The Kernel Pale Ale Galaxy Simcoe Centennial
Pale murky golden and a slim white. Nose is grassy, bready melon and sweet mandarin. Initial taste is a rich dewy bitterness, minerally and spriteful. Carbonation is firm enough and mouthfeel clean and little peppery. Finishes clean enough, minerally and chalky with a linger of soft greasy orange. Keg, Bat.

The Kernel London Sour Barrel Aged
Yields a pale golden color with a very small, fizzy head, shrinking to a minor ring of lacing. Smells of a pungent, funk accompanied, dusty tartness, receiving a powerful freshness from crisp lemon peel. Has a flowery undertone, which blends into old oak and ripe red apples. Has a lively carbonation while the beer maintains a pleasant softness on the tongue with a refreshing clean and light bodied finish. Tastes of a stony mineralic quality adding a nice zing to the soon established aqueous softness, with some lemon rind, old mushroom and wet grass creating a pleasantly tart foundation. Dried apple peel, dusty nutshell and just a hint of cakey, old malts compliment to the sourness. Finishes with its initial aqueous softness, dryer lemon zest and a bit of earth, while remaining its balanced appearance. Great Sour, getting pretty close to a Lambic as for its subtle, balanced yet focussed flavor profile.

The Kernel India Pale Ale Zeus
Aroma is herbal, caramel. Taste is curry, dille, pepper, spice, herbal and caramalt notes. This IPA is rather herbal than fruity. Interesting. Zeus hop = Columbus / Tomahawk. So Kernel should change the hopname on the label to CTZ so the consumer is not confused by intellectual property rights.

Light tropical fruits, mango, passion fruit, tangerine, pale malts. Hazy gold, small, creamy, white head. Light bitter. Intense citrus fruits, zesty tangerine, grain malts, light grain malts, light molasses, slightly sweet and tropical fruits finish. Nice Kernel IPA, yet not quite as flavorful as other examples. Keg at Kings Arms, Bethnal Green.

The Kernel Stout Barrel Aged
Bottle. Nose is red wine, very tart / sour red fruits, chocolate / white chocolate, almond, hint of cherry and vanilla, soft whiskey note, faint malt; whiskey emerges more as it breaths. Taste smoke, leading to rich dark chocolate, undercut by a vinous red wine note, leather and a sour noted from the brett, red berry, plum, then a soft whiskey note in the bitter finish. The brett was hard to detect at first but worked well with the vinous element from the red wine barrel, and the whiskey barrel gave a soft smokey characteristic. Loads going on with this beer, lots of depth and character and I really liked it, without ever really loving it, I suspect others will.

Pours murky Kernel amber (eg dirty peach) with low white head. Aroma of mango, passion fruit, pine, orange and tangerine. Taste is mellow fruit sweet with a light bitter finish. Not as through and through sweet as some of the recent Kernel IPAs have been. Body is light and smooth with soft carbonation.

The Kernel Pale Ale Mandarina Bavaria
One of Kernel’s countless APA and IPA variations, not mentioning the hops used, but since the name refers to both citrus and Germany, I assume this could be a combination of a New World C-hop with an Old World noble hop. Irregular, very dense and creamy, almost snow white, lacing head over a lightly hazy orange blonde beer. Dank aroma of pink grapefruit, orange peel, lime zest, dried mango, biscuit, cigarette tobacco (non-smoked), yellow curry spices, freshly grated ginger, some barbecued chicken, apricot, redcurrant, chamomile, freshly cut sorrel, fresh sour redcurrant somewhere, grass, hemp. Crisp and refreshing onset, lively fruitiness of redcurrant, dried mango, peach and pineapple, restrained sweetishness with a dash of fruit sourishness but all soft and well in balance, minerally carbo (even a little bit overcarbonated), supple and smooth biscuity and very lightly toasted malt body, bitterish with a sweetish core, while the fruity and minerally impressions linger a bit, working its way to an aromatically hoppy finish, yielding retronasal pink grapefruit, pink pepper and tangerine aromas as well as providing a soft, mellow, bit resinous bitterness which matches well with the toasted edge of the malt sweetness which goes down into the throat along with it. I never had a Kernel beer which was anything less than tasty and dignified and this one classifies as such: this is an exemplary APA, even if brewed in London. There is a subtle soft but explicit sweetness to it, pairing extremely well with the fragrant hop bouquet. Lovely little beer, elegant and quenching, like most of these Kernel pale ales - it may be a bit ironic that the term ’pale ale’, which had become completely obsolete in its home country, is now being revived by American style interpretations, but so be it, this is one of those beers I could drink all day on a hot summer day like today. Kernel literally never disappoints, I love this brewery and when I find myself in a shop that sells them, I will never hesitate to grab to take home.

Bottle. Little Leeds Beer House. Fairly murky gold. Kernel swede. Is it back for good? I hope so. Nose is big on the sweet and fruity. Ripe strawberry. Mango. Some toffee malts, with a minty, resinous hop note. Taste is sweet, and piny. Light bitterness. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Finish is sweet, turning fruity, zesty, resinous bitter. Decent, but overall too sweet for my liking.

The Kernel India Pale Ale Chinook Simcoe
330ml bottle at home in Richmond as ’The Kernel India Pale Ale Chinook Simcoe’, 6.8%, about 1 month old. Dirty, hazy orange, highly sparkling, dense creamy head, full lacing. Aroma is black grape, peach, plum, touch of rubber. Fruity, typically, but slightly different to the usual citrus or tropical stuff. Body is fairly light with spritzy carbonation. Taste is grassy Simcoe, pine, quite dry with a woody astringency - feels like it’s coating the mouth, puckering astringency in the finish. Reminds me of some early Kernel work. I like it.

The Kernel India Pale Ale Galaxy Mosaic
My Bottom Line:
Elderflowers, citrus fruit and mango meld for an intensely fruity profile in an otherwise sadly muddled IPA (lots of floating yeast).

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the murky beige. This is beyond cloudy; there is no semblance of a nice colour in here at all.
-The fruitiness almost evokes rubber at times. Or is it durian?
-Bitter resins appear in the back as well.
-The soft prickling of carbonation makes for a streamlined body.
-This is not my favorite Kernel IPA by far, but it remains a nice hop fix when you are in the mood.

Bottle.

Bottle from the brewery and drunk at home. Hazy deep gold colour orange tinges and lasting cream head. Aroma of tropical fruit and grapefruit and tangerine. Lovely fruit flavours in the mouth.
