Southern Rail is the unmistakeable renovated train station and actual train car(s) that is in ’downtown’ Carrboro in between Milltown and Weaver St Market, both ratebeer places as well. Southern Rail has a pretty extensive craft beer draft list, some macros still, and somewhat annoyingly three different bars with taps so it may be worth it while you are waiting for your food to explore the different rooms around and see what’s on tap. There is a new bar and coffee shop inside the complex called "The Tiger Room" which may have different drafts, but they are all combined into one place. It used to be that the menu here was incredible with some really great steak frites among other things. Now they only have 4 entrees for the entire restaurant, and 2-3 specials. So you must ask what the specials are as those are going to be the only interesting things probably for dinner. For lunch, it’s going to be sandwiches. Service was slow when I was there most recently and the food was decent, some flaws in a few of their special dishes but certainly everything was yummy. Prices are higher. For two entrees and only one beer plus tip it was $40+ for two people. For beer, expect things to be poured too cold and always into a pint glass instead of proper glassware. However, the craft beer selection is decent enough to warrant an RB places addition: Foothills, Big Boss, even a beer from a new Carrboro brewery called Starpoint Surfin Buddha which I’ve never seen anywhere else. So- it’s an option for food and beer in the area competing with Panzanilla, Milltown, Tylers. For such a small town, I think it’s safe to say Carrboro is big into craft beer. The most annoying thing is that Southern Rail does not update their draft list on facebook, doesn’t seem to have twitter, and the website doesn’t even have a normal beer menu. this place and its counterpart in DC called Saint-Ex sort of does.
