Michigan Brewing Barley Wine
13th September 2020
Almost certainly the most obscure beer I will drink this year. Part of a trade that was completed some years back, more than five for sure. A brewery sealed bottle, perhaps the only one that got to the UK. Okay, feckin rare then, does it taste any good? A clear amber beer, with a short lived bubbly pale tan head. Smooth palate, slightly soft, still has decent fine carbonation. The bottle opened with a hearty pfffft. Light smooth palate. Smooth light malts, light caramel and cream. Bouncy dried fruits and a little citric peel. Very mild spice on the finish. It's 11 years old and is certainly mellow but showing no signs of oxidisation. Still, if you have one of these, I would not leave it beyond the end of next year. Light and drinkable and well matuted.

Michigan Brewing Celis White
Keg at The Oregon Brewers Festival, Portland, OR on 25/07/2008. I think this was my first beer of the festival that day, but heck, I thought this was a fantastic witbier. Absolutely nailed the body and the aroma was so full and spicy and so much gentle fruitiness in the flavour. I would have absolutely believed that this was a well established Belgian beer.

Really looking forward to this one as I love the style; Can(s) to glass. Aroma - coriander + coriander; unfortunately aroma and taste of coriander overpowered faint notes of citrus and spice. Honestly wasn't that much flavor for the style - disappointed. drinkable though.

Bottle. A- Coriander, mild orange, wheat. A- Gold color, clear liquid, white head. T- Coriander, orange, mild white pepper. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- So very similar to Hoegaarden that it brings back memories of how that beer first got me into craft. Well balanced and even as heartbreaking as it was to know this bottle was 18 months so it still drank pleasantly. Really lovely stuff.

Butternut Vicious Hibiscus
Refrigerated brown bomber from FlandersNed, over four years old, poured into a weizen glass. Clear copper with medium white head. Aroma is esters, medium body, pretty well carbonated. Taste is hibiscus, some berries, and esters. The grapefruit seems to be gone and I expected cardboard, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Michigan Brewing Celis Grand Cru
Originally rated on 1/26/09. A bit of a let down here, it looked, smelled and had the mouthfeel of a traditional lager, with the aroma having faint hints of yeast. The taste was not good, a sweet yeasty start and a bitter and a foul aftertaste. I wont try this one again.

Michigan Brewing Celis Raspberry
From old tasting notes. Brewed in Austin, Texas. Bright Zinfandel pink color. Small bubbly white head. Sweet raspberry fruit aroma. Wonderful tangy raspberry flavor. There is an underlying lambic-like character here and it makes for a delicious and faithful reproduction of the Belgian classic style.

Michigan Brewing Russian Imperial Stout (Bourbon Barrel Aged)
Bottle shared at London tasting, October 2016. Black beer, charred wood, ashes. Bourbon character is moderate in the aroma and the flavor, but I do not think it helps the beer and it probably would have been better without it. Good palate anyway. Some vanila, and oak dryness.

22oz unlabeled bottle acquired in a trade a few years back. Side x Side (regular version & BA version). Poured a black color with a smaller sized off white head. Woody, roast, chocolate, some lighter vanilla, and lighter bourbon. A tad better than the regular version and held up OK.

Michigan Brewing Russian Imperial Stout (Bourbon Barrel Aged)
Bottle split at Islo tasting, thanks to Kenny, 04/10/16. Light black with a moderate tan head. Nose is sweet malts, treacle toffe, candied orange peel, faint hop notes, fruit cake. Taste comprises light oxidised strokes, chocolate, spoce, toffee, chaarr, sweet malts, very subtle barrel tones. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough for the age but I think the barrel affect and flavours in general are well on the wain!

Michigan Brewing Russian Imperial Stout (Bourbon Barrel Aged)
October 2016 - Bottle shared by Kenny at CBC Islington – thanks! This beer is labelled in code so only a chosen few can decipher its true meaning. But I have it on good authority that it’s called "Michigan Russian Imperial Stout Bourbon Barrel Aged", 2009 vintage. Opaque black, dense liquid with no real head. Aroma is syrupy and rich. Lots of dark chocolate, molasses, syrupy coffee. Body is smooth with low carbonation. Taste follows aroma closely – syrupy coffee, chocolate syrup, molasses. Rich stuff. (3.8)

Michigan Brewing Russian Imperial Stout (Bourbon Barrel Aged)
2009 Bottle, big thanks to Kenny. It pours darkest brown with a small tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, vanilla, toffee, rocky road, banana bread and some booze. The taste is smooth, rich, unctuous, boozy, wood, earth, varnish, quite oily, leather, charred notes and some vanilla with a very dry finish. Full body and low carbonation. Carbonation lets this one down a bit. Decent anyhow.

Craft Islington Gathering. Opaque dark brown beer, a few pale tan bubbles. Smooth palate, semi dry, almost no carbonation. Decent dark chocolate and spicy licorice from the dark malts. Fruity bourbon. Bitterish dry finish. Licorice linger. Nice flavours from the old Impy but unfortunately the carbonation has gone.

Draft at MBGSF ’10 from backlog notes . Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, dark chocolate, bourbon, caramel, dark fruit, vanilla, molasses with a hint of coffee, some earthy bitterness to the finish, good body to this. Solid imperial stout that blended the bourbon nicely.

Light sweet wheat aroma with some spices. Looks great but could have more head. Slightly watery, but the essentials are there. Citrus, light spiciness, vanilla, wheat malts. Tastes nice just a bit too mild for me. I really like a flavorful wit beer and this one is just too weak (in flavor). Similar to Hoegaarden, just less pronounced. Nevertheless a nice one.

Bottled January 22nd 2016. Pours a light gold, slightly hazy with plenty of foam. Long lasting foam and good lacing. Cloves coriander yeast in the smell. Taste of the spices I mentioned. Hints of orange zest coming through and everything works well together. Fresher bottles would have been nice. Creamy smooth mouthfeel. Second pour and things get appropriately cloudy. A very impressive beer.

Had this back in the day in Hopdevil pub, one of the first beer pubs in Zagreb, now closed. When Alen from Svijet piva (World of Beer) got it on tap, he invited me for a drink and was praising this beer as one of the best. Murky, almost opaque yellow, medium white head, medium lasting. Citrus, lemon wafer. Bitterish, spicy, sourish, lively, sweet. Drinkable. Very good actually.

Rated from old notes. Taste is yeast and wheat, with a strong clove note and citric undertone. Similar to a Hoegaarden, but with more body and more taste. Very good stuff. Nice to see it is being made again. Re-rated on 11/2017. Draft at Pinthouse Pizza. Sweeter than I remembered. A bit too sweet. Dropped from 3.7 to 3.3

Bottle to glass. Nose is a moderately spicy and earthy herbal aroma. Not exactly inviting. Not getting much coriander. Smells stale. Lightly hazy pale gold with small white head, tight bubbles. Taste is grainy wheat followed by a peppery presence. Seems overly spiced in the flavor. Not good.
