Dropped by for two visits, April 5th and April 7th, 2012. The Knickerbocker features an excellent selection of craft beer on tap, twenty to choose from by my count. In addition, I noticed a large fridge in the back seating area, well stocked with bottles. I was here for the draft suds, however, and I stuck with two local ales on each visit. The cask featured Otto’s Arthur’s HopJack Pale Ale "from northeastern PA", a lovely drink just a bit cooler than room temperature. I followed Otto with an Elk Creek Heron Pale Ale, "made right down the road in Millheim", darker in colour, a colder temperature, and perhaps a tad stronger. The food here rates the "Exceptional" label - well above average Firehouse chicken wings, and perhaps the best nachos I’ve ever tasted. Having said all that, it’s not an easy place to get to, there isn’t much in the area, and the state’s very tough liquor laws make spending much time with the draft a sort of chancy business. I usually visit The Station Inn up in nearby Cresson a couple of times each year, though, and I shall look forward to dropping by here again one day. Service, via the lovely Rachel, was excellent! Highly recommended if you are in Altoona.

This place was like stepping into a time machine. The bar is almost a century old and yet there was a timeless feeling about it. They had over 20 different beers on tap along with a detailed draft beer list to explain them all. They had a nice mix of local and national craft along with seasonals and a cask. I do wish they wouldn’t serve beer in cold glasses but they enough not to serve the cask ale in one. The food was fantastic both my burger and the potato wedges. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. I’d definitely go back if I’m in the area.

A very nice place. This is THE place to go and get a craft beer in Altoona. The place is nice inside. The place is divided up into three sections: front, back, and the patio. The revolving taps are usually quite nice, and they change often. They also have a decent collection of bottles to choose from also. The food is just awesome. That’s all I can say... just awesome. The prices can be a little high, but being crafts and imports I suppose they’re spot on. An added bonus is that the prices keep most of the dirtbags out. And it is nice enough that you can take your kids in for a meal. You will often see families (including babies) in there enjoying a nice meal.

Great feel to this place. It’s separated into multiple rooms, two bars with several micros on tap, including Founders, Victory, Troegs, Bells. Solid bottle selection, including a good number of bombers/750s, the likes of Bells, DFH, Oskar Blues, the usual local micros, plus Brooklyn, and many Belgians in bottles. A great local place if you’re in the area, and by far the best beer bar in Altoona.

Visited in 25F temperature after heavy snow, so no view to speak of. 1904 sign outside may indicate the last time the hotel was painted, but it has an old charm nestled in the residential surroundings. Small, 12 tap wood bar that seats maybe 8. Taps are local availables, but the cooler in the corner has bottles from troegs, brooklyn, southern tier, voodoo, and a small collection of Belgians. There’s a case of red bull next to that. At the front, a jager shot machine. The guy to my right was hitting on a girl by talking about hookers stashing guns underneath car seats... the guy to my left was talking about getting his dick sucked in a car trunk...the bartender was serving her mother... definitely a local place. Cool looking stop with the old facade, I’ll have to give it another try during warmer months.

Very good food, very good selection of beers, and the patio view is awesome. Hit Marzoni’s, then come here for a nightcap.

IMO, the best beer bar in Altoona. Bjorn, the owner and Bill, a bartender were the only ones at the bar when I entered at 4:30pm. We had a lengthy beer discussion, and Bjorn lamented the difficulties of keeping good beers in stock with limited options from his distributor. He is making valiant efforts, however, to keep a well rounded, fresh, and varied stock of beers, and is active in trying to help others enjoy craft beers. On tap today included Rogue Dead Guy, DFH 60 Minute IPA, Speckled Hen, Stoudts Scarlet Lady, and a few local crowd pleasers such as Yuengling, Miller Lite, and Coors Light. In the coolers, one could find Chimay Bleu, Lindemans, DFH 90 Minute IPA, Sam Smiths Imp Stout, Stoudts Fat Dog, and many, many others. I had tried everything before except the Brooklyn Pennant, in which I was disappointed, but no reflection on the establishment. Is this the best beer bar you’ll ever visit? No, but if you’re in the Altoona area and need something other than BMC and Yuengling, then stop in here. Next time I look forward to trying their wings. This is a place I’ll be watching because I think it’s just going to keep getting better and more interesting.
UPDATE 06.10.05: Ate outside last night. Food is really good and some interesting sandwiches. The patio was reminiscent of a European backyard cafe, and service was great.
