Pop-in visit right after the CBX opened one morning, and was knocked on my ass at the greatness contained in such a tidy spot. A tiny, woody nook that one can imagine had some nautical purpose in the 17th or 18th century, now crammed with so much craft beer that I was very cautious with my movements (that being more or less the only knock on the joint, as if too much beer is really a knock). Killer selection, including excellent taps. Fabulous service. Prices maybe a scootch high, but there’s so much stuff you can’t get elsewhere that it’s hardly a demerit. Prioritize this place if ever in town.

Stopped in here with my wife during a day walking around downtown Charleston. The location is perfect, right where Exchange meets East Bay, around the corner from the east end of Broad Street. Very cool storefront in an old historic building. I was looking for any good stuff from Westbrook and COAST and ended up successful on both fronts. The selection isn’t huge but extremely well curated. There were 2 guys working and both were extremely friendly, helpful, and really knew their stuff. 9 taps for growler fills of 3 sizes; nothing jumped out at me this time but I’ve seen some of the stuff that rolls through. This place would be dangerous for me if I lived in the area.

This place is tiny and great. The shelves were completely stocked with beer, and the selection was very solid. Employees were very helpful. Decent draft list for growler fills too. I don’t have a bad thing to say, if I was local I’d shop here VERY often.

Visited on Oct. 11, 2012. This was my 3rd visit to Charleston, and my 3rd visit to CBX. Excellent little place tucked away on a side street next to Rainbow Row. Certainly the best beer place I have visited in South Carolina. Rather small, but stocked to the ceiling with selections. They use the space well! For such a small place, they have an outstanding selection of American and import craft brews. Many, many different breweries in stock with a very good selection of different brews by each brewery. Mostly warm beers, but they do have a smaller cooler with cold beers. The store seems to focus more 22 oz. bombers, but they more than enough 12oz and 6-packs in stock as well. Plus they have 9 taps that only have the top of the top on tap! Seriously, they get some of the rarest beers out there on tap somehow. By state law they don’t allow sampling, but after asking one of the guys working, the ones on tap I asked about were described to me in so much detail that I almost felt like I had sampled them! Plus they allow mix and match on all beers they stock and they pro-rate the cost! So no jacking up of the price because you are buying only one bottle. Prices are very reasonable as well. I’m not sure how they do that, because rent here couldn’t be cheap given the historic area this is located in. There were two guys working when I was in, both were extremely friendly and talked beer with me at length. In short, if you are anywhere near Charleston, this place alone is worth the trip! Absolutely top notch!

I finally got the chance to visit the historic downdown Charleston area and the highly rated Charleston Beer Exchange. Having been to their Greenville location before, I can safely say that this one is nearly identical. I love what these guys do; just beer, an excellent selection, growler stations, clean and well-organized, while having a friendly and very knowlegeable staff. A must stop for the craft beer fan if in the area.

The bad... prices are a little high. There are 4 or 5 metered spots in front but parking could get sketchy. Um... that’s it. The good... everything else. This is a world class bottle shop. 9 taps and they fill bombers of some of the draft stuff so even if you missed it you may not have missed it. I find the selection to be tilted more towards the foreign selections, particularly Belgian and Scandinavian but with everything else represented as well. Local and American selections also. The selection is truly expansive. Easily three dozen Mikkeller beers just to name one brewery. The place is small and if there are more than a couple of people there you will be waiting to get places or bumping into people. This is good in my book as this means they are maximizing the space for beer. There were a few employees in there and they were all helpful as all heck, chatting with me, letting me know details about Brewvival, giving me recommendations about beer bars, and more. I spent a hundred here. I could have easily spent a thousand if I had the means. This is the kind of place worth driving hours out of your way for.
