Blue Heron Brewpub Reviews

Strykzone
Blue Heron Shadowfax Blanc Wit 3.2
Sampled at great taste. A little white haze in this golden beer. A little sugary and a little fruity. Just a bit of Belgian yeast. Minimal bitterness and a little light oncarbonation.

Blue Heron Engagement ESB 3
Draft. Dark amber/brown pour. Super fruity in the smell and flavor. Fruity hops are abundant, some berry notes, malt comes in as it warms. Not a typical esb, more like a hoppy amber ale of some sort but decent.

Looks like a dark amber. Smells OK. Extract. Some roastiness, but not enough. More of a chocolate amber.

Blue Heron Tappers Tripel 3.3
Said it was 11 percent at the brewery. Complete sugar bomb. Still has some nice yeasty notes, but no subtlety. Not on par with a Belgian Ale in any way. Homebrew. OK.

Blue Heron Little E’s ESB 3.4
Tap at BH. Big fruity English Ale yeast tastes. Has a true-ish English feel, at least unique from the other beers on the menu. A little zesty and in your face though, lacks much subtlety. Pretty standard offering at the end of the day. OK.

Brigadier
Blue Heron Brandy Oaked Black Belgian Wheat 3.6
On tap at the GTMW 2013
The line at Blue Heron was pretty short and low key so during a lull I stopped by to see what was going on. This is an interesting experiment that almost works. That said I would no issues ordering a pint if I were ever in the vicinity.

Aroma / Appearance - The rich black base is sticky with sheer legs which is amazing for a 6% beer. Brandy, cola, and wheat mix sweetness and malts. The wit aspects feels as if they’ve been taken over by the French oak.

Flavor / Palate - Wheat and malt drive a strong first impression. The brandy emerges within a minute or so. The result tastes more like a mixed drink than a beer. Perhaps this should have been one of the Kuhnhenn Carnivale taps.

ElGaucho
Blue Heron Stormy’s Revenge IPA 3.6
Draft at brewpub. Hoppy aroma. Amber body with little to no head and no visible carbonation. Leaves good lace, however. Hops are balanced with a considerable malt backbone. Some pepper. A little bit of harshness on the finish, but not in a bad way. Very tasty. Gets a little sloppy as it warms, but a very good effort overall.

ElGaucho
Blue Heron Freewheelin’ Monk 3.5
On tap at the brewpub. Banana and clove esters are very evident in the flavor. Smooth, lightly carbonated. Belgian yeast notes. Flavorful for only 6.2% ABV. Surprisingly good.

LeRose
Blue Heron Honey Blonde Ale 3.5
On tap at restaurant in Wisconsin Rapids. Interesting deep golden color. Thick, rich head, excellent retention, strong lacing. Not much in the way if aroma. Some malty flavors, nice bitterness. Some citrus or grapefruit flavor. Pretty dry finish. Carbonation seemed a bt high. Overall, thought it was good tasting, better than average. A little bit if breadlines, some yeast flavor.

Ughsmash
Blue Heron Stranger In The Dark 3.5
On tap at GTMW. Poured deep brown with a dark creamy beige head. The aroma picked up sweet vanilla and chocolate with a nice, soft feel to it. The flavor found toasty chocolate and black malts at the core, with some malt-inspired sourness on the edges.. became a little sharp on the finish. Medium-bodied with higher, filling carbonation on the palate.. good except for some odd sourness.

Ughsmash
Blue Heron Possibly Wobbly 3.7
On tap at GTMW. Poured murky peach with an easily-resuscitated beige head. The aroma was decidedly warm and English-inspired, with toffee and bready malts leading.. spicy fruits, black pepper, and a hit of clove around.. warm and welcoming. The flavor found warm toffee malt at the core, with caramel showing as the drink progressed.. fruity bitterness and peppery alcohol through the otherwise sweet, warm finish. Medium-plus bodied with just the right amount of carbonation on the palate.. very good stuff!

madvike
Blue Heron Grapefruit IPA 2.6
On tap at GTMW - Pours rosy amber with a thin white head. Nose is sweet caramel and light citrus. Not all that pungent. Taste is onion, caramel, real sweet and bready without much in the way of hops. Thin and fluffy--big disappointment.

Blue Heron Stranger In The Dark 3

MIBRomeo
Blue Heron Possibly Wobbly 3.5
Pouring at GTMW 2012 Muddy off orange pour w/ a tiny tan head. English style aroma hints of toffee and a light pine. Avg palate. Flavor is toffee tons of what I called animal crackers and a lightly piney finish. Not special in the style but good and easy to drink anyway.

Blue Heron Stranger In The Dark 3.7
On tap at Blue Heron. Deep red-brown-black. A really nice big coffee stout. Mellow carbonation, mild to minimal hopping. All out roast malt bomb, a little oily but not syrupy or overly viscous. Highly respectable, one of the best WI stouts for sure.

JMerritt
Blue Heron MASH Tap 6.5 - Bourbon-Oaked Pandemonium Porter 2.6
On tap at the brew pub. So great to see the pub working closely with the local homebrew club, major props. Very dark brown with a small white head. Brown sugar aroma, no bourbon to speak of really. Flavor has some light bourbon notes as well as cocoa nibs, green grasses, light oak. Seems a little light in chocolate malts for a porter to me, so overall it seems a bit thin.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Soo Line Stout 3.6
Black with a large, light-brown head. Mildly smokey roasted coffee aroma with some underlying graham cracker and dark chocolate. Light-to-moderate bitterness with a decent roast. Sweet coffee/dark chocolate flavors mingle well together. Finishes mildly sweet and just a hair thin bodied.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Loch Ness Scotch Ale 2.7
On tap at the brew pub. Dark brown with orange tints. Medium sized light tan head is mostly diminishing. Caramel, mild peat and fresh dried grasses in the nose. Sweet flavor, modest caramel and toffee with very mild alcohol. Finish is moderately grainy. Just ok.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Roddis Bock 3.4
On tap at the brew pub. Dark garnet brown with a very small white head. Mild coffee, toffee, candied dates and brown sugar dominate the aroma. Moderately sweet flavor that slowly wanes, with notes of bakers chocolate, dusty wheat, caramel candies and old coffee. Sticky texture. Solid, though a little odd to be drinking on June 1.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Tappers Tripel 2.5
On tap at the brew pub. Clear golden with nearly no head. Slight honey aroma with light grains, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it banana and light-to-moderate alcohol. Wow, this is sweet - nearly mead-like in its initial honey/sugar sweetness - though it thankfully wanes into some graham cracker (though the burnt sugar finish lingers). Alcohol is noticeable. A far cry from a tripel, but not horrible.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Corey’s American Pale Ale (C.A.P.A.) 2.8
On tap at the brew pub. Sightly hazy yellow with orange edges and a small white head. Semi-strong nectarine and apricot aroma with light black pepper and vanilla cookies. Moderately bitter flavor that grows through the middle of the flavor profile with predominantly grapefruit rind notes. I swear I get notes of rye malt in the finish. A decent APA, but lacking in some malt balance.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Roundbarn Rye 3.3
On tap at the brew pub. Clear golden-red with a small white ring of a head. Sweet nose - vanilla malts, rye bread, some sort of candied berry (almost like a sugared mulberry). Spicy rye flavor is very prevalent up front, turning dry with some aspirin and calcium mineral notes. I get some sort of woody white oak in the lingering aftertaste. Solid.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Red, White, and Wheat 1.8
Hazy browned-yellow with a small ring of a white head. Such a light nose: very subtle hint of banana and orange zest is about it. Spicy flavor (muddled mix of white pepper and cloves) with heavy wheat and slightly soured wet prairie grasses. Finish is lightly bitter and mildly sour. A swing and a miss.
Friday, June 01, 2012

JMerritt
Blue Heron Tigers Eye Ale 2.8
On tap at the brew pub. Dark red-oranged brown with a long lasting off-white head. Somewhat cardboardy aroma with undertones of vanilla, oak, and wheat. Grain-forward flavor profile (straw, dried grasses, nutty stone-ground wheat) with oaky wood highlights. Watery, thin finish is unfortunate, but overall a drinkable, low-alcohol session beer.

JMerritt
Blue Heron Ol’ Blue’s Light 3
On tap at the brew pub. Clear golden with a thick, white head and nice lacing. Slightly corny aroma with light cranberry - light, yet inoffensive. Straw and wheat flavor with heavy rye and grains. Softly carbonated with a slick texture. Finish is astringent, slightly medicinal, strong of wheat and grasses. Actually a rather quaffable ale.

Skyview
Blue Heron Fanatic IPA 4
On draught at the Blue Heron brewpub in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Pours a bright copper amber colored IPA with a thick and creamy off-white head that has excellent retention and thick lacing. Aroma of citrus zest, a hint of pine, grapefruit and a hint of caramel. Taste is medium bodied, lots of hops to even detect which ones were used. Citrus, grassy, floral, dry English-style, and then a few I am not familiar with. Finish has a noble sharp bitterness and a lingering semi-dry grapefruit aftertaste.
