This is by far the oldest bar in Denmark, and dates back to the 13th century, build by the cistercian munks (the Bernadines). First a dining room for the munks, since a wine cellar, and from around 1884 a serving bar for the public. This of course means great atmosphere, which can be both cosy and comfortable, and chillingly creepy, depending on when you visit and how crowded it is. Only five taps at the moment, Ceres Top, Ceres Classic, Odense Pilsner, Ale no.16 and one in rotation. prices are average for Aarhus, which means to the pricier side. Good selection of bottled brew, both danish and foreign. Thorups is the place to go in Aarhus for that famous Glögg (Mulled Wine), made from a 300 year old recipe, only served in December. Thursday night is Stand-Up Comedy night Edit 2012: The new owner has no concept or respect for this old place. He put in plastic foldable chairs and lottery/jackpot machines so ugly and the light up the entire room. Talk about lack of taste and respect. Total blasphemia, and it just goes to show how you can fuck up one of the most atmospheric bars in the history of such, and make it tasteless and indifferent

Great looking and cozy bar, to bad this is the only reason to visit. Only macro beers on tap and a few bottles, but none of really interest. Okies service, and fairly priced.

Visited 2010. This is how all beer bars/cellars are supposed to be in according to ambience. Perfect place, too bad the selection isn’t as good.

I absolutely love the room itself (an old cellar with vaults), however with the current selection there is really no reason to go there. They have Royal Unibrew on tap along with Ale no. 16 and the fridge is filled with macro cider (the sweet sticky kind) and Skovlyst, which I could buy at the nearest supermarket instead. The previous time I was there (March 2011), they had a tasting held by Mikkeller and there was no end to the exicting plans the owner had for the place. Unfortunately the selection has gone downhill from then instead.

Recommended if RisRas or Cockney Pub (both nearby) are too crowded or expensive for you. Moody service isn’t the same as bad service, and I’ve never experienced dishonest advice or sloppy serving.

Update: Now the selction is pour. Great place in center of Aarhus. Opening houers extended resently. Same owner as Cockney Pub and the intension is to have more mainstream/international beers on tab, but sometimes they have belgian fruitlambic. So much for mainstream! Prices a very low. Host to DØE Aarhus C.

Nice cozy cellar with low music. Wide selection of tapped beers and cider. A bottled selection parallel to the Cockney pub. However service is very variable. Sometimes very guiding and else rather superficial.

Kindly we asked the owner if he would recommend some beers, for 4 thirsty guys. He just pointed towards the selection of taps. No words followed.. He looked like he didn´t liked to serve customers, wanting to spend money at his bar. Okay we bought warsteiner and Budvar Dark and 2 Irish Coffe. All big beers (50cl tap) only dkr. 35,- including different beers as Delerium Tremens, Leffe dubbel and Warsteiner. There´s karaoke entertainment and a nice selection of beers but a lack of service. Medium overall rating but nice beer prizes gives a value 7 rating.
