Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs. Pours a beautiful orange-gold color with a big rocky off-white head that craters and leaves some uneven lace. I just tried a Blind Pig this past weekend and never thought the aroma could be beaten; well, this equals it. Floral hops lead the charge, with nice orange and grapefruit citrus, mixed fruits, pine, sweet malts, and a bouquet of flowers. The flavor is still outstanding, but nothing could live up to that nose. Sweet caramel malts, grapefruit, bitter hops, pine, and floral notes. This isn’t a hop bomb and the 8% ABV is muted and just the perfect amount. Light-medium bodied, with average carbonation. Dry and resinous. A dry, bitter, semi-sweet finish. The Blind Pig and now this in just a few days- Russian River knows how to brew an IPA, and how to leave me overwhelmed.

On tap at Capone’s. Pours a nice golden color with a little white head. Has the smell of bananas and pine. Has a great piney citrus taste and is very well balanced. One of the best DIPAs no doubt. To bad isn’t more redly available.

From bottle : Pours a hazy, carbonated golden color with a finger of bubbley head. Thick lacing. Pine hops jump from the glass, with some citrus also noted. Taste is bitter and abrasive at first, mellows out toward the end but the bitter never stops, all the way into the aftertaste it still has that bitter bite. Has a pretty light body, with a slick feel in the mouth. Quite good, but i dont think it lived up to the hype....for me atleast.

Bottle at Chris_o’s "smash Kook’s granny tasting". Alround rating: Great citrusy grapefruit and lychee nose, balanced in a flavour profile manner, but has a great bitterness yet a body to hold it together. Excellent IPA.

Clear golden brown beneath a frothy white head. Amazing hop aroma, a blast of citrus and pine. Great balance, but the hop flavors really take over. Tons of juicy hop flavor pine, spruce and grapefruit zest. Finishes dry with some lingering lemon notes.
