Hoped for more from this. Pours with very low carbonation: almost flat, like a Lilt. Aroma is pretty non deScript: sour lambic nose, ginger beerish. Nice light Amber colour, tiny white head. Taste is actually surprisingly non sweet. I mean it’s sweetish, but lots of French beer with added sugar, like this one, have a syrupy taste. This is light. Ginger beer straight off the bat with a sour mouldiness, but not overly strong. Peppery, hoppy middle which offsets the sweetness nicely. Chilli comes through after the swallow. Again, not overpowering but you know it’s brewed with chili. Quite pleasant and definitely interesting. But the overall background beer taste surrounding the spices isn’t quite up to snuff enough to make it a great beer. It’s a little watery and under carbonated which makes the whole experience a little underwhelming. Definitely pick it up though for an experience.

This entry is a bit messy, maybe the brewer should clear things up? Anyway, I’m putting my rating here based on the beer label, feel free to move it if needed. Shared by Eve-Marie, thanks a lot sister! Pours a hazy pale yellow with a small white head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of intense citrus, super orange and lemon. Taste is quite bitter (medium-high) and dry with more citrus, light spices and pine. Assertive bitter finish, almost too much. Body is light to medium and carbonation moderate. Overall a fairly interesting white IPA and my first go at Brasserie des Garrigues, not bad!

Garrigues L’Hivern’Ale 2011 (12.2°)
Tasting a French beer seems appropriate today so I dug this one from the cellar, very heavy winter ale, vintage 2011 with best before date April 27th, 2013. Loose, milky, irregular, pale greyish white head on top of a hazy mahogany brown beer. Strong aroma of brown bread (soggy rye bread even), chestnuts, caramel, pear brandy, blue plums, medlar, coriander seed, damp autumn leaves, dried thyme and ginger, bitter chocolate, a lot of oxidized sherry, marmelade, calvados, earthy horseradish, honey, white pepper. Sweetish onset, brown sugar, raisins, overripe pear, balanced with a deep basic sourishness and some citrus fraîcheur (curaçao, I guess); soft carbo, smooth and thick, ’fat’ and somewhat resinous mouthfeel, caramelly, clearly (yeast) bready and nutty with a chocolatey edge, while spicy yeastiness builds as well as coriander flavour and a strong, calvados-like alcohol presence, a bit astringent on the tongue but still fairly soft, yet providing a great deal of warmth in the finish; toasted bittersweetness remains along with this alcohol warmth, bittersweet and somewhat sticky coriander and a very earthy, leafy, herbal, mild hop bitterishness. Feels very Belgian, I’d classify this as a quadrupel much more than as a barley wine. Apart from style, this does not hide its ABV all too well, but if treated as a slow sipper in front of a roaring fire, it will surely deliver what it promises. Interesting find and stood the test of time quite well, as the oxidation is still limited, and only adds and extra layer of flavour to an already relatively rich texture.

33cL bottle from L’échoppe Médiévale, consumed in hotel room, poured into Cantillon Iris glass. Cap popped and beer slowly foams up the neck of the bottle. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is acidic black malts, not sweet, low hoppiness. Flavor is similar acidic black, tingly malts. Has a little coffee but finishes with a malt bitter and acidic malts. Just a lot of acidic black malts, makes it a bit like coffee grinds without the coffee. Light feeling though. Decent stuff, just a bit to acidic and needs a little sweetness.

33cL bottle from L’échoppe Médiévale. Poured into Cantillon Iris glass in hotel room. Very dark brown, almost black color. From whiff one, this is the most un-weizenbocky weizenbock I have ever had. No banana esters at all. Just sort of a dark malt strong brown. Low hops, some sweet malt syrup, slightly undercarded. Eh, again a French beer with an amateurish feel and I would definitely never think this is a weizenbock.
