BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien (2015)
Draught at Lord Hobo, 5/13/16.
Dark amber with some lighter maize and copper hues throughout and a beige head atop showing moderate to moderately-strong retention. Not quite hazy, but not completely clear either.
Great blend of various bacterial/yeast acids rise up in the nose, with strong brett fruitiness and a noticeable but still reserved acetic character, as well. Malt balances nicely, adding toffee and very light vanilla-chocolate, as red fruit notes also enter in to the mix. Alcohol nicely concealed, with no flaws. Good musty, cellar qualities emanate softly, but yet it doesn’t seem dull/old/muted whatsoever.
Sweet, to some extent, though maybe just moreso than your average sour ale. Wouldn’t call it overly sweet. Great maltiness to it, with a soft texture and ample, light, engaging carbonation. Sourness is moderate and balances the maltiness wonderfully as red fruits, toffee, acetic acid and brighter brett notes all enter in to the mix. For the most part, I’ve found this beer to best while young and this fresh vintage is indeed bright, flavorful and drinkable.

@Solothurner Biertage 2016; courtesy of Carole Waser - hazy amber beer with a poor head retention; evident notes of red wine barrel, light acetic, notes of cherries and pears; full-bodied, fairly sour; dry and long sour finish of prunes and wood - wonderful as always for this serie

On tap at Deep Ellum. Pours a dark brown with a thin white head. Aroma of sour fruits, light bourbon/booze. Smells like a boozy Flanders ale. Flavor of tart sour fruit, sour malt, booze, vanilla, bourbon. Not as terrible as I was expecting, tastes like a strong Flanders sour. But it is hard to drink. 7/4/7/3/14 (3.5/5)

Bottle, which damn well said 2014 on the neck tag. Oh well. Pours quite hazy orangish with a small off-white head that dissipates quickly with a hint of lacing. Aroma is acetic, oaky, vinous, cherry, tannic. Flavor is light plus sweet, light plus tart, acetic with some sweetness and oak tannin. Medium body. I am a fan of the Bon-Chien series, and this is no different.

Draft @ Moeder Lambic Original. Couleur brune foncée, col offre qcq fines bulles beiges.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - hazy golden amber with some head. Nose - tonnes of tropical fruit, tonnes of yeast. Reminds me of Kernel. Very resiny. Taste - quite fruity yet drying smoked malt on the end. Palate - light to medium bodied with a tangy yet dry and smoky texture and a long dry smoky finish. Overall - interesting and quite good.

BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien (2015)
On tap at Friends of Ham, Leeds. Served in a wine glass, it poured dark brown, hazy, and with minimal condition. Initially it had a strong overpowering sourness, however this soon mellowed a little to reveal lots of citrus flavours. I detected fruits of the forest, gooseberry, lemon, lime, and seville orange. Very easy to drink for its strength. If, like me, you like sour beers, then this is a sensational beer with a riot of complex flavours

BFM Tarry Suchong
As BATS ("bière artisanale ambrée non filtrée et parfumée au Tarry Suchong"), which seems to be the alias of this beer for the 75 cl bottles, which is what I had this from. Medium, moussy, lightly lacing, egg-white, quite stable head over an initially clear, deep ’autumny’ and coppery amber coloured beer with quiet but steady fizz, more hazy and darker (hovering towards bronze) with deposit. Aroma indeed has that combo of Chinese black tea and smoked meat (or even slight pipe tobacco ashes) which can be expected from something flavored with ’tarry Souchong’ but in a more subtle way than expected (and hoped) especially seen the fact that the tea in question is a tea smoked over burning pine tar; this aspect, though defining for the beer and quite prevalent, is embedded in other impressions of caramel, lots of soap, ’natural’ iron, red apple peel, hazelnut, toasted bread, dried red berries and even a hint of fresh raspberry, wet leather not unlike in a Brett-refermented beer like e.g. Orval, damp tree leaves, dried banana somewhere, dusty earth, bitter honey, faint hints of kombucha, fresh green seaweed, nutmeg and beetroot. Crisp, fruity onset, not overly estery but rather restrained, more ’dried fruit’ sweetishness (dried plantain, some dried fig) with red berry sourishness surrounding it as well as a softly ’seaweedy’ umami presence, medium carbo, smooth and somewhat oily, lean body. Very caramelly and toasted malt body, sweetish and bitterish (the latter more so in the end), like any full-bodied Belgian or French amber ale; meanwhile the smoked tea factor leaves an even more oily, if not resinous effect sticking to the mouth cavity, bringing subtle umami and spicy flavors with retronasally that combo of black tea and (mostly) smoked bacon again; finishes juicy with a slight metallic ’zing’ to it, very malty, nutty, toasted and caramelly, but low in bitterness, though a late and brief spicy hop bitterness does show up in the end. The resinous black tea flavor lingers a bit, clinging to the nutty malt bittersweetness that goes down into the throat. A smoked beer mostly in the metaphorical / indirect sense of the word, the smoked factor being sufficiently potent to justify its classification, but having read earlier reviews of it (not just on this site), I must admit I expected more ’oumph’ and something a bit more extreme. This is a classic Belgo-French ’ambrée’ (think Wallonian ambrée or amber-hued bière de garde) with notable black tea- and smoked bacon-flavors on top, rather than being thoroughly permeated by them. Spice amber ale with a smoky profile, let’s say, somehow the flavors work well together for me, but should have been more pronounced. In all: less extreme than the label suggests, but a very drinkable, appetizing beer which I could perhaps recommend to people as an introduction to the smoked beer world. I did enjoy it, after all, if only because this combination of flavors still makes this an interesting beer, regardless.

On tap at Bigby’s Pour House in Addison, IL. and snifter served showing a hazed, orangey gold color, with a frothy layer of soft white head foam that hung around for awhile, and curtainy to web-like cling to the lacing. The nose was fruity yet tart, with citrus as orange, light yeasty funk, and hints of sweetness & oakiness. Medium bodied, with a decent level of showcasing carbonation, the taste presented a nice cooperation of tartness, moderate, earthy bitterness, and pleasant dryness into the finish. Very appealing and balanced components that I wanted to last for the price, but too drinkable to savor too long.

2010 version. Tasted at 13,4°C. Deep red amber body headed by a golden foam, fine and tight, singing, quickly fading away. Aroma is smokey, malty, a bit sweet, fruity (candied and dried fruit), orange, ginger bread, and tarry souchong indeed. Sourness and bitterness quite present, fruity like sour cherry, hint of cocoa. Absolutely eccentric and complex. Very nice with deli, stilton, and just perfect with a waffle covered with marmelade and chocolate spread.
