74 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20
Visited on Sunday 01/03/15 around 5am.
Canal side pub just a short walk from the centre.
Large open plan single room on a split level, tall ceiling - almost like a chalet, lots of windows affording views of the canal. Bench seating on offer outside by the canal.
The place was doing a fair trade for a late Sunday afternoon but there was still plenty of room to spread out.
At the business end 10 cask offerings were available on my visit, a couple of bigger players such as FullerTimothy Taylor which I presume are regulars with the rest of the picks coming largely local micros. One criticism of the range on offer is that it was all a bit samey... nearly all 3.7-4.2% golds!
The cask range was also supplemented with some decent bottle choices.
Service was prompt and the guy behind the bar happy to give advice and tasters.
In all definitely one of the best all round picks in Lancaster for me based on surroundings, choice and service - probably #1 tbh.

Canalside pub. Large, open-plan and modern; looks a bit Wetherspoon-y. 12 real ales and a decent, well-though-out bottle selection (Einstök, Hardknott, Anchor) makes the difference. Lancaster has more than its share of excellent pubs, but this is certainly worth checking out.

Set by the canal, the picnic tables that line the waterside of this bar means it has a great setting for drinks on the warmer days of the year. Inside the decor is modern but comfortable with soft furnishings aplenty. The seating is on two levels with the bar between both but only accessible on the lower side. There’s plenty to choose from with an excellent range of real ales available. Food is served and there is a small pool table at the back of the open plan setting.

This is a great pub. It often ranks in the Good Beer guide and the staff is friendly. Its known to have the best selection of cask ales and it constantly changes.
From what I saw there was 14 different cask pumps available and some draft.
