Old North State IPA
Originally reviewed: 11/13/10. Stopped in here with the family for lunch before we headed to Pilot Mt State Park. I’ve been here in the past and they haven’t had any beer at the time. Used to just have 2 offerings. They now have 4, all of which were on tap. I ordered this one as I am a sucker for IPAs. The bartendress wasn’t sure if this was an American or English style. I labelled it American from the hop profile. Came out a very dark rusty copper color with a thin white head on it. Little retention, but there were many pretty sip rings left after each sip. The nose was pretty basic with some floral tones and a sharp hoppy scent. Decent body on this one. Moderate carbonation. Good depth. Wonderful bitter hops all over this one. Some faint orange sweetness, grass, and more hops. This one is a hop-head beer for sure. Wasn’t sure what to expect from this little place, but if this is any indication of what the rest of their lineup is like, I’ll be back to try the rest. Good beer.

Old North State IPA
Served on draft at the winery. Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized frothy offwhite head. Decent head retention. Aroma of citrus, floral and herbal hops, apricot and pale malts. The taste is very herbal hops with some citrus and something a faint bit catty. Toasted malts and caramel as well. Slight lingering bitterness, low carbonation, medium bodied.

Old North State Pale Ale
On tap at the winery. Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with a large frothy white head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of big citrus hops, herbal notes and something faintly soapy. The taste is citrus and resin hops with a faint malt finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation.

Old North State Pale Ale
On tap at the winery/bistro. Pours a light gold with virtually no head. This looks like it’s going to be pretty light. The aroma is semi sour with blunt barley notes and some fruity sweetness. Basically no hops to speak of in the nose. I was afraid to take a sip after the inital sniff, but was pleasantly surprised and confused. There is obvious wine flavor with very light clean grains and again no hops. My guess is some of the brewing and/or serving equipment also comes in contact with wine and though probably inadvertant, creates an interesting and drinkable final product. They bill this as a pale ale, but is really more like a golden ale.
