Cool bar and I had no problems grabbing a seat at the bar on a Tuesday evening. Taps had good local options. The bottle list was much more Belgian and Euro forward. Interesting cheese selection. Friendly lady behind the bar who was pretty chilled but in saying that it wasn’t really busy at all. Another good addition to a crawl around Williamsburg.

Small, trendy and very busy. Long bar with cozy tables crammed in. Service pretty much ignored me, maybe too busy, but typical of NYC. A few drafts and large bottle list. Prices were high and not worth it in my mind. I may give this place another chance, but this visit it didn’t tick any of my boxes.

Visited on a very calm moment . An afternoon on a sunday . Selection was OK , but no real shocking beers at this specific time . What I did have, was a memorable , kick-ass service . They got me several tastes from tap , complete with a very knowledgable explenation . The prices were very nice, the friendlyness here was trough the roof . The bar itself looks closed , with the red metal in front of the windows , but once you get inside, its like a very cosy , almost Belgian kind of bar . Liked it , even though the hype created By the cantillon makes people go here with the wrong expectations . Did not see any lambic at all ( maybe I missed it though )

Cool place. Servers were knowledgeable ad very friendly. good election of beers, but I wasn’t interested in paying import prices for Belgian stuff, which narrows the choices. I think 10 taps would really make it stand out more, but still, a good place.

Good obscure selection of mostly foreign. Only about 5-6 taps, the rest bottles. The bottles are very pricey. Service was average to below average and it wasn’t busy. Worth a trip just to see if they have anything interesting available.

Swank little joint in Brooklyn. Hip decor, cool vibe, friendly staff. Not
quite the bottle selection it used to be but still impressive. Good tap selection.

Another hipster place for slightly inebriated beer crowd. Visited the place early evening and had trouble finding it since it looked more like a pawnshop or neighborhood repairshop than a bar. But once inside, I really appreciated the place. Six taps and around 80 bottles were available at them time. The decor inside fits the profile of the clients very well. The food, what food? They have cheese and meat products for people starving. The prices are a bit steep but the selection was very good. The bar tender was very knowledgeable and warm. I will certainly visit the place again.

We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon after gorging ourselves across the street at Fette Sau. We actually walked right past it on our way to Fette Sau and wouldn’t have recognized the entrance if I hadn’t looked it up in advance of coming. The bar itself has a vaguely European cafe feel to it, long skinny bar area, it is the kind of place that has a bicycle hanging from the wall and custom wood tap handles. It’s apparently also the type of place that kind of smirks when you ask if they have coffee or caffeinated beverages. The tap list was decent with a couple of solid choices and a decent range of styles. Bottle list had more rarities but most seemed less appealing when I discovered that they were not in fact 750ml bottles as I had assumed from the prices, but were in fact 375! Still, some definitely worth a splurge depending what you were into. The best feature of the place in my opinion was the large sunny back patio. It was the perfect day for it for us, with plenty of sun but not too hot. We visited with puzzl, Pearl and dickinsonbeer and it was a great spot to relax and hang out with friends. It’s a nice bar, and the sort of sleepy afternoon feel was nice compared to busier spots we went to on this trip but as others have noted the prices can be steep even for NYC. All that said, I had a great time and I would come back and it’s well worth a visit, but I suspect that its overall ranking in NYC is partly based on high historical ratings.

Spuyten Duyvil is located in Brooklyn on Metropolitan Ave across from Fette Sau. The red exterior doesn’t have an obvious signage.
The interior is dimly lit with the bar running along the right side, and small tables opposite. Red ceiling with large hanging lights. Odd decor on the walls including an old bicycle. There are chalkboards behind the wall listing the beers that are available.
The bar has 6 or 8 beers on draught with an emphasis on Belgians, as well as some regional breweries like Two Roads. The bottled selection consists of over 50 selections, again heavier on Belgian styles. Many rarities and vintage ales as well.
Service on a relatively busy weeknight was decent. My colleague and I had a small table and were pretty much left to ourselves to order at the bar. The bartender seemed knowledgeable about the available beers.
We did not have any food on our visit.
Overall this bar wasn’t a revelation or anything but had a nice laid back if hipster atmosphere. I wouldn’t put it at the top of the list but would visit again if in Brooklyn.
