This is a small production brewery with a small bar stuck in the center, next to the fermentation vessels, with just a table or two near the barrels. They had some sort of event going on, so there were local vendors around as well. Flights of four beers were available, as well as bottles to drink in or carry out. Very tasty stuff, definitely worth a visit.

A wonderful space easily accessible by foot when doing a crawl around the area. I totally dig the setup as youíre pretty much drinking right in the brewery, gawking at stainless steel and oak barrels. I grabbed a tasting paddle and the beers were, I guess one could say, "a mixed bag". Hits and misses but exciting to see what these guys are doing. No doubt there will be plenty of tasty beer coming outta the brewery in the future. Love the buzzy atmosphere. Rock on.

Great little place tucked into a small industrial warehouse in SE Portland. Used to be a lot ísmallerí because the tasting room and the brewery were on in the same, but as theyíve moved some of the equipment, thereís more room to breath. However, it doesnít lose the same feel as Upright because tanks still line the walls. Thereís typically a selection of year rounds and one-offs/seasonals on tap, and itís wonderful that the beers typically stay under 7%. Service is good, and itís a place I definitely recommend checking out.

Bare bones tasting room right in the fermentation/conditioning area of the brewery. Tables are upended barrels and seating consists of a few (literally, three) stools. We took all three, as we were the only ones there at opening time. But people soon began arriving and they had nowhere to sit. Within 30 minutes, there were 25-30 customers. Only one staffer, and she sure got busy in a hurry. Nine beers on tap and four bottles for sale. Sampler set: four 5-oz. glasses for $9. Bottles for $7-9. No food available. A bit warm in the building with the afternoon sun streaming through the large windows and fermenters working away. Focus is on Belgian farmhouse and sours, which they do more or less well. Theyíve been open less than two years, and Iíll stop by sometime in a year or so to see if they have gotten better.

A tricky question with ratings if relative to what. As in the selection category. the commons has a range theyíre working with--which includes some sourness and not much hops--but if youíre coming here aware of what they do you see they experiment quite a bit (of 8 beers on tap 5 different yeasts are involved.) The bartender, who also "works production" knew tons about the brews. This is a tasting room and the ambiance is tanks and barrels with hoses and such. Lovely beers.

Stopped by on a slow Sunday. Great selection of their beers. Inviting ambiance standing around the barrels. Generous pour size for the price of tasters. Wasnít blown away by the beers but they were solid.

Iíve visited the Commons twice now, and while I very much enjoy the space, I find I donít enjoy the beer so much. Itís a small one-floor warehouse space with a taproom, brewing equipment and barrels, and patrons are encouraged to sit around the equipment while sampling the beer. Very friendly and knowledgeable people are contributing a lot of good to the Portland scene. As for the beer, it just doesnít align with my tastes. The Belgian sacch strain that they use is very silty and dirty-tasting (in my opinion), and even in their beers which have settled enough to develop some clarity, I find the yeast rather pasty and dull and lifeless. They do a lot of sour/acidic beer with bacteria, and many are above average to good, but I havenít had one yet that seemed 4+ level for me. The Belgian Porter was a nice one to try, and I remain optimistic that they will someday move from Funkwerks territory (dull, pasty yeast and experiments with spices and flavorings that seem aimless) to Boulevard territory (which has a spectacularly phenolic and vibrant yeast strain in their Belgian ales, the Imperial Stout included, and their experiments seem very deliberate and focused).
