IPA was the best brew with lots of Simcoe hops in evidence! | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 dcraft (11) farnham, | January 13, 2009 I went on a Thursday on Farmers Market day. Always a good atmosphere, live band playing. Young and old in there. The beers I drank were very good. | 74 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 14/20 phishpond417 (51) Madison, Wisconsin | September 10, 2008 My girlfriend and I were held up in SLO for a while, waiting for a bus out of there when walking around town, we found Downtown Brewing Co. Once we went inside, we were greeted by friendly bartenders who assisted us with everythign we needed even giving us a couple free beers because we were from out of town.
The food was absolutely excellent and the prices were fantastic. After eating, we played a round of a pool, where you pay by the hour. When we headed to the bar to pay for our 1 1/2 of pool time, he told us not to worry about it.
There was even an area with glass walls, so you could watch the brewer at work not far from your table. It’s rare to find this kind of treatment. So I definately recommend checking it out. Finally, the hemp beer that they brewed was fantastic!! Not one bad beer was tasted. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 ChazMania (13) Pasadena, California | March 25, 2008 This was a VERY pleasant surprise for me on a trip to the Bay area last week. I looked for a place to stop half way for beer and sleep. I stopped in during happy hour and beers were 2 Dollars!!!! I had 3 IPA’s and wanted more but had to find a hotel. I went and found a hotel in walking distance, walked back and after 9pm the pints were 1 dollar!! (yes, 1 dollar!!). So I had a few more. (no stouts on while I was there, all I had was their IPA). All in all I had (i think) 6 pints a good sandwich and salad and it was less than 20$! The gal at the bar was one of the coolest bartenders I have encountered in a long time. I like this place. | 60 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20 Zinister (52) Houston, Texas | September 10, 2007 Paso Robles location. Solid beer selection with okay food as well. Nice location right on the downtown square...although at night it can be overrun with little punks. Waitress was solid and enjoyable. Service as good as well. Go in the day to avoid the crowds, unless you like crowds, in which case you should go at night. | 62 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20 Goldorak (114) Montreal, Quebec | October 2, 2006 This is the type of brewpub my girlfriend loves, I find okay, if a bit cookie-cutter in design. Upstairs in what seemed to have been some factory building, wide-open space, dark red brick, brewing equipment closed off with a garage door, pool tables, lots of widescreen TVs gives it a very sports bar/restaurant theme. We were there around 5pm and the place was pretty quiet, so a friendly waitress that had basic knowledge of what was on tap served us pretty quickly.
5 or 6 regular brews were on, with a seasonal or two and I think they had a guest brew from Firestone-Walker. Selection was pretty conservative. I went for the IPA if memory serves, and it was quite good. I also had a few samplers, nothing bad to say about any of them. Prices were dirt-cheap during happy hour. Food menu is standard brewpub fare that we enjoyed. Pretty solid brewpub experience from top to bottom, nothing blew me away but all my expectations were met and I had a good time.
