Sambrooks No 5 Barley Wine 3.3
Bottle at home from ales by mail
pours slightly hazy mid golden brown, fluffy beige head collapsing to lacing, rich, golden syrup, dried fruits, not massively sweet, but low level of bitterness, full bodied, heavy, boozy, lots of yeast character. As barley wines go its fairly decent though not really my thing

Sambrooks Four Chimneys Chocolate Stout 2.8
Cask at Good Yarn Uxbridge. Pours dark with a thin off white head. Not a huge aroma, but vague chocolatey coffee notes as it warms. Chocolate really comes through on the task, but it is very thin and watery. Nice taste but overall a disappointing beer due to the lack of mouthfeel.

Bottle from Beduth TossCo of all places. Expected twigs got pleasant dull caramel on biscuit with washy hedgerow and Bramley fruit. Aroma of gentle clove spice, wholemeal biscuit and plum. Pours brassy amber with an evanescent scum of head. functional tawny brown bitter with a rinse of noncommittal fruit. And a background stir of twig, admittedly.

A bit disappointing. - not much rye ( or any other) character. Was distracted by the higher abv and expected more. Oh well, next!...

Sambrooks Battersea IPA 2.6
Keg at The Rocket, Putney. Clear amber orange, still, small foamy white head, dotted lacing. Aroma is Haribo sweets, some fudge. Body is medium, smooth, tingly carbonation. Taste is toffee, twiggy, sweet caramel, metallics, very light malts. A bit of a weird vibe overall. Not great at all.

Flavour is composed of nutty light toffied malts, raisin and dried apples, little dishwater. Some rough grains in the finish. Palate is medium sweet, moderate cask condition. OK bitter but pretty boring.

Sambrooks Red Ale 3.2
Cask at The Railway, Richmond as ’Sambrooks Red Ale’. Very dark orange, clear, still, smal scummy tan head, full lacing. Aroma is light toffee sweetness, raisin. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is bready malt, twiggy, some toffee but leans towards dry rather than sweet, some tangy cranberry and cardboard / flannel in the finish. Leaves the mouth dry. Alright stuff. Well balanced.

Sambrooks Battersea Rye 3
330ml bottle from Marks & Spencer:
An okay first offering from Sambrook’s but nothing special. Bitter & earthy with some medium strength sugars but not enough sweetness. There’s a subtle hop presence & it was easy enough to drink without being too memorable.

Sambrooks Lavender Hill 3.2
Cask (Draft House Westbridge, Clapham)
Light floral aroma. Nice pale orange, small loose head. Nice honey in the taste. A light palate, decent drinkability. More of a traditional honey-ey malty bitter than most previous Sambrooks, but a lot of the Sambrooks have been from the Bree Louise, which had massively spooned them. Finish gently sweet and malty. Nice bitter.

Rich heavy aroma with lots of rye and dark grains. Some marmite. Lovely full right grainy body, sweet. Even warm and sweet it’s not sticky. Nice roast works well as an early morning coffee substitute. And basically as breakfast.
