The Kernel Reviews

Maersk
The Kernel Imperial Brown Stout (Marc de Bourgogne) 3.9
Pitch black with small head. Smells single malt wisky. Full body, lits of alcohol. Tastes wisky, wine and some roast bread. Not bitter. Good balance with the exception of a sour spike on the aftertaste.

The Kernel Pale Ale Mosaic 3.8
BOTTLE 50 CL at 5,2% abv, courtesy of Maersk. Almost clear dark amber, off-white creamy head. Medium intensity aroma of canned mano and peaches, quite dank and a bit catty. The malts are very restrained. The taste is similar, light generic fruity maltiness, even dankier and cattier hops, clean and sharp zesty bitterness in the finish The body is so smooth and devoid of tannins, that it feel a bit watery at first. A very good and well-crafted ale.

The Kernel Pale Ale Cascade Citra Simcoe 3.6
Bottle with the in-laws. Nice pale ale with some great hop aromatics going on. It was tasty and refreshing, but at the end of the day it was just another nice pale with some quality hops in it.

The Kernel Imperial Brown Stout London 1856 3.9
Pours a clear, sunny-amber color, with a huge froth head on top. Smells of wheat entangled orange peel, spiced up by black peppers and coriander. Offers a soothing wet grass quality among toffee malts and a whiff of rock sugar. Has a higher, lively carbonation, although the beer’s overall soft and creamy mouthfeel prevails, while adding a nice refreshment to it. Tastes of bitter cardamom and equally bitter lemon peel accompanied by white orange zest, hay and a rock sugar peak. Unusually refreshing with blood oranges and a note of black peppers together with a soft aqueous quality. Finishes with a world class creaminess, while a perfectly dosed, bubbly carbonation cuts through along with sweeter spices, and a still recognizable bitter counterpart from the beginning. Fantastic beer overall, offers a unique twist while sticking to the style, perfected by its balance and supersmooth mouthfeel.

The Kernel Dry Stout Bramling Cross 3.8
Keg at BD Soho. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The aroma is rich, juicy, sweet ripe blueberry, stewed blackcurrant, fruit cake, roasted malts, chocolate, treacle and salted caramel. The taste is bitter, roasted malts, chocolate, salted caramel, charred wood, light ash, liquorice and pepper with a firmly dry finish. On the lighter side of medium body and has moderate carbonation. Aroma is pretty spectacular. Taste doesn’t quite match up to it, but it drinks Danny easy. Nice.

The Kernel Dry Stout Chinook 3.8
Stout + chinook = tru love.
Almost complete black color with a fine beige head. Ok intensity in the aroma. Medium body and a fine carbonation. Good balance between sweetness and bitterness. Semi dry texture. Chocolate, some roast, mild coffee, pine and a pleasant hoppy touch in the flavor. Flavor last a long time in the back of my mouth. Ahhh one more please.

The Kernel India Pale Ale Citra 3.8
The clue is in the name -- this is a pretty by-the-book IPA brewed exclusively with Citra. The result is tons of orange juice fruit aroma and a soft, gentle hop bite. It’s really tasty and very good, although the single-hop bill made it just a little lacking in complexity.

The Kernel Pale Ale Ella Galaxy 3.7
(Thx!) Sampled draft @ Tilquin English Beer Festival 2016. Very hazy golden, little white head. Nose is very dank hops, rustic, almost some funk, grass, grains, nice. Taste is creamy & milky yeast, bit too yeasty too really shine, dominates the whole a bit still some nice grass, low dank. Only if it were less milky & yeasty. Still pleasant enough, drinks easily.

The Kernel / Jester King Farmhouse Table (2016) 3.8
(Thx!) Sampled draft @ Tilquin English Beer Festival 2016. Brewed with Jester King yeast. Clear golden, little white. Nose is mellow lactic yoghurt, lemon, funk is very low & barely there; taste is low yeast, some juicy hop, lightly mineral, mellow lemon,… medium bodied. Drinks really easily but overall quite neutral, not much going actually, surprised how neutral this is, not bad but definitely expected more & expected more weird things happening. Just a clean, easy neutral easy drinking beer. Served a touch too cold for me.

The Kernel India Pale Ale Citra 4.1
BOTTLE 33 CL at 6,8%, courtesy of Maersk. Hazy dark amber, rich creamy head. Big tropical fruit aroma, peaches, balanced by fresh resins and dankness. The malts are subtle and stay far behind. The taste is neither dry nor sweet - you don’t get the malty taste not the maltose sugars, but it does not feel overly dry either. Rich and fresh hops, grapefruit zest and piney freshness. Pungent zesty bitter finish. Super-smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Pretty much flawless.

The Kernel London Sour Damson 4.3
(Thx!) Sampled draft @ Tilquin English Beer Festival 2016. Massive pink red, very dark & very dark pink head. Nose is massively milky sour, fruit is crazy, red grapes, berries, juicy, cherry, plum. Taste is basic yoghurt sour, common to the other UK sours tried at the festival, on top you get this massive fruit, sour jam, massive plum, cranberry, red grape,… thick yoghurt body. Crazily big fruit profile is the game here, lovely, great drink.

The Kernel Pale Ale Ella Galaxy 4.2
Draft @ Tilquin English Fest ’16, courtesy of and shared with the fine Belgian RB crew.

The Kernel Dry Stout Bramling Cross 3.9
Draft @ Tilquin English Fest ’16, courtesy of and shared with the fine Belgian RB crew.

Draft @ Tilquin English Fest ’16, courtesy of and shared with the fine Belgian RB crew.

The Kernel Dry Stout Mosaic 3.9

Hazy gold beer, good cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and has a nice fine crispness. Thin but silky malts, mildly sweet, Hops are orangey and not that bitter. Nice pine. Touches of lemon and hop spice and a bare whisper of something tropical. Light semi dry finish. Smooth and tasty but not getting the normal Kernel fireworks.

Bottle. Very fizzy pour which takes a good while to settle down. Body is nice and mellow- fitting with the abv although the beer still has a boozy hit. Very pronounced coffee, with tobacco and rich dark fruit. Nice hints of hops coming through. If it wasn’t overcarbonated it’d be killer.

Hazy amber beer, tidy pale cream colour head. Bubbly pale cream colour head. Palate is light, mildly dry and has a nice fine minerally carbonation. Light malts and even lighter sweetness. A floral generic fruit that in my limited experience of Sticklebract, seems to be it’s characteristic. Little candy fruits. Mellow citrus resolving some tangerine. Citric peel. Light semi dry floral finish. Mild l bitter linger. Nice one.

0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’, bottled in October 2015. Pitch black with a thin, soapy, slowly diminishing, light brown head. Roasty and fruity aroma of dark chocolate, hard roasted coffee, citrus and some pine. Really fresh, roasty and fruity aroma of dark chocolate, hard roasted coffee, some licorice, citrus and some pine, followed by a short, moderately roasty-bitter and slightly resiny finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Really good, intense notes of roast, fresh and fruity hops and a decent mouthfeel, especially considering the abv.
