Location very strange and hard to find. Basement brewery and lots of barrels, brewing equipment and strange stuff everywhere with some chairs to sit. LP record player was maybe too hipster for me. This place is not open often but if you are visiting Portland and it is open this is must stop. Amazingly cool place. Their saisons were also great unlike saisons from USA usually.

An underground maze that leads you to a boiler room brewery. Kinda fight clubish and comes with a cute Colie that follows the brewer around. Tables scattered throughout the brewery. All this makes it seem like a great kept secret. Everything about this place is awesome and fun. A must with pretty good beer.

One of my favorite stops in Portland during our trip. Not the easiest to find and parking is horrible, but worth the search. Bare bones taproom in the basement of the building, but I dig the tables and drinking amongst their barrels and brewing equipment. Beers are super cheap and all very delicious. People were friendly and the selection was great. You cannot come to Portland and not make it to Upright.

Cool location down in the basement. Smaller than some of the other tasting rooms with about 8 taps. Friendly staff though and nice selection if mustards for sale.

You walk up to a cool old brick building that appears to be completely occupied by businesses that have nothing to do with brewing. It actually almost is completely occupied with other businesses. Thereís a little sandwich board sign out front that says "BEER" and thatís your cue that youíre in the right spot.
Inside, you wind your way through a coffee shop and down hallways looking for the door to the stairs. Then there are more hallways and staircases that feel like an MC Escher illustration at some points, then you finally zigzag your way to the back of the basement, where the brewhouse awaits. Itís not really that big, maybe a thousand square feet, and theyíve filled most of it with barrels and equipment. But they pull out some tables after the brewday is done, and the assistant brewers end up pouring beer many evenings. Thatís super cool--you really learn about the beers with them being the bartenders.
They have about a dozen taps, and often have bottles in the cooler that they will crack. Prices are good, and the tap stuff is often sparkling fresh (though many of their beers benefit from aging, so freshness doesnít automatically equate to quality here).
Their beers range from good to world-class, and they make many different styles (with a heavy emphasis on saisons). Prices and staff are everything you could reasonably ask for. If you dig beer and you hit Portland, you really have to check this place out.

Not much parking, hard to find in the basement, not much space to drink. But it is a MUST stop place, well worth the trouble of trying to find it. I didnít see any signs anywhere, good thing I went with Doug. Went for the Fantasia release.

This place was so hard to find. It was fun to watch as people entered the brewery and realized that they had arrived. The looks of surprise and elation provided no small amount of entertainment. Itís a small place and a bit of a labyrinth to get to, but totally worth it. They had a record player spinning old country standards, and we sipped our amazing sours amidst fermenters and barrels. A great experience, and we left with a ton of good beer.

Visited around 1pm on Saturday 25/05/13, just after opening.
Upright is located in the basement of a 3 or 4 storey building.
Downstairs is the brewery itself, lots of barrel ageing projects underway and you can pretty much sit amongst it all.
The place was pretty quiet on my visit, 2 groups of 2, plus my party of 6. The guy serving was friendly and informative. Thereís 10 taps and about 10 bottles (to drink in or go).
5oz pours weighed in at a very reasonable $1.50!
Really nice set up - a definate visit on a beer tour of PDX !

Great place. Quirky joint, you just end up finding a spot on the brew floor and sup away. The pints were cheap! And some of Uprights rarer stuff at that price was ridiculous. Weird hours and location do make it somewhere I doubt Iíll spend an awful lot of time, but itís worth the trip on occasion.
