82 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20
Stopped in here after arriving in Terre Haute for a Tuesday night basketball game at ISU. The place is a double storefront sized space on the corner of Wabash and 14th. Green paint and wood panels inside, like thousands of other bars. Just a few other people there at the time, playing pool or sitting at their regular tables. The bartender was probably a student and was about as nice as could be, not to mention she really knew her stuff. I couldnít believe some of the taps; one-offs from Lagunitas, Oskar Blues, and Triton, a handful of national and Euro macros, and plenty of other national and regional craft taps. Really impressive. I didnít eat but the food seemed like cheap but tasty bar fare. The prices are super low; wound up being $10 for a few beers. Definitely worth a stop if youíre in town or just passing through. Iíll be back.

This was my home away from home when I lived in Indiana. I put a lot of work in there. Many, many, many pints. I even dug the corner table out of the garbage bin out back one day when I realized it had been replaced with a new one. I had shared so many good times at that table with lifelong friends that I couldnít see allowing it to be discarded. Iíve seen staff turn over there several times over. Iíve even had the misfortune of losing a longtime Sonkaís manager/bartender and friend to an untimely demise. Sonkaís is the place to which I refer in so many stories--most good, a few bad, but all memories that lie in my heart where theyíll stay forever. The beer selection used to be (meaning í99, í00, í01) more extensive. Offering more bottles than taps. Nowadays, Sandy, the owner, appears more interested in having more tap varieties, which, obviously, cuts down on the number of overall varieties that are available. A lot of the best Midwest offerings as well as some other American regional and international favorites are always ready to be poured for you. The atmosphere smacks of a neighborhood pub thatís seen a lot of history. For nostalgia lovers, youíll have a soft spot in your heart for this place even if itís the first time youíve ever been there. Iíve often said that Sonkaís is more of an Irish pub than most Irish pubs--and Iíve been to several pubs in Ireland. I love how
Sonkaís appeals to the college student, the blue collar worker, the educated professorial types, and the community leaders alike. Rarely ever any trouble. Even on the most busy days like the Indiana State University pub crawl and St. Pattyís day. Patrons are generally very welcoming and easy-going. Just a magnificent atmosphere and a place to make great memories.

One of the best bars in Terre Haute. Good selection of draft, home made chips, cheese boards and bartenders that know their beer.
Recommend the chef salad - uses salad greens, ample turkey, ham and corned beef and plenty of extras.
Locally owned and the owner is active in the community.
Recent Upgrades (2013) have made the overall score higher. Outside renovations, another patio, fresh paint and an owner that takes pride in the business.
A real destination for those visiting Terre Haute and love Beer. There are only a handful of bars/pubs in town that have real character - and Sonkaís is among them.
