Black Panther Stout
Viscous black liquid. Smells like a medicinal potion - heavy on the liquorice and fusel oils. Good, rich mouthfeel - those oils give it body and silky smoothness. Almost creamy. The traditional stout flavours come to the fore - in this case over-roasted coffee with fruity chocolatey overtones. Surprisingly very good.

Another surprising Cambodian stout! Pours thick black with minimal beige head, good lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Taste is as same as complex: roasted malts, coffee, vanilla and chocolate, nutty, medium bodied,medium-low carbonation, hops for a dry finish, alcohol well hidden. Good ale.

Clear golden, medium white head. Sweetish aroma of corn. Flat taste, sweetish for corn, usual commercial malts and some dry hops that rescue it a bit. As usual in South East Asia, cheap beer sold at the correct price.

Typical eastern lager.
Almost no aroma, sweet bready flavour, some yeast, more malt than hop forward.
Appearance is like a typical clear golden coloured lager, so nothing bad about that.
oh well it works good with spicey food and with temperatures above 35° celcius it’s more than welcome.

Many thanks to Martin for bringing this 330ml can back from Cambodia! Grainy neutral nose. The beer starts neutral malty, a bit grainy with a watery body. Easy to drink with a malty body and smooth bitterness in the background. The aftertaste is more bitter than expected, easy to drink with a grainy aftertaste on the tongue.

Better than some but worse than most. As far as stouts go, nothing impressive. However, given that it’s a Cambodian beer....it’s a nice change from the typical, light, tasteless beers

Bottle shared at a tasting at troubles’s place. Thanks mom & dad for this bottle! Black with a nice tan head. Aroma of roast, grains, coffee, some smokiness, and a vegetal note. Bitter and slightly sweetish flavor, with roast, smoke, an acidic note, coffee, and some chocolate notes. Medium-bodied, quite rounded. Surprisingly nice stuff! Wasn’t expecting much, but this is a good, well-made, Foreign Stout.

At fifty cents a pop I couldn’t help but knock back many a can of Angkor - saying that, the bottled version just seems to be a different beer altogether. None the less it produces up a pale, sunny gold with a flash burst of pent up carbobnation before settling almost still. Head, little more than a seashore wash, was just as swift to fade. In the bottle the nose seems doughy and yeasty like leavened, uncooked white bread. From the can the aroma has hints of sour citrus, lemon cordial, wheat ears, cardboard and leafy hops. Highly carbonated from the bottle it is strangely soft and creamy from out the can. Again quite bready but lean from the bottle and very watery. From the can it yields up a similar profile to the nose. Leafy hops, mild bitterness, soft wheat like flavour with a sour side and sweet toasted malt front. Both are thin and strained for flavour but I found the can fresher everywhere I went in Cambodia. Just average SE Asian lager stuff here. Enormous thanks to Nina, who brought a bottle from Cambodia! Shared with ogivlado, Jablanko and pornoguru (mmkay :D). Poured an almost black dark brown body with a small grey/ochre head. Oily aroma, coffee, alcohol, light. Bitterish taste, coffee and herbal hops really. Very well hidden alcohol in the taste (though I’m quite sure there was some glycerol in the background), but it’s remarkably thin and watery for the strength. Makes you doubt it’s 8% really. Far from a stunner, but was great to try it nonetheless.

Last beer I got to try in Cambodia before flying out. Should have stuck with Angkor! Produces a vibrant, orange gold with light effervescence and a tight, white film atop. Aroma of creamed corn and sweaty sock, lemon-scented dish-washing liquid and Clag glue™. Gammy, viscous and teeth rattlingly sweet on the palate. Soapy, chemical backdrop and finish. Nice flavour of grain hidden awkwardly underneath. Hops are awol. Rough one to finish! (33cL, BB 17/10/15,

Picked up at an off-license in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Midnight brown and hazy in the shallows. Creamy ring upon the meniscus is tannish and holds. Aroma is of heavy roasted malts, coffee bean, topsoil, peat and mulch with hints of burnt peanut husk and oak. Massive molasses hit on the palate saw my tongue squirm and squander. Body is medium-light with soft carbonation. Length is rusty nails and a touch of blood tannic. Sends shivers down the spine. Saving grace is aniseed and roasted carob notes that linger long. Alcohol is well masked, also a positive I suppose. A hard one to enjoy. (33cL can, BB 11/08/16, 322, Phnom Penh)

From an off-license in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Produces up a deepest, midnight cola brown. Tannish puff lifts atop but settles to a line upon the meniscus. Nose licks at burnt sugar and caramel, golden syrup and treacle (you could it was dessert-like sweet!) with just a little burnt wood and cocoa. A bit of heat matches the sweet, treacly malts and smoky, burnt sugar notes of the palate. Tasted quite warm (refrigeration an issue) so it was full and viscous in body with a spritz front end. A nice kick of umami hits in hinting at soy sauce and kecap manis. Not much length; has a subtle washing detergent note to be its only flaw. Likeable brew but for location.
