Pipkin Brewing Co. Reviews

Pipkin Pale Ale 3.3
12oz bottle (old Notes)-Pours a copperish orange with a decent head. Aroma of hops and malt. Taste of the same. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and goes down easy.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 3.8
Aged 2 years. Pours a brow almost black color with a thin brown head. Aroma was of bourbon, malts, chocolate, and coffee. The flavor is the same with a hint of fruit and a little alcohol warming. Not a huge bourbon fan but this was a decent brew.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 4
Draft at Party Town in Florence, KY. They found three barrels and have on tap. Glad I stopped for this oppurtunity to get a growler full. Black color with medium creamy tan head. Aroma is very complex with roasted coffee, malt and of course bourbon. The flavor was very smooth and creamy with a solid bourbon finish. Full body and a pure but limited pleasure to enjoy.

Pipkin Brown Ale 3.2
Pours with a two-finger light brown head that leaves a good lace. Cloudy amber color. Medium bodied and light carbonation. Slightly malty nose. Starts sweet finishes mellow and not dry. Tastes like a normal brown!! The brewery closed in 2001 and when I realized I got an old bottle I figured it would be right up there with skunk piss. On sale for $1.00 for a 12oz. bottle from Liquor Barn, Lexington, KY.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 4
As once sung "We may never pass this way again", Pipkin gone - Bourbon Barrel Stout not forgotten. Believe it or not this beer was one of my reasons for trying so hard to make it to the RB gather(meeting other RB'ers being the another reason). Not dissapointed at all. The bourbon flavor is in the forefront and that is a flavor I've always liked, but the alcohol that usually goes with it I can do without. Not in this case. Beneath the alcohol flavor is the coffee roast flavors that a stout usually carries, this one is no exception. Finish has somewhat of a sweet flavor mixed with bourbon. I really enjoyed this one, can you tell? Thanks MRomero548 & cheers to you!

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 3
Very dark brown, no head. Vanilla, bourbon, and a little wood in the aroma, flowing into chewy, raisiny malt. Sweet raisin and plum notes in the palate. Slightly wet body, with a little background roast.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 3.3
(RBSG2003): Flat cola body. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, sweet. Taste is medium sweet, bourbon, vanilla, slight astringency. Nice burn at finish. Watery body, minimal carbonation.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 3.6
RateBeer Summer 2003: Black without much head. Bourbon/vanilla aroma, fairly sweet. A bit thin, but that improves as it warms up. Seems a little weak for the style.

Pipkin Pale Ale 2.7
Copper color with a small white head. Hop aroma. Flavor is bitter and hoppy, but not in a good way. This looks to be an old bottle, but the year was not marked.(Choice of 97,98,99)

Pipkin Porter 4.4
Translucent dark brown with a ring of white bubbles. HUGE molasses aroma backed by milk choc., with a touch of cocoa and dark choc., some toast as well. Also a serious load of lighter malts, cake, and caramel. Slight sweet with an almost bitter finish. Awsome porter!

Pipkin Porter 3.9
Bottled, thanks hopsrus!!
Black as tar. Asphalt aroma, the way it smells when the first drops of rain falls on hot, dusty asphalt. Very dry, yet velvetty smooth. Lighlty roasty and with notes of salty licorice in the finish. Balanced bitterness.

Pipkin Pale Ale 3.5
Maltier and a bit fuller bodied than what I'm used to in an american pale ale. More english style, I think. Very good, nonetheless, with a pleasant pale malt character and a good hop presence.

Pipkin Blonde Ale 3.3
Really nice for a blonde ale, and keeps pretty well, as the bottle I had was at least a year old and still tasted fine.

Pipkin Porter 3.9
This is an excellent porter. After I finished it I found out Pipkin was sold and the bottle I drank was made in early 2000, which is disappointing.

Pipkin Porter 3.6
Kick ass porter. Deep brownish red color, great roasted aroma. Tastes include roasted malts, mocha and coffee, and a bit of something like tobacco (?!) One of the better porters Iííve had in a while.

Pipkin Brown Ale 3.3
Hits the spot. Malts are nice and sweet, slight hop presence, and good, rounded body. A great drink if you can still find it.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 4.3

Pours nicely, decent head does form after a bit of aggressive pouring, but fades almost completely, leaving a cluster of large bubbles. Itís as black and as opaque as other stout than an imperial should be.
The Aroma is mostly bourbon and chocolate malt with the bourbon being slightly dominate. The interplay between the malt and the bourbon gives the impression of vanilla, plums and hardwoods.
The flavor is less brash whiskey, but itís still there. It still is a heavy influence in perceived tastes giving the chocolate maltiness woody, fruity and vanilla characters. It also seems to give the beer a slight hint of cola flavor.
Still, I would think upping the malt presence to balance out the whiskey aromas and make a fuller body to the flavor would be nice. Bringing in some of the other darker malt flavors to give the soft, mellow chocolate a little backbone would also be nice. Despite this shortcoming, this is an impressive stout with wonderful complexity and earthiness.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 3.9
Pitch black, small head. My bottle had a slight flavor of bourbon. Not overpowering as some have said and not as much as I expected. Overall, a unique stout that I hope sticks around with the new brewers.

Pipkin Blonde Ale 3.6
This beer rocks. If you like other blond ales that I have rated highly, you will probably like this one as well. Very, very good beer.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 4.4
I like whiskey, so this stout gets a high rating. Overwhelming smell of rye bread in the glass. Smooth for a stout. Complex tastes that only a whiskey drinker can truly appreciate.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 2.8
A lot of bourbon, not much stout. The bourbon overpowers just about everything for me. Tons of bourbon aroma. Fairly large bourbon flavor. Very smooth. I donít get much of the roastiness Iíd expect in a stout.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 2.5
Funky aroma of lots of squah and carrots, vanilla, coffee, flavor is much better but Iím also getting a little pencil eraser. Bad bottle?

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 3.7
I tried to be objective as possible while writing this review. I have sampled other brews that were aged in bourbon barrels, and (although I am not a huge fan of bourbon) I enjoyed them. Bourbon aroma predominates the nose of this beer ... enough so that I almost did the bunny-faced nose squinching twinge when smelling this beer ... similar face is created when confronted with a shot of whiskey. The bouron character is noticable in the flavor but does not overwhelm as it does in the aroma. This beer warms all the way down. If I were ever trapped in an avalanche, I would want this beer around the St. Bernardís neck.

Pipkin Bourbon Barrel Stout 4.5
Rerate: Pours with an attractive creamy and sticky foam which has very tiny bubbles. Whiskey, dough, butter, very rich chocolate syrup, and rum notes in this most delicious aroma. Somewhat light bodied for a cask aged stout, but who cares. Flavors are so complex, they make up for it. Very creamy, coffee hint, followed by a Coca Cola like sweetness and carbonation with bitter chocolate. Palate is so well balanced between the creaminess and carbonation level. Finishes somewhat dry and bitter. An extremely delicious late-night or dessert beer. I could see this pairng well with a chocolate long-john for some reason....or how about in a cocoa sryrup, fresh off the stove, atop a chunk of vanilla ice cream? The culinary possibilites with this are endless. Italian soda-like topped with whiskey. More brewers need to attempt this style, which is becoming a favorite of mine. John Harvardís does a nice one as well.

Pipkin Pale Ale 3.4
Note: Another "Lost in Space rating" ???!!! Pours a nice clear gold to amber color, nice white head and fair lace. Malt nose, the front is slightly sweet, the top light, the finish is dry, moderately carbonated, slightly acidic, with a nice hop bite.

Pipkin Pale Ale 4.8
This is a great Pale Ale brewed right here on the banks of the Ohio. It opens to a great aroma reminding you of barley waving across the bluegrass. A taste and itís full bodied on the tongue and smoother than the Call To The Post at Churchill Downs. Then the flavor hits you like a run-away coal barge on the Ohio River. It finishes with a hoppy bitterness that reminds you that life is fleeting and we should enjoy it while we can. I should note here that BBC has bought out Pipkin Brewing and they will not be making my favorite ale any longer so I urge you to enjoy it while you can.

For a Blonde ale, I think this is my favorite. Full in flavor and some floral hop notes to boot. A good beer overall.

Pipkin Blonde Ale 3.9
Clean and crisp, quite quaffable. A good summer beer that is not bad this time of year either. Nice nose, malt front and the finish a bit hop dry and fresh.

Pipkin India Pale Ale 4.4
IPAís have moved right up there with stouts and porters as my favorite beer style. This is a hop laden beer, malt at the front, but hops till the bitter end. Excellent beer, not the hoppyest Iíve tried, but quite good and aromatic.
