Commercial Description:
Chicken Killer Barley Wine is the revolutionary beer that will someday define America's unique Barley Wine style. It is brewed with twice the ingredients of the Santa Fe Brewing Company's other beers, and only half the usual amount of liquid is extracted from these ingredients. This makes one strong beer. At over ten percent alcohol, Chicken Killer is actually as strong as wine, but this is not to say that it is difficult to drink. On the contrary; be careful with this one. The flavors of the beer are at first as overwhelming as the intense Santa Fe sun. But in the same way our sun gives us the unrivaled brilliant colors of Santa Fe, the potency of Chicken Killer gives us the remarkable spectrum of flavors that can be found in no other beer, in no other city. If you did not have the opportunity to try last year's vintage, come try this year's! Malts: 2-row pale, 30-37 l. Carastan, 135-165 l. Crystal Hops: Chinook, Hallertau, Crystal

Dark amber pour with tan head. Nose is sweet smelling with alcohol. Flavor is high in alcohol and some hoppy bitterness that is mellowed out with some sweetness from the malt. Thick chewy body.

(bottle - 22 oz) Murky brown color with a puffy tan head. Aroma is surprisingly light with good hints of sweet malts, caramel, alcohol, and yeast. Flavor is sweet and malty at the beginning with a nice and smooth balance of some of the floral hops. Caramel and sweet malts come through at the end and pair nicely with a decent amount of hop bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden.

A most drinkable barleywine. Nicely balanced with the caramel malting and the normal barleywine taste, some dates, this one will transition people to barleywines. Brownish colour with good head. Above average mouthfeel, although above average carbonation.

220z bottle, dark-amber color, with a fluffy beige head, sweet toasty malt, fruity nose of light candied orange peel, apricot esters, with a toffee, caramel, cookie dough accent within an alcoholic aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a sweet toasted, caramelized malt, cookie dough, fruity character, of still candied orange peel, faint peachy accent, with a toffeeish, mild butterscotch flavor, with a hint of flowery hop, within a mellow warmth mouthfeel, leading towards a warming, malty, fruity, lingering hop bitterness finish.

My Bottom Line:
Leafy and slightly resinous hoppiness latches on to fruity caramel malt character in this balanced but mostly uneventful Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the hazy red.
-Some worrisome leathery notes are found in the aroma.
-Simple cereal sweetness pleases but does not offer the personality and diversity I see in the best examples of the style.
-The body is healthy, but I find the flavor sequence to be lazier than the average Barley Wine’s.

Bottle.
