94 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 worldbeertaste (73) , England | January 27, 2013 This new pub is exactly what Lancaster needed. Stories of other pubs in Lancaster once at their greatness doesn’t compare to this new-age pub. Clearly, they are aware that there are beer drinkers who want to sample or drink regularly a wide selection of beer that is new. Off to the side of one of the main streets, its quiet at times and packed to the brim in others. The manager clearly tries to get the best brewers on tap and cask here as you will find Dark Star and Thornbridge here but not anywhere else I Lancaster. The bottle selection cycles and it is superb. The best part is that mostly the prices are very reasonable. I would guess a 15%-20% mark-up with deals if you take out. Other places that can be compared with in Lancaster and Manchester clearly have a larger mark-up than 20% making this pub super reasonable. The staff is young and keen and friendly to tell you or learn about their products. The one draw back is that it doesn’t serve food and I’m not sure that it should. Its too small of a space for food and I would worry that it couldn’t cycle the tables well enough. If it ever moved to a larger location, then it would be perfect.
The main part of the bar is taken up with real ale pumps and naturally there is a decent selection - but other drinks are also available, it is not exclusive! There’s a good knowledge had by the bar staff if you want help choosing, The furnishings are a little more modern than your average pub of this type, but it’s still soft furnishings making it cosy enough. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 wimpyjoe (568) Manchester, England | January 17, 2013 Tucked away through an alleyway off the main pedestrian shopping street this is a real find for real ale fans. Bit pricey but you don’t feel ripped off when the qualiy of beer on offer is this high.
A must visit on any night out in Lancaster! |
