Rivertown Brewing Reviews

Rivertown Divergent 3
From 12 ounce bottle bought as part of mix six pack from Dent Kroger, tasted on February 6, 2016. Medium dark amber hue, sour vinegar/fruit nose, taste like the aroma with fruit somewhat more prominent but flavor isnít all very well balanced. Certainly drinkable but there are better sours out there.

Rivertown Death 3.5
Very dark brown pour. Mildly spicy aroma. Very spicy, with a hint of chocolate. A good example of a good beer that would be great if it were a bit subtler on the spice.

Rivertown Winter Ale 3.5

Rivertown Winter Ale 2.9

Rivertown Autumnal Pumpkin Ale 1.8
Poured into a perfect pint from a bottle. 2.75 A: Lightly hazed medium orange color. One finger of frothy beige head that falls quickly and leaves no lacing. 2.5 S: This may be the weakest beer Iíve ever smelled in terms of its pumpkininess. The actual pumpkin comes through fairly well, but the spices just arenít strong enough. Cinnamon and nutmeg are there, but you really have to focus to tease them out. Aside from that, thereís caramel, molasses, and spring water. 2.5 T: Like the nose, the taste isnít bad, itís just hard to find. Super weak spices, just a hint of molasses, and not enough pumpkin to satisfy even the most sensitive of tasters. The beer itself is weak and near flavorless. Hints of caramel and molasses, but thatís it. 2.5 M: Even the mouthfeel is lacking. Medium body. It feels heavier than it is and lacks creaminess. Carbonation level is fine. 2.0 D: I go hard on the pumpkin beer each year and this one is by far the least exciting one Iíve had in years. Iím bummed I bought a sixer of this but happy that this is the last bottle. ★ 1,079 characters DavoleBomb, Sep 12, 2015

Rivertown Lambic 3.6
Bottle (2011 vintage drank in 2015): Poured a hue golden yellow color lambic with small bubbly head with limited retention. Aroma of light green apple notes with some tart notes and light vinous undertones. Taste is also dominated by tart green apple notes with some vinous notes, light oak and light funky ester with a thin finish. Body is thinner then I was expecting with OK carbonation. Not bad but doesnít have the depth of the top Belgian lambic producer.

Rivertown / Yazoo Oro Agrio 3.5
Bottle. Poured a hazy amber color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate sour fruit and earthy wood aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Medium spice sour flavor with a medium sour finish of moderate duration. This is an average beer for style.

Rivertown Roebling Porter 4

Rivertown / Yazoo Oro Agrio 3.4
750 ml bottle from Cappyís at home. Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have big tequila barrel character, it smells like a Margarita, lime citrus, pale malts, background spicy rye character, funk, acidic, vinegar, a sweet note, there was an odd chemical note that I canít exactly place, not getting the usual Brett character but some funk, I wanted to like this more but it is a strange beer. Interesting label.

Rivertown Roebling Porter 3.3

Rivertown Kriek 3.7
Draft pour on tap at FoBAB 2015 at UIC Forum (Chicago, IL). Pours a hazed over amber hue, a gentle touch of cherryskin color with thick frothy offwhite head atop. Full, good retention and lacing. Aromas show dust, funk and cherryskin. Some middling lactic appeal, yogurt, lemon, tart cherry and mellow oak. Initial is lots of cherry, black cherry and sweet cherries meet some decent lactic appeal. Earthy, tart and tangy. A bit of grapefruit, lemon, lactic appeal. Subtle florals, earth, and oak. Backend is dry, sour and dark fruit driven. A bit punchy at times but also fairly sweet, young at others. Interesting stuff.

Rivertown Triumvirate 3.1
Draft pour on tap at FoBAB 2015 at UIC Forum (Chicago, IL). Pours a murky amber orange hue, dulled and flabby with some loose bubbly offwhite head atop.. A nice layer dies to a small ring, subtle lacing overall. Aromas are a bit twangy, sweet and subtle gin. Carmelized and buttery sweet feel meets vanilla, a subtle growing tart acidity behind it. Initial is a bit more acidic, some sharper sour appeal, lemon and yogurt meet some odd sweet lingering malts, subtle barrel and heat. Backjend is funky, some stone fruit, melon and lingering pineapple. Finish is a touch sticky, sour trail out. A bit of a mess but some solid elements.

Rivertown Bourbon Barrel Sour Pumpkin Ale 3.4
Draft pour on tap at FoBAB 2015 at UIC Forum (Chicago, IL). Pours a deeper brownish carmelized hue, darker middle with some subtle copper glow on the edges and bottom. Frothy beige head atop is bubbly, full enough with solid lacing throughout. Aromas show bourbon, oak, gentle pie spice and some tart appeal. Initial is a bit sweet, pumpkin and caramel meet oak, some warmth, vanilla and spiciness. A bit tart, some cobwebs, still a firm feel on that sweeter base. Some cobwebs, firmer oak and gentle spirit. Coconut, pie spice and caramel. The sourness comes into focus at times and I get it, but overall it seems a little lost at others. Sweet, more in tune with the base. But appropriate jabby tartness. I get it. Its weird. But still seems to hit itís mark.

Rivertown Sage On Saison 3.1
Tallahassee, Fl - Momoís Pizza - on tap. Medium golden pour, no real head. Fruity, hearty aroma hint of date fruitiness. Molasses, gumball sweetness, some yeasty notes, a hint of maple syrup. Not very saison-like. Thick enough mouthfeel.

Aroma of lemon, some cherry, taste is sour, cherry, good one to try. Would drink again.

Rivertown Insurrection 2.7
Super hazy amber coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of malt, biscuits, earth, apples, peaches, alcohol and a bit of funk - interesting. Medium-bodied; Strong rich biscuity malt flavour with a lot of alcohol and only a dash of hops, not too much, but more syrup than anything else. Aftertaste is quite mediocre with the malt coming through, some light fruits, a touch of grass and some very light hops as well. Overall, a decent beer at best - this one seems past itís prime, but with the character, doesnít seem like it ever would have been great. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Luekenís Liqour in Dunedin, Florida on 03-October-2015 for the bargain price of US$5,99 sampled at home in Washington on 22-December-2015.

Rivertown Roebling Porter 2.7
heavy aroma of coffee, roasted malt, and some spices. Ebony in color, super thin white head. Sweet up front....very sweet. Rich chocolate, some notes of vanilla, and some cream soda. Bitterness is dry and coffee-like. Watery mouth feel, not much carbonation. Average.

Rivertown Soulless 3.4
12 oz. bottle from Jungle Jimís International Market, Fairfield, OH. Reddish-brown pour with a quick and bubbly khaki head. Tart aroma of apple cider and light cherry. Pleasantly sour taste of lemon zest and cherry met with damp oak and Earth. Tartness fades rather quickly. A decent sour and certainly better than the ratings would lead you to believe.
Monday, December 14, 2015

Rivertown Triumvirate 3.6

Rivertown Divergent 3.8
Bottle at catch 22 bottle share! Pours a hazy yellow with fluffy white head that dissipates quickly to leave light lace. Aroma and taste of lactic sour, lemon and wheat, clean and easy, very nice in my opinion.

Rivertown Insurrection 3
Bottle alone. Pours a hazy orange with billowing white head. Fluffy. Aroma and taste are disappointing. Its not off-putting but its not strong or noticeable. Its kinda boring. For a double IPA to not have distinct flavor is strange. It is bitter. Maybe some citrus. I dunno. It just is what itvis. Wouldnít be a regular drinker based on this bottle.

Rivertown Kriek 3.6

Rivertown Lambic 3.5
Nice lambic bretta with citrus and some cracker. Hazy, tangy, good balance overall. Bottle shared at a tasting a while back.
Thursday, November 19, 2015

Rivertown Divergent 2.9
Hazy gold, short lived head, lacking effervescence. Aroma is strongly acetic, so is the flavor. Mixes balsamic vinegar with lemon juice and a hint of green apple. Some sugary sweetness rises up but not enough to balance, instead a bit cloying and then thereís a long herbal bitterness at the finish, so, am I really tasting hops? ugh. Or is that a salty mineral-iness? Curious experiment in sour, not a Berliner weisse (not rating to style anyway).
Sunday, November 15, 2015

Rivertown Ojos Negros 4
Pours a golden amber color with barely a head...kinda flat. Aromas are vinous, horseblanket, and maybe a touch of berry. Flavors of vinegar, light berry...sour and funky as hell.

Rivertown Divergent 4
12 oz. bottle from Jungle Jimís International Market, Fairfield, OH. Golden yellow pour with a quick almost white head. Aroma of tart lemons. Taste is pleasantly sour with obvious lemons and an almost salty finish that makes this come off resembling a gose. I donít understand the low ratings on this one, this is done quite well.
Thursday, October 29, 2015

Rivertown Divergent 3.1
Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Clear golden with small white head. Aroma is slightly tart, light body, low carbonation, and no lacing. Taste is slightly tart with hints of lemon. Needs more carbonation, hoped for more.

Rivertown Soulless 2.2
Tasted on 10/26/15 from a capped 12oz bottle purchased at Craft Brewed. Pours clear deep crimson with a thin off-white head that leaves thin lace. The nose is malty dark bread, brown sugar, molasses, and just a light twinge of something funky. The flavor is disjointed sour up front, moving to darkly toasted bread, and just a bit of molasses and brown sugar adding a sweet note. The body is light with very lively carbonation and a long charred, sour finish.

Rivertown Pomegranate Lambic 3.9
Funny to see the large standard deviation in the rates for this. Not surprising - itís very sharp and seems like a take it or leave it type brew. I probably donít know the style well enough to place it (though Iíd like to). Iím on the take it side though. On tap at World of Beer in Brewery District: copper pour, slight off-white ring. aroma of light vinegar, berry. tastes are sharp sour berry, vinegar, grape, lemon, pomegranate, oak, acidic.. nice big sour sipper. - 7.8

Rivertown Pomegranate Lambic 2.4
ahhh on draft at world of beer in Columbus. Strong vinegar. I choked on it, ive never choked on beer. WAY too much slike dollar store vinegar. Well the reason why its not in the 1ís is because the aroma is decent.
Monday, October 05, 2015

Rivertown Lambic 3.7
Bottle share at Tomís house. Poured a somewhat cloudy tan-orange with no head. Aroma is light cheese funk, some popping citrus like lemon and orange, hints of vinegar. The taste is fruity up front with citrus and some peach, acedic acid, light yeast funkiness on the backend. Not terribly in depth. But for a domestic lambic not bad.

Rivertown Barrel Aged Old Sour Cherry Porter 3.1
Poured into a perfect pint. 3.5 A: Dark brown color. One finger of fizzy light brown head. Retention is below average and minimal lacing is left. 3.5 S: Right off the bad you get a big punch of acetic acid. Cherry fruitiness with hints of lactic acid. Roastiness with a dry tostiness. The bourbon doesnít come through very strong, but the oak is a little more prominent. 3.5 T: Again thereís a solid acetic component. Cherry fruits along with some berry notes. The bourbon is a lot easier to detect and thereís also more vanilla. Thereís a bit of harsh astringency and bitterness in here which is probably due to equal parts bourbon, roastiness, and some tannins from the barrel. This lasts well into the aftertaste. Some farm notes with musty basement and dry rotten sweat socks. 3.75 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Good moderate carbonation with a pleasant creaminess to it. Quite nice here. 3.5 D: Itís good enough all around. Worth a try, but it probably wonít blow your mind. ★ 989 characters DavoleBomb, Dec 18, 2013

Rivertown Autumnal Pumpkin Ale 2.8
10/02/2015: Smells like a baked pumpkin pie after it has been chilled in the refrigerator; red orange color; very pumpkiny (too much like pumpkin juice) with a dry cinammon spice in the finish; average body; okay, but just doesnít sit well in my stomach; much prefered the Madtree PumpCan that I decided to have after this one... Bottle at The Southgate House Revival in Newport, KY.
