473mL can. Pours clear amber with almost no head. Aroma is quite sweet and flowery; maybe a bit smokey? Flavour has some caramel malts, a bit floral, some whiskey. Whiskey also hits on the back of the palate in a less pleasant way. Errs on the sweet side, whiskey not well incorporated. Had potential, but after a couple ounces the negative components became more pronounced.

16 oz. can, pours a clear dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma reveals gently peated whiskey barrels, toasted caramel, and bready malt. Flavour has toasted caramel, bready malt, and a hint of whiskey barrels. There's some interesting fruity esters in here I wouldn't have expected. Lots of vanillin on the finish, but there's not much complexity and the palate is too light. Interesting, despite not being totally on-point.

When i see "british style" and "cask" i am wary. Not to worry here. beer cooler than room temp, and a clear golden amber with of course a frothy white head/ The aroma more grain than hop, but fairly hoppy flavorwise, though a little metallic. A little thin on the palate, easy drinking for sure. The beer list said 5.8%, and seems to be a regular on tap, so not seasonal

The whiskey & fruit aromas bring a Manhattan to mind, throw in a little smoke. Flavor-wise I get vanilla, oak, ginger and alcohol. Light tan head over clear medium brown. Gentle in the mouth, Fruity alcohol finish.

Draft at PreFunk. Golden pour, a little cloudy, small white foamy head. Aroma features mild citrusy notesand a bit of a Belgian vibe. Taste comes off like a cross between a hazy IPA and a saison, minor hoppiness and a little Belgian yeast.

Bottle: Poured a pale yellow color gruit with a small white foamy head with light retention and light lacing. Aroma of light tart notes with some herbal notes and faint vinous/gin barrel notes. Taste is also a mix of tart/acidic notes, light funky yeast notes with some faint wine barrel and gin barrel notes. Body is about average with medium carbonation. Interesting mix of flavors but a little more acidic than I was hoping for.

Kicsi, gyorsan elillanó hab, narancsba hajló szín. Animális, gabonás, szőlős, kissé fűszeres és tölgyfahordós illat. A korty határozott animalitással indít, majd fűszeres, gabonás, savanykás szőlős, licsis, hordós ízekkel folytatódik, lecsengése leheletnyit keserű és borsos. Közepesen testes, enyhén szénsavas, alig keserű. Nagyon finom, komplex, frissítő.

On tap at Chuck’s CD, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out bitter raspberry leaves, rustic saison yeast, and some oaky bugginess. Flavour is bitter, with lots of rustic saison yeast, bitter berry leaf, and toasted grains. Very bitter but lacks dynamism and depth. Meh.

Upright Six (#6)
Procured at El Cerrito Liquor from Corona, California for $9.99, Six is a rye beer with pale, caramel, and rye malts, black barley, saison yeast, and Magnum and Tettnanger hops crafted by Upright Brewing Company from Portland, Oregon. The scent of caramel, chocolate, and cherries are felt upon the nose. The appearance is a dark auburn that pours a low beige head that dissipates gradually with some circular retention remaining and similar lacing. When held up to light, the color changes to a crimson hue, and unveils a clear body. Dark mahogany shows when light reflects off the surface of the beer. The alcohol content is 6.7%. Caramel is slightly rich, malty to the touch, and deepened by a nutty black barley. Rye mildly spices the take, and blends with the caramel malt and black barley tandem, which is broadened by chocolate malt. Magnum hops adds a subtle bitterness to the take, and renders nutmeg and black pepper notes to the malty comprehension. Saison fairly creams the drink, imbued with a pale malt tint, and dries the finish. Cherries lightly tarts the take, coalesces with the caramel, chocolate, and saison mixture, sweetens the beverage, and persists into the finish. Tettnanger hops assists with the spice sensation, and imparts a citrus flavor that compliments the caramel and cherry. Raisins expands upon the caramel, chocolate, and cherry finish. Six is a scintillating rye beer. Caramel, chocolate, and pale malts, black barley, rye, saison, cherries, raisins, and Magnum and Tettnanger hops combines into a gorgeous craft beer. Saison smoothens the drink while dampening the rye and Tettnanger hop spice, cherry tart, and Magnum hop bitterness upon the take. Caramel and chocolate malts blends with the saison and cherries, which is complimented by the nutty black barley and the nutmeg and black pepper like Magnum hops. The malty, rye, and yeasty composition fairly weighs the body, which is accented by the rye. Caramel, chocolate, black barley, cherries, raisins, black pepper, saison, and pale malt persists into the relatively dry finish. I treasured each drink, and dazzled by the rye and cherry tandem to this brew. Cheers. Prost. Drink for the love of beer. For more beer reviews, visit and follow my blog “Drink For the Love of Beer.”

On tap @ Upright. Clear light amber colored beer with a white head. Well, this certainly lives up to the old part of the name... Caramel, grass, earth, and pithy citrus notes. Some pine as well. Moderate bitterness on the finish. Sweet caramel malts and bread up front. Not really what I'm into these days, but not a badly made beer.

On tap @ Upright. While not a bad beer, it doesn't really strike me as a kolsch. Cloudy straw colored beer with a white head. Quite malt forward and even somewhat sweet which also isn't very kolsch-like. Some floral hops, apple, orange rind, and a mild bitterness. It's not a bad beer, but wouldn't call it a kolsch.

On tap @ John's Marketplace. Pours a lightly hazed yellow color with a white head. This is really nice, wow. Hints of unripe strawberry with zesty lemon and lime. A touch of honeydew, some white pepper, and yeast. Slight sourdough note as well. Mild grass and straw that adds a hint of bitterness. Some good pale malt flavor that adds a touch of sweetness. Maybe a subtle herbal note on the finish. Really liked this one.

Can. Super odd new school west coast IPA. Clear light-amber pour. Really, really bready. Aroma almost seems a bit aged. Minimal oily bitterness. A bit oily. Lots of orange zest, as Reid notes. Kind of thin for the ABV and style. Tasty but strange.

Upright Heart's Beat
2016 bottle courtesy of Lardo Rick. Colour…gorgeous ruby with a thin head. Nose…eminently fruity ( cherries of course) with loads of funk to boot. Palate…tight and brut like with an initial wave of oxidation that eventually faded away. The cherries made quite an appearance afterward and stayed through the remainder of the experience. Light sweetness hit the back of the palate as did a doughy aspect and the finish was long and fruity. I’d say this held up well after seven years.

Undated shelf turd, drunk 5/6/23. Clear, bright bronze-honey-maize. Small, off-white head, low retention. Wildflowers, lilac, honey, floral notes and soft barrel. Gentle acidity with plentiful brett and light lactic notes. Clean. Soft, malty, quite malty actually, maybe too malty? It's close. Tons of brett and a very honey-herbal-like quality. Floral with more honey-like malt and biscuit. Clean, low acidity. Low barrel character. Easygoing, drinkable, fruity.

Upright Ives - Blend Five
Undated bottle, but I think it's 2019, a shelf turd, drunk 4/21/23. Clear cherry pie with deep brass/bronze hues. Small, pinkish-tinged, white head is small, sitting at spotty cover. Nose is ebullient cherry, very meaty and juicy. Good sourness with light-to-moderate brett and moderate lactic acidity and probably some malic in there too. Doesn't seem acetic and malts are gentle showing wheat softness that helps take any potential edge off of things. Juicy and aromatic with zero aggression. Great cherry balance; it doesn't dominate but is quite present. Soft, juicy, with hints of medicinal Brett and lovely cherry pie character. Hard to see where the cherry fruit starts and the cherry-like Brett ends. Really nicely homogenized and soft as all hell thanks to the wheat. More tart than sour, but still some malo-lactic character to give a burst of sourness up front, providing brightness to balance the mega-soft, chewy wheat. Well, damn. This is just phenomenal, phenomenal stuff. So balanced and easygoing, yet incredibly flavorful. All the best acids here too with no heavy lactic and zero acetic. It's not surprising, given how good Fantasia is. Should pay more attention to these guys.
