Prachtig, helder bier met complexe gele tinten die helemaal tot hun recht komen dankzij het nauwelijks aanwezige koolzuur. Aroma en smaak verder complexloos honingzacht. Licht moutig. Niet uitgesproken zoet, geen bitterheid geproefd. Voor de liefhebbers.

Aroma:
Slight/medium aroma of malts, caramel, honey and spices.

Appearance:
Clear/hazy golden/amber beer with a slight/medium off-white head.

Taste/Palate:
Starts medium/heavy sweet with malts, caramel and honey; ends slightly/medium dry with spices.

Overall:
This beer is intense, complex and balanced. The spices and honey create an almost perfume like aroma and flavour. I guess this beer could easily be mistaken for simple, but I myself do believe it is not.

Bottle - Cloudy pale straw colour, large, dense white foamy head, fair retention. Spicy and wheaty nose with some dough, coriander, orange peel, crushed wheat. Taste is a bit sourish, some bread, orange, lemon, coriander, some honey tones. Light body, lively carbonation, slick mouthfeel, refreshingly dry finish. Nice wit, but not the best at all.

Bottle - Slightly cloudy golden colour, medium foamy white head with average retention. Sweet candy nose with some peach, apple, yeast and tutti frutti bubble gum. Tase is fruity and sweet, hop bitteress stays in the background. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, a bit watery texture, dry finish. Typical belgian blonde, nothing extra.

Bottle - Slightly hazy brown colour, medium beige head, good retention and fine lacing. Fine toasted malt aromas with toffee, nut, raisins, dried fruits, some rd berries, low herbal hops. Taste is sweet, fruity and nutty, hop bitterness smoothens into it. Medium body, smooth carbonation, sticky texture, toasted finish. Nice dubbel, but not my favourite.

Pale blond colour. Aroma is a bit grassy as is the flavour. Seems less punchy than its previous incarnations. Some floral hop notes come through strongly in the finish.

Lefebvre Hopus Primeur 2016
The newest incarnation of this hoppy version of Hopus, Lefebvre’s greatest hit at the moment. Extremely thick and rocky, coarse, egg-white head retaining towering high for a long time and at the same time leaving thick ’papery’ lacing on the edge of the glass; clear deep golden blonde colour with somewhat greenish hue, almost looking like a Duvel. Aroma of freshly cut garden weeds, sorrel, nettles, unripe gooseberry, banana ester including a certain amount of bubblegum, green apple peel, straw, wormwood, field flowers, gin, honey, tulip, jute, unripe plum. Crisp onset, sourish gooseberry and green plum mingled with a sweetish hint of banana and peach, strong carbonation distracting from the overall flavor and stinging the tongue for a long time, supple malt body, pale malt sweetishness, bit grainy but acquiring a light breadiness towards the end, where the hops come in, in a perfectly balanced, ’European’, noble kind of way, grassy, earthy and very floral, leaving a good amount of peppery bitterness drying the back of the mouth without becoming harsh; gin-like alcohol brings a warming glow after swallowing. Like the other editions of this brew and like many other modern hop-forward Belgian ales produced by established breweries, this meets the requirements of a ’Belgian IPA’ classification, but in the old school, ’noble hops’ way. The Duvel Tripel Hop editions, upon which this series seems to be inspired, are more exciting I think because of the hop varieties they use, but this one, in all its ’Belgian-ness’, is surely enjoyable. I do not find a lot of difference with the other vintages, though, but then I haven’t been following this series in detail.

Aroma:
Medium aroma of malts, caramel, Belgian yeast, honey, nuts and spices.

Appearance:
Turbid/opaque orange/brown beer with a slight/medium off-white head.

Taste/Palate:
Medium sweet with malts, caramel, Belgian yeast, honey, nuts and spices.

Overall:
This beer is rather intense, complex and balanced. The caramel and nuts flavour make this tripel so unique. I would not say this is a tripel at all, but that is what makes this beer.

Aroma of syrupy malts, cane sugar, yellow fruit (mango, melon, peach), some spices (cinnamon, coriander, flowers, yeast), hints of citrus, decent but anonymous bittering hops. Taste is sugary and a little acidic. Carbonated, creamy texture, medium body. Moderately dry finish, light alcoholic, spiced.

Hazy straw golden appearance with a noticeable head. It’s full of apples and sugar, no bitterness at all and the sweetness feels somewhat forced. Apples, yeast, a bit of cloves too and overall a taste that’s not reminiscent of a beer, nor a cider, but an artificial canned juice. I’d rather avoid it.

33cl bottle, served in trappist glass. Poured a cloudy, hazy amber with a 3 finger white head, nice lacing. Aroma: hay, grass, caramel, orange peels. Taste: Continuation of the aromas with additional notes of citrus, toast, spices, nuts, banana, Belgian yeast, cereal, vanilla. Such a creamy mouthfeel. Medium body with a nice spicy and bittersweet finish. Overall a very good brew. Nice balance between the hops and the malt.
