Not much parking, hard to find in the basement, not much space to drink. But it is a MUST stop place, well worth the trouble of trying to find it. I didnít see any signs anywhere, good thing I went with Doug. Went for the Fantasia release.

This place was so hard to find. It was fun to watch as people entered the brewery and realized that they had arrived. The looks of surprise and elation provided no small amount of entertainment. Itís a small place and a bit of a labyrinth to get to, but totally worth it. They had a record player spinning old country standards, and we sipped our amazing sours amidst fermenters and barrels. A great experience, and we left with a ton of good beer.

Visited around 1pm on Saturday 25/05/13, just after opening. Upright is located in the basement of a 3 or 4 storey building. Downstairs is the brewery itself, lots of barrel ageing projects underway and you can pretty much sit amongst it all. The place was pretty quiet on my visit, 2 groups of 2, plus my party of 6. The guy serving was friendly and informative. Thereís 10 taps and about 10 bottles (to drink in or go). 5oz pours weighed in at a very reasonable $1.50! Really nice set up - a definate visit on a beer tour of PDX !

Great place. Quirky joint, you just end up finding a spot on the brew floor and sup away. The pints were cheap! And some of Uprights rarer stuff at that price was ridiculous. Weird hours and location do make it somewhere I doubt Iíll spend an awful lot of time, but itís worth the trip on occasion.

Visited on a Sunday (entrance is at the front of the building, then go down to the basement and follow the smell of brewing and beer). There was some great live acoustic music playing, tables set up to sit at, and a nice sample of all the regular upright beers along with 5 different taps. They also had one one-off for sale still in bottles. All the samples were pretty cheap (same with growler fills or full pours) and it was pretty neat to sit in an actual brewery (some tables were set up beside the vats etc) and drink their beer in a relaxed atmoshphere.

Of all the places n Portland we went, this was the most Portlandy. Located in a basement, cash only, seating amongst the fermenters, and music provided by a vinyl record player (of course). Going to the bathroom was like stumbling in to a David Lynch Movie if you make wrong turn. Oh, and of course plenty of great beer to be had...

I absolutely loved my time at Upright. The kind of environment I always feel extremely comfortable drinking in, surrounded by brewing equipment, oak casks, the sight of open fermentation vessels quietly bubbling away. The tap room is basic, a few tables, chairs etc. Whatever, itís all about sampling wonderfully delicious beer. Impressed with the diversity too, not just a fantastic selection of farmhouse ales but there was also a pilsner, bitter and smoked available...all very good. The record player drifting out some killer tunes on vinyl completes it. Perhaps the basement feel would not make you linger for long if you came here regularly but if you havenít sampled Upright wares before itís a must.

Parking is not easy here but if you use public transit or just walk itís not a problem. When I was here there was nothing on the ground floor, the place was empty. Take the elevator down to the basement and walk around the barrels lying all over the place and go to the back corner where there is a folding table set up with a guy hanging out in the vicinity that will serve drinks. They have some bottles available but the Sole Composition bottles are the ones that people go for. They do very good saisons for the most part. They do a lot of experimentation so they do miss on occasion but they do a good job all around. Theyíre also one of the few breweries that I know that does multiple goses through out the year. Prices are reasonable on all their bottles and the draft stuff as well. Iíd love to return some time soon.
