3.5 Hof Ten Dormaal Zure van Tildonk - Stekelbees Hof ten Dormaal recently participated in a television show where the host (a comedian and economist) helps distressed companies on their feet again - an appearance in mainstream media which generated a lot of buzz in the beer world. Frankly I had no idea this company was struggling that much and apparently had to seriously cut in their assortment, now selling (only) their restyled saison as well as their chicory beer through the Delhaize supermarket chain - a choice for financial security which I can certainly understand. After watching the show and out of sympathy for Hof ten Dormaal, and after realising that it has indeed been quite a while since I last had a beer by them, I decided to track down one I had not yet rated: the gooseberry version of their core sour ale, Zure van Tildonk, the future of which has meanwhile become uncertain. Snow white, opening, irregular, initially moussey but quickly dissolving and eventually disappearing head on a hazy peach blonde beer with beige tinge. Aroma of 'Belgian pickles'-flavoured crisps (oddly!), yellow curry powder even, old potatoes, green apple, lemon juice, very old cigarette shag, dandelions, sorrel, jute, old cracked leather (Brett) - but no discernible gooseberries, strangely... Tart onset, fruity indeed but not as berry-juicy as I was expecting (and hoping), yet still tasting much more like gooseberry than it smells; hints of yellow plum, green apple and sour green tomato join in. Softish carb, rounded mouthfeel with thin lemony sourness at the edges and a deeper lactic tartness further on, bit sourdoughy, while leathery Brettanomyces effects creep in, eventually becoming quite dominant, with even a very vague smoky touch to it. Dry and 'wild' finish in that sense, where the hops remain hidden behind the curtains (as is often the case in sour beer styles); stonefruity tartness in the end, though this actually must come from the gooseberries, but that coarse leathery Brett effect remains dominant. Very Brett-forward - and at this age (the bottle was a few years old) I think the wild yeast has eaten most everything including the gooseberries - with unexpected, though admittedly interesting results. Quite an oddity, but nowhere unpleasant. Saturday, March 2, 2024

3.6 Hof Ten Dormaal Golden Delicious Edition 2022 Bottle. "Apple Champagne Beer" according to the label. Made with apple juice as one of the ingredients. Color: Lightly hazy pale golden, frothy white head. Aroma: Malty, yeasty, some apple. Taste: Brut, Champagne like, dry and crisp, yeasty, mixed with notes of apple and funky hints. Starting and finishing a bit more Champagne like and the apple comes forward in between. Moderate sweet, slight fruity tartness and very low bitterness. Well... what to say more about it? Exactly what's stated on the label: Apple Champagne beer. Interesting brew. Glad to have tasted it. Thursday, February 29, 2024

3.8 Hof Ten Dormaal Barbera Bottled, huge thanks Stefan! Unknown vintage, earlier than 2017 apparently, 7.5%. Hazy orange-golden body, some quickly disappearing off-white head. Pleasant aroma, funk, grapes, wine notes, some sourness. Sweet and sour taste, grapes, light malty touches, quite well balanced and well integrated fruitiness, moreish almost, the sourness isn't too excessive but goes well with the body. Aged quite well! 3.5 Hof Ten Dormaal Barbera A 330ml bottle, with a best before date of September 2028. Poured into a Tilquin stemmed glass. It was a hazy dark amber orange colour with a very thin head that disappeared almost immediately, and pretty much no lacing. Aromas tart, red wine grape skin, vinous, oak, yoghurt, with light citrus zest notes. Tastes sour, tart, redcurrant, unripe grapes, grape skin, fruited vinegar, caramel, oak. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, aroma was quite good, but was hoping for more carbonation and less vinegar. Tuesday, November 28, 2023

3 Hof Ten Dormaal BA Project 2014 (Blond Ale) Porto This is a backlog rating from a bottle picked up at Party Source and shared with family in 2016, from notes. I took notes on every beer that I had, but didn't rate most because they were below average to average and my time was better spent with family or work. Technology, or the lack thereof, also contributed to the backlog. Words to describe this beer are sweet fruits, malty, acetone, caramel, this seemed off compared to others. 3.5 Hof Ten Dormaal Lost Bunker 20 May 2023. At Leuven Innovation Beer Festival. Shared with the lovely Anke! A: hazy amber, no head. A: overripe green apple, wet wood, candied plum, honey, brandy. T: very sweet green apple, pear, plum, biscuit, caramel & jam. F: vague herbal hops, bit phenolic, sweet ripe apple, wet wood and warming brandy-like alcohol. P: medium body, oily texture, flat carbonation. The remnants of an 'Amber' are certainly there whilst being slightly too flat and sweet. Enjoyable nonetheless and 12% is hardly recognised. 3.6 Hof Ten Dormaal Lost Bunker Wood-aged ‘strong amber beer’, so in effect a Belgian style barleywine of sorts, by Hof ten Dormaal; sampled at LIBF, organized in part by this brewery. Apparently this beer has spent years in barrels and those barrels were set up in a bunker of some kind (a remainder of the Second World War, I presume – but I have no idea how much of this story is true)… Off-white, loose, thin and breaking, open to dissolving head, hazy brownish-tinged dark peach blonde robe, perhaps not a true reddish amber, but close. Aroma of honey and honey liqueur, oxidized sweet sherry (unsurprisingly), brioche bread, soggy biscuit, caramel, rum-soaked apricots, yellow raisins, straw, candied orange peel, apple juice, pear, brandy, dandelion, old wood, cooked carrot. Sweet onset, mandarin and candied orange aspects, honeydew, pear and ripe peach, soft carb but full, somewhat vinous, rounded mouthfeel; biscuity, sweet-bready and lightly caramel-edged maltiness under ongoing honeyish sweetness and some spicy phenols, moving towards a warming, yeasty and still very sweet finish where residual sugars completely overrule a slight dash of herbal hops as well as soft woody tannins, though the latter are certainly present. Somewhat ‘dirty’ in the end too, especially from another tasting glass that had quite large flakes of protein swirling around. Could have been less sweet, even if I am full aware that much of the hop bitterness (if any) has disappeared by now, and more complex; weirdly feels a lot younger than it is. Odd, but not bad. 3.4 Hof Ten Dormaal Tripel Bottle from dranken Verheyen in Poppel, Belgium. The beer is hazy golden colored with a stable foam. Carbonation is good. The aroma is malts, citrus, grains, little smoke, funky yeast, grass and spices. The taste is sweet malty and goes to bitterness with citrus, grains, funky yeast, a little smoke and spices. The finish is dry, bitter and leaves a weird taste. Sunday, May 14, 2023
