Wormtown Brewing Co. Reviews

ClarkVV
Wormtown SNAFU Rye Wine 2.5
Draught at the brewery, 1/30/16.
Deep magenta-ruby colored beer has a strong mahogany tint to it with moderately-high clarity and a beige head that is well-retained.
Sweet and boozey nose shows rye-like fruitiness, vanilla, caramel and toffee malts and a fair amount of fruitiness from the yeast. Low on the hops with some light citrus and herbal qualities.
Again, like the rauch bock, just too sweet to be able to enjoy it. The malt flavors are definitely there; red fruits, bread and caramel, spicy rye...but it’s heavily sweet and chewy and quite fatiguing. Some dryness breaks on the finish, lightly earthy and crusty bread, but it’s nowhere near enough. Alcohol is apparent, though not rampant, while no flaws are noted.

Wormtown Rauch Bock 2.5
Draught at the brewery, 1/30/16.
Deep auburn-crimson body has a tan element to it, good clarity and a beige head atop with moderate retention.
Smoke in the nose is somewhat salty, lightly ashy and quite fruity, though that’s certainly a combination with the strong maltiness present. Tons of vinous notes with toffee, vanilla and buttercream. A bit of more dry ash/char-like character on the end, but mostly quite powerfully malty and richly smokey.
Heavily sweet in the flavor, with a huge burst of caramel-toffee, heavy melanoidins and toasted malt notes. By the time you feel the smoke, it’s just too much, adding strong, salty flavors, rich campfire and light bacon. Alcohol, more toasted malt and a light ash are the only things attempting to balance and they fail miserably at doing so. Way, way, way too sweet. Nothing wrong with a malty doppelbock, but this doesn’t have the requisite acidity on the finish to balance. Creamy, near-syrupy texture with medium carbonation.

Wormtown Pale for ALS 3.4
Draught at the brewery, 1/30/16, listed as "Ales for ALS" but the abv is the same so I assume it’s the same or similar enough.
Medium copper-golden body has a small but fairly well-retained white head atop. High clarity.
Some stone fruits, light citrus and a touch of pine in the nose signify a pretty straightforward blend of New Zealand and American varietals. Malts provide light honey and biscuit and seem well-attenuated from the nose with no alcohol or flaw.
Great texture, with tight carbonation, a moderately malty mouthfeel and good attenuation. Lush fruits and floral notes combine with lemon and orange while there’s a touch more of a pine bitterness on the finish. Sessionable, but still quite interesting and quite hoppy. No flaws or alcohol noted.

Wormtown Berliner Weiss 2.6
Draught at the brewery, 1/30/16.
Mostly clear, pale white grape juice with a fleeting white head.
Definitely lactic acid but at the same time, lots of cider and vegetal qualities. Very sparse malt behind it consists of crackers, primarily. No alcohol.
Lactic acid, dry cider vinegar and light vegetal notes parallel the nose, with a bit of saltiness, moderate carbonation and zero maltiness nor even much wheat character. No major problems but just so very minimal on any characteristics other than kettle souring and cider.

Wormtown Buddha’s Juice 4
12oz bottle into glass. Bottled 1 26 16, nice. Pours a deep orange Amber with rustic tones. Nice creamy head, light lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, grapefruit peel, orange juice, grass, citrus all over. Taste of grapefruit everywhere, melon, hops, more grass, weed, bready granola, pine, Amber malt tones. This is great. Abv melds nicely, a tart bitterness in the end. Smooth all the way.

Wormtown Buddha’s Juice 4.5
On tap at the brewery. Nice orange color with a quite unique fruity aroma provided by the unusual fruit rind added to the mix. Light, easy drinking, apricot and tangerine flavors, hoppy but not bitter. I was unaware of the ABV when I was drinking it and was quite surprised to find out how strong this one actually is. Definitely a brew in a class by itself. Excellent.

Wormtown Blizzard of ’78 3.9
Bottle. Poured a rich dark brown with a nice sudsy khaki head. Aroma of coffee fills the nose with sweet malts and chocolate. Flavor had tons of coffee, caramel, vanilla, and chocolate. Really nicely done here. Full body with a thinner texture, soft carbonation, and a slightly bitter finish.

Wormtown Bottle Rocket Pale Ale 3.3
Bottle. Poured a pale yellow, mainly clear, and a sudsy white head. Aromas of some citrus, grass, and floral. Flavor followed the nose with a kind of soapy lemon taste, grassy, and flowery. Decent, but nowhere near Be Hoppy level for me. Light body, thin texture, lively carbonation, and smooth easy finish.

Wormtown Bottle Rocket Pale Ale 3.6
Sweet citrus and pine aroma. Hazy golden amber body with a one finger thick head. Straight forward bitterness. Light citrus sweetness in the background. Has a resin like quality too. Closer to an IPA than an APA in my opinion. A decent brew nonetheless.

Wormtown Be Hoppy IPA 3.8
Fruity orange/citrus aroma with some pine resin and caramel. Very, very bitter flavor, with tangerine and pine. A little caramel/apple sweetness in the finish. Pretty good, but the bitterness was a little over the top by my standards (and I love bitter IPAs). I’d recommend this highly to an IPA lover but avoid otherwise.

Sample at Denver Rare Beer Tasting VII on 09/25/2015. The beer is a clear dark orange color with a medium thin off-white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of tart fruit, yeast and malt. Medium body with flavors of funky yeast, fruit and smoked malt. The finish is moderately sour with a cherry aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Wormtown Pumpkin 3.1
Keg pour at NH Brewfest. (This was labeled as "Fresh Patch Pumpkin" but same ABV so I’m going to assume it is the same as previous ratings, though considerably older.) Appearance is golden yellow-orange with mild head and mild lacing. Aroma is cinnamon, allspice dominant, as one might expect. Taste is spices, as nose, but pleasantly restrained--nice for pumpkin beers. Palate is medium bodied with average carbonation. Overall, nothing too surprising or distinctive here but, if you’re looking for a tasty pumpkin beer that won’t whack you over the head, this would be a decent choice.

Wormtown Be Hoppy IPA 3
Keg pour at NH Brewfest. Appearance is nice yellow pour with mild sparkle, trace head with minimal lacing. Aroma is pine and resin hops. Taste is dominant moderate to heavy pine/resin bitterness. Palate is light bodied with thin texture and very bitter finish. Overall, didn’t get the citrus/floral/grapefruit but otherwise as described: "decidedly bitter palate." Bitter hop heads will really like this but not my cup of tea.

Wormtown Bottle Rocket Pale Ale 4
On tap at the Foundry. This is a lighter version of the classic Be Hoppy IPA, known to only a select few central Massachusetts residents as a great brewery with a fine selection of beers. Looks like they have currently completed their expansion and will be able to expand their octopus like grasp on the overcrowded Central Mass beer scene and beyond. There is still hope! Hey, I’m drinking Be Hoppy at the moment, and as good as that is, I prefer the lighter Bottle Rocket. Clear, very well balanced malt and hops, easy drinking.

Wormtown Be Hoppy IPA 3.5
Once upon a time I hunted this beer. That beer is no more and so with this new review I’ve finally come to terms with the evolution of a longtime favorite. I’ve been buying this since the early days of the Be Hoppy bombers. Found each release a touch different, but delicious. Loved the cans... the YELLOW cans! I gave them a few releases with the new brewer and brewery to dial this back in, but they haven’t and presumably won’t as this newer profile has been surprisinly consistent though much less enjoyable. So without further complaint, here’s my review of the new Be Hoppy. This applies to the Black Cans and any and all draft releases and of course the new??? six pack bottles. Don’t even get me started on them reverting to bottles, but small ones, sigh. The aroma is surprisingly malty, with vague hints of caramel malt and very subtle floral/earthy hops. The flavor is similar with some decent bitterness but pretty much zero hop flavor beyond the initial fairly meager grapefruit. The beer feels very thin, lacks any lingering bitterness or flavor in the finish and seems to have parted ways with the layer of well balanced roasted barley. This beer used to be borderline chewy, aromatic and flavorful, but now lacks all three...

Wow. 12 oz bottle. Pours pale as a true IPA should with unfiltered haziness. Perhaps they held back on the crystal Malt? Malt body and hop bitterness nicely balanced. Slightly astringent. Nice floral and citrus nose. A favorite! I will be buying more.

Wormtown Be Hoppy IPA 3.7

sample at mondial de la bière 2015 - mtl. unclear medium dark golden with acreamy off-white cap, good retention and lacing. minty citrus, spicy caramel, sweet toasts, very floral - lavender perhaps; ginger shoots, perfumey sprucey gum, some roasted chilies (!), tingling booze, spices, clean yeast action. light carbonation, medium body - oily and a bit heavy; semi-sweet yet assertive grassy-spicy-piney finish. old-school-ish - almost unique floral and spicy offering.

Wormtown Buddha’s Juice 3.5
(Mondial 2015, again, not sure how long this bottle was kept open) Pours a medium copper with a medium offwhite head that leaves nice lacing. Nose is of caramel, perfume, citrus and grass. Taste is moderately sweet and bitter and loaded with caramel. Both body and carbonation were medium and mouthfeel a little syrupy. Overall a different kind of DIPA, better than their Hopulence to me but still nothing special.

Wormtown Be Hoppy IPA 3.8
(Mondial 2015, sample from a can) Pours a hazy golden with a small white head that leaves good lacing. Nose is hoppy for sure, piny and tropical over a light peppery background (unusual but good). Taste is resinous and moderately (a bit more than that, even) bitter, a litttle alcoholic but hey at least it is not sweet. Body is medium, carbonation moderate and mouthfeel lightly juicy. Overall a nice one and something I would pick up again!

Wormtown Hopulence DIPA 3.4
(Mondial 2015) Pours a clear golden with a thin white head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of caramel and dank hops. Taste is of caramel, fruity and moderately bitter. It is also a little boozy, sadly. Body is medium, carbonation moderate and the alcohol is a bit distracting and not hidden well-enough. Overall a fair DIPA (not sure when that bottle was opened so time might have been a factor here) but their other hoppy (and less alcoholic) offerings are better.

Wormtown Be Hoppy IPA 3.7
16oz can, big thanks to Mike L. for sharing. Canned on 5/13/15. Wow, up front, it smells impressively hoppy! Especially for a 6.5% IPA. Half hazy golden orange color. Thin white head. Some decent loose bits of lace. Big grapefruit citrus, some floral, lemon. Biscuity malt. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft, crisp, lighter carbonation. Mildly slick. Moderate sweet taste. moderate-plus bitter, lightly peppery and spicy. Bit of yeastiness to it to the finish overall. A pretty impressively hoppy IPA.
