Natian Brewery Reviews

Natian Undun Blonde Ale 3.8
16 oz can poured, purchased at Whole Foods in Portland. Knocked out all 3 cans that are on the market right now. Pours a cloudy darker golden color with a thick foam head. Very nice floral hop aroma. Soft bready malt, floral hops, and a grassy finish. Extremely enjoyable blonde for me. Light, but flavorful. Very refreshing. Solid beer here.

16 oz can poured, purchased at Whole Foods in Portland. Rating from notes. Pours a dark reddish brown with a thin fizz head. Soft roasted malt aroma. Flavor is a much more dominant roasted malt, toasty flavor and finish. Super drinkable CDA. Enjoyed this.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3.6
16 oz can poured. Rating #2002, the same year Oskar Blues began canning their own beer and starting something great. In respect, I choose a canned beer to celebrate. Dark cloudy copper pour with a patchy head. Big earthy malt aroma. Caramel malt flavor, dominating the hops. Lingering caramel. Definitely a winter IPA. I enjoyed this.

Natian CuDA Cascadian Dark Ale 4.6
I am drinking this at home for the first time . It poured perfectly in my Guinness glass, I could have pressed in a clover if I knew how. It would pair well with a Scotch egg, sweet potato fries or just friends and conversation . A darker ale with a smoothness that made me happy. Leaves a nice flavor, not too bitter or thick. Give it a try.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3.1
My Bottom Line:
This Barley Wine-like Double IPA relies on conifers and candied oranges in a rough and tumble mouthfeel.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam sits atop the murky dull red.
-The flavor profile and texture are rather unrefined.
-Green bitterness is not intense, which is fine by me. But it does make the sweetness appear more prominently.
-The soft bubbling also makes the body feel heavier.

Can.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3.6
A reddish brown DIPA with a thick receding light mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with loads of treacle, butterscotch, licorice notes, alcohol warmth and surranated hops. In mouth, a sweet fruity malt with orange pulp, floral hops, grapefruit pulp, licorice notes, alcohol warmth, very nice. 2 year old can. Shared with MartinT.

Can. 16 ounces. Pours a mostly cloudy orange color with a small white head. A light fruity nose, dusty caramel. Odd one, caramel, oxidation, apricots. I really get a lot of oxidized malts, hmm. I actually enjoy those flavors generally.

Natian CuDA Cascadian Dark Ale 3.9
Had on tap at Barrel and Keg in Salem Oregon with my brother B5. Color is an interesting light reddish brown yet opaque. The hops is present with a citrusy twist, well balanced with solid toasty biscuit malts. Decent off white head that stays as a thin top layer. A good example of CDA. 9.0 BD

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3.2
Brackish brown, with no head. Aroma is sweet and oxidized malt, with an orange liqueur note. Tastes sorta the same, but not much about this is quite right. There are some burnt caramel notes into the finish, but overall, this tastes like an inexperienced homebrew IIPA. $3/16oz

Draft. Aroma of chalky cocoa, which is exactly how it tastes. Dies on the palate a bit. A one-note, but a good one-note.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3.6
Can. Roasty, sweet fruit nose, with some vanilla and light piney hop. Dark amber brown color, substantial fluffy off-white head. Very malty initial, dark caramel sweetness, grass, herbal notes. Very pleasant flavor changes with the hopping in mid and final. Medium-heavy body, creamy. Pretty nice.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3.2
This had some odd sweetness to it (that I’d guess is from the rum chips but it was too subtle to pick that out). Aroma is nice and piney with some soft carmel and citrus. Flavor much the same but too many things compete for your attention. OK.

Natian Undun Blonde Ale 3
good for a blonde ale (which are mostly quite boring even for session type beers) but the floral hop quality especially in the nose, mixes well with the lightly sweet malt to produce a pleasant aroma and taste. Simple, but nice.

A decent balance of pine needles and lightly roasted malt and chocolate. I’ve had better, but had far worse. This was nice, just didn’t stand out.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3
Will start with it grew on me onna counta my daughter went out of her way to provide it. Over carbonated for certain. Infested? Possibly, but will say that I do most often persevere unless I v=cannot tolerate something, and I f I I I honestly tried. I did not much care for this even though I did not hate it in the end.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 2.4
16oz tall boy from Spirits Point Boro. Poured all beige head, with ample settling a nice hazy honey brown body appears. Aroma of oranges, wort, caramel, toffee and orange marmalade topped toast. Palate is so fizzy its practically undrinkable. Flavor of older oranges, old bread, medium toast, caramel malts. Meh undrinkable because of the ridiculous carbonation.

Natian CuDA Cascadian Dark Ale 3
16oz tallboy from Spirits Boro. Poured a huge beige foamy head with a dark blackish brown body. Aroma/flavor of overly sweet chocolate, some citrus, darker toast, wet pine needles, dry grass. Body is over carbonated but not as bad as Old Grogham or whatever the other one was. Meh, a bit too bubbly and sweet.

Interesting beer. Pours a cloudy brown color with a small white head. A big fruity and toffee nose. The flavor is mostly chocolate and orange, something akin to a candy, light pine, medium bitterness. A bit odd, but good.

I guess I missed this at the Holiday Ale Fest! Anyway, on tap at Baileys. Pours a pure black color with a small beige head. The aroma is sweet tropical fruit, big roast and huge coffee. This is a pretty big coffee beer, but clear coconut, juicy, burnt wood. Very good beer.

16oz can picked up at the Portland Airport on my way home after a weekend of mass ratings
A huge gusher when I opened the can. Pours hazy golden with a big frothy white head and lots of sticky lacing. Aroma is huge floral, wheat, peppers and honey. Flavor malty, grassy, yeast, spicey with a bitter lemon zest finish
A decent blonde, this would taste great on a hot day.

Can at Percy Street BBQ, Philly, 29/11/13. Mid black with a big ole frothy tan head of bubbleage. Nose is bitter hopsm light pine, light roast, hint of tropicals with grapefruit prominent, metallic nip. Taste comprises earthy dank hops, mineral bite, light cocoa dusting, bitter grapefruit, pine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finale with a little grassy hop bitterness. Decent enough CDA.

Natian CuDA Cascadian Dark Ale 3.4
FROM NOTES: July 29, ’12 Poured from a bottle into a tulip. A: Nose is roast forward, some citrus and caramel. A: Clear dark brown body, one-finger head and not much lacing. T: roasty with a wee bit of chocolate, got more bitter on back end as it warmed, piney, balanced citrus sweetness. P: on the light side of medium, a bit sticky. O: Better than some CDAs, but a long way’s from the plethora of this emerging style, too malty, not enough hops.

On the train from Hereford to Inverness, can liberated from OR thanks to Wingman Willis, 18/10/13. Hazed orange amber with good sized off white headage. Nose is toasty malts, citrus fruit, bitter orange, grass, earthy hops. Taste comprises orange sherbet, earthy hops, orange pith, caramel malts. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in the finish. Drinkable but pretty low end for the style.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3.1
16 oz can from New Seasons - Pours a hazy brown with a white head. Not much hops aroma at all for an imperial IPA. More of a bready malt aroma with a hint of vanilla. Tastes move like a high alcohol amber than an imperial IPA to me. OK beer. Not my favorite, but I’ll certainly finish this one.

Natian CuDA Cascadian Dark Ale 3.2
Can:   Deep deep brown, moderate frothy beige head, so-so lacing.   Strong piney nose, backside has some soft roasted malts with just a touch of cow pasture.   Thankfully that cow pasture isnt overly powerful.   Bitter hops, burnt malts, and soy on the tongue.   Comes across as a bit acrid, without being ashy or roasty.   Has more bitterness to do with something other than hops.   Hard to describe I guess.   Assertive Pine, almost like the cleaner... a touch medicinal.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with some roasted malts, pine, and acrid bitterness... almost like charred grain husks.   Its okay, but wouldn’t reach for it again.

A very decent CDA, and a pleasent addition to the style, dark roast notes in the body with hints of chocolate, piney hop profile is a little off, definitely on the porter side of CDA.

Natian Old Grogham Imperial IPA 3
Hazy, deep dark brown and ruby-tinted body with a bronze glow and a thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of strong alcohol, pine, hops, caramel, grass and resin - pungent and very strong for sure. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep caramelised sugar flavour with a lot of earthy and pungent malt and metallic notes with a big bite at the end and a lot of deep flavours to roam through. Aftertaste shows a lot of earthy malt, yeast, metal, oak, herbs and resinous hop flavours - strong, but not all in a good way. Overall, a rather deep and strong beer without a good sense of style nor complexity. Nice to try, but I wouldn’t get this again even if I could find it regularly. I sampled this 50 cL can purchased from Whole Foods in Portland (Pearl), Oregon on 11-April-2013 for US$3.49 sampled at home in Washington on 03-June-2013.

Natian CuDA Cascadian Dark Ale 3.5
Deep dark brown coloured body with a bit of a muddy brown glow and a ridiculous, eight centimetre tall soapy brown head - not very nice. Aroma of slightly toasted malt, hop pellets, resin, grapefruit and a hint of earth. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt flavour up front with a bit of an earthy and metallic twang, some pungent hop flavours showing grapefruit and floral notes and a decently strong finish showing mostly alcohol and some malt. Aftertaste shows some good balance with the hops noticeable along with the roasted malt and a lot of bready yeast flavours. Overall, a decent beer - nothing great, but a good drink and passable for a beer from Oregon, which is to say, nice to sample. I sampled this sixteen ounce can purchased from Whole Foods (Pearl) in Portland, Oregon on 11-April-2013 for US$3.49 sampled at home in Washington on 07-May-2013.

On draught at Buckman-Kerns Brewfest at EastBurn. Deep black color. Aroma is dark roasted malts, almost too roasted. A lot of toasty, roasty malt notes in the flavor with a smidgen of hop. Almost tastes like a smoked beer.

Draught. Their Elephante with more hops, floral hop aroma, like an IPA. Red colour with a white head, moderate lacing. Flavour rather like an IPA but more malt character. Hoppish finish.

Natian Undun Blonde Ale 3.2
Everything about the beer reminds my of a California Common or Steam Beer. Pours out of the can a hazy yellow with a puffy white head. Smells of yeast, grassy hops, and slightly floral. That flavors are zippy with a good hop presence. A nice summer ale.
