rajendra82 (655), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Nov 28, 2008 Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #7 came to me in a trade from mhewes. I chose a flute to pour this into, and it looked much darker than I was expecting. When held up against the light, the deep brown liquid also proved to be as opaque as a stout. The head atop though was quite small to begin with, and did not last long enough for me to observe anything else about it.
The smell was classic Weizenbock, with equal parts of dark fruits like plums. and light ones like bananas. These were supplemented by earthy and spicy smelling noble hops and yeast. The taste was a lot lighter than I was expecting. The Weizen fruitiness and clove-banana flavor profile was there, but the bock like heft was lacking. The body was slippery and light, and the aftertaste consisted mostly of a dash of spice that faded rapidly.
Not quite as evocative as the benchmark Aventinus nor as innovative as the Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse. Odeed (1506), Bakersfield, California, USA Nov 28, 2008 (thanks to miketd for this)dark brown body with a light brown head.aroam is cloves, spice, caramel malts, and earth.flavor is much the same.pretty typical weizen bock. msante79 (339), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Nov 27, 2008 12oz bottle. Big thanks to Thickerfreakness for this one. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma is typical weizenbock with clove and banana with nice malt and brown sugar. Flavor is again big with clove and banana with nice maltiness, brown sugar and dark fruits. About as good as a weizenbock can get. Good stuff.
IrishBoy (2209), Bakersfield, California, USA Nov 19, 2008 12 oz bottle from Kaggie97; Thanks Kevin! Nose of banana, caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla; cloudy dark brown with a small, glass-lacing tan head; flavor is light hop bitterness, caramel, banana, light sweetness; nice thick body; finish light bitterness and caramel sweetness. shigadeyo (1500), Southwest Ohio Area, Alabama, USA Nov 17, 2008
10/22/2008: Holy crap! Even for a wiezenbock, Saint Arnold Divine Reserve No. 7 is much darker than expected. It is more or less the color of root beer, cloudy, and has a thin beige head. A darkly roasty, yet sweet (like molasses and cocoa nibs) aroma is paired with a strong, highly carameled banana, charred malt (chickory-like), and sweet, somewhat sugary yet dry flavor. It is really difficult to describe this beer, but I really like it. Maybe I should just say ’this is good shit’ and move on! Footnotes: Medium body, smooth, and very drinkable. Alcohol peaks out a little bit when it gets warmer. This is another well-crafted beer by Saint Arnold.
