yeasty concoction, no head. Alcohol in the nose and some of the taste. Average mouthfeel. Passable drinkable taste, but nothing complex or special, and alcohol is right there.Bottle from the Netherlands, Bierkoning.

one of the great dutch beers... very complex with lots of malts, yeast, honey, black candy (what’s that stuff called in english?) chocolat and somehints of ftruit... one small point of critic, it pours without a head....

Bottle at ’In de Wildemaan’, Amsterdam, 29-10-09 Pours deep mahogany with a creamy of-white head. Sweet malts and mollasses come to the fore and strangely I get a hint of cheese rind on nose. The taste is rich, with demarara sugar, thick malts, but its slightly bitter. There is a tinge of sourness as well, a big but very good beer. A7 A4 F7 P4 Ov14 3.6

bottle from my girlfriend. the best Dutch beer available in the local supermarket! Always enjoy this one. Stong aroma with a strong, sweet, roasted taste. Beer is better aged. Wil drink this one over and over again!

Poured aggressively and there was no head at all. Just a thin cream film over its dark brown/reddish body. No lacing either. Smell of roasted malt, raisins, and smoke. Taste was the same with hardly any bitterness from the hops. Nice beer but I wish there was a stronger bitterness to it.

The best of all the labels of Hertog Jan. Dark reddish-brown color. Head is nearly beige-brown with no duration at all. Aroma is malty with a lot of caramel and some fruits. Taste is al ittle bit chocolate and fruits but mostly caramel. Long lasting aftertaste with no bitternes at all. Nice body, pleasant palate.

(Draught at ’t Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 31 July 2009) Dark ruby colour with creamy, beige head. Malty nose with notes of red fruit and roasted malt. Slightly vinous. Malty taste with red fruit, raisins, brown sugar. Roasted malt and caramel in the finish. Full bodied and fairly sweet with alcohol rather well hidden, coming through with some warmth towards the end. Tasty and warming beer in good balance. Very nice.
