12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with about an inch and half tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and a weird fruity aroma that I have no idea what it is. Taste is similar to the aroma (including the weird fruity taste), but also has a bit of a nutty taste too. However, the overall flavor of this beer is just weird. I can’t explain it, but there’s something a bit off about it. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it’s a bit coating and has low carbonation. Drinkability is OK, it’s not hard to drink at all but the weird flavor and aroma sure doesn’t help. Good thing I only bought a single bottle of this. I’ll have to revisit this in the future, because I don’t think I had a good bottle.

Bottle. Pours near-black with a small light brown head which dissipates quickly. Aroma of roast malts and rich, sweet chocolate. The chocolate is very potent. Flavor is a little odd at first - sort of like a very weak chocolate milk with a hint of coffee thrown in. It evens out over the course of the glass, but it’s funky in an uninteresting way (except for the part where you try to describe the flavor...). Has potential, but needs better balance.

Great, rich, straightforward chocolatey aroma. The flavor, though, is rather thin, like diluted Hershey’s syrup. Unfortunate.

This poured a darker brown color with almost no head at all. Aroma was chocolate and roasted malts. Flavor was light chocolate, roasted malts, and not much else at all. This might have been the thinnest porter ive ever had and very low carbonated as well.

7/30/2008: Mad Brewer Porter appears to be dark amber to brown in color. There is a mild amount of visible carbonation and a swirling, barely there beige-colored veil. The aroma is a blend of coffee and thin roasted malt. There is a hint of tangy dark fruit and chocolate. Sweet caramelized malts, a nice balalcne of roasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate, and coffee meld together to form the flavor. This medium-bodied beer is surprisingly heavier and has a better mouthfeel than expected. Overall this is a fairly solid porter.

12 fluid ounce bottle (5.2% ALc. by Vol.) purchased at the The Brew Keeper brewpub in North Ridgeville, Ohio. Rating #11 for this beer.

22 oz bottle, via miketd. Pours a clear dark brown body with a small light brown head that fell to a thin ring. Very roasty nose with loads of coffee, but with a slightly off vegetal rubbery note. Light dark fruits and cocoa powder as well. Dry powdery cocoa flavor with coffee and a little bit of licorice. There’s some weirdness on the finish though, it tastes like rubber. Mouthfeel is soft and gentle up front with moderate soft fizzy carbonation, but finishes a little flabby and oily though. Overall, this was not an especially good effort.

On tap, poured black with a thin off white head. Big coffee aroma with some toasted oak and maple syrup. Thin body, but nice flavor, coffee, burnt caramel, some soy. Pretty nice porter.

Bottle purchased at brewery. Pour is dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is dark chocolat and coffee...really nice. Chocolate flavor too, but a bit thin. If they beef up the body this would be a very good porter.
