On draft. Was the Helles. Pale yellow color with one finger head. Malty and grassy aroma. Taste is similar, but it is easy to drink and clean. Usually the same story with German beers, no innovation, but stick to the style exactly.

Vom Faß auf dem Fränkischen Bierfest, Nürnberg, 20.6.2014. - Orangegelb, leicht trüb. - Frisch zitroniger, etwas künstlich wirkender Antrunk; etwas harsch. Schlank und frisch, leicht limonadenartig. Durchschnittlich rezent. - Sehr zitrusartig-hopfenherber Nachtrunk. - Schön frisch gehopftes, aber ein wenig einseitiges Kellerbier.

on tap at the fraenkisches bierfest 2013 in nuremburg. very murky yellow with a fluffy, fairy floss head; loads of banana and vanilla in the aroma; initially very sweet, banana cheesecake, but with just enough earthy spice and grassy hop to balance it all nicely

Hembacher Kellerbier
Draft at Fränkisches Bierfest in Nürnberg, May 2013: Pale straw. Creamy, fine-bubbled but thin foam. Expressively hoppy nose of vibrant lemon balm, nectarine, mineral, fresh baguette pils malt, and a rustic hint of sulfur. Firm and snug carbonation. Strikingly clean with a firm dose of scratchy minerals and dry baguette flavors swirled with gradually unravelling lemon rock candy and sweet flower nectar. Dab of uncured hay grassiness mirrors the spice, greenly grassy hop kiss which exhibits notable depth. Progressively crackery and haylike, with the faintest edge of coarse toast. Lots of dusty pils malt textures, as well, which caress the elegant, finespun Spalt. Quite dry, yet with ample lemon juiciness and floral softness to accompany a clean, gently biting yeastiness which coats the tongue and imparts more complexity. A fairly characterful example that’s quite lean and showcases a very bright Spalt hoppiness. So drinkable. Their Stöffla was also pleasant, which makes me eager to try the Zwickel Pils.

Hembacher Stöffla
Draft at Fränkisches Bierfest in Nürnberg.
Dunkles naturtrüb kellerbier.
Beautiful sea foam off-white head atop a gorgeously hazy chestnut-colored body.
Cookie-ish malty aroma of baked bread, spiced apples, cinnamon, toast, caramel.
Hoppy and juicy in a mandarin orange / maraschino cherry way.
Rich, sweet malt showing great firmness throughout.
Creamy, soft, filling carbonation.
Wonderfully expressive with no noticeable brewing flaws.
Bread crusts, tangy apricot / tangerine / mandarin orange hop flavors
Very juicy, very soft and very luscious. Fantastic-looking pour.
A favorite from the fest. Yeastier than most dunkles kellerbier, but the flavor and aroma are so vibrant and expressive, and the malt texture is ridiculously soft. In the kellerbier you could see they were close, and I was probably harsher in my rating there than I should be, given the noticeable difference between kegs one day versus the next. So, the helles Kellerbier was *almost* in that high-3-to-low-4 range, if only the laundry soap and starchy malt was taken care of. The Stöffla is proof they are capable of amazing beer.

Hembacher Kellerbier
Draft at Fränkisches Bierfest in Nürnberg.
Hazy rich yellow body, fine white head.
Lemon pith / juice hop character to the nose.
Some dish soap esters (okay) and laundry detergent (not okay).
Floral, tart lemon and pils malt flavor.
Waxy / oily at times; yeasty and dirty.
Starchy, rough grain malt texture
Finish of sharp lemon-scented laundry soap finish.
Second try a day or two later still had some of the same off-notes but they weren’t as bullish.

Draft @ Die Frankisches Bierfest 09. Hazy yellow, scant but tight white head. Nice kellerbier aroma with nice orange pith hoppiness and yeast. Granular body. Lemon notes. Not super hoppy. Having said that, the sweet grain is excellent and the crisp finish indicates a judiciously hopped beer. Am really liking this new brewery...
