Biwako Iimichi Strong
Bottle from highway rest area souvenir shop (along the Kosei Road flanking Lake Biwa). Some thin dark fruit aroma, light roast malt. Clear dark brown tea color, and no head to speak of. Flavors of rough caramel, dark fruit, a bit of overripeness. Metallic notes from mid palate onward. Flavors go dead quickly. Underattenuated. Thin body, with almost no carbonation. Pretty bad.

Biwako Iimichi IPA
Tap at Craft Beer Live 2017. Geez! A stupidly stinky nose of sulfur backed by spritzy citrus. Hazy pale straw color. Light watered-down maltiness that mercifully floats away quckly. Seems to be made with extract of some sort. And also possibly infected. Thin, watery body. This is an unpleasant powdered malt/citrus drink -- not an IPA.

Biwako Iimichi IPA
Tap at Craft Beer Live Osaka 2017. Reasonably looking golden orange color. Nose of farts, sulphur, rotten eggs, and some citrus and mango. Gag reflex initiated. Rotten ass vile lactic infection os some sort so that it tastes like a fart wrapped in rotten milk. Disgusting. Buy some soap and clean your brewery. Almost made me puke.

Giving these guys a shot again I was served a beer that was An opaque gold with a sweet eggy grainy aroma but nicer than I expected. Light bodied with a scratchy mouthfeel. The taste is sickly sweet and somewhat Artificial sugar like but grainy light malts. Not obviously off so I think they’ve improved a bit. Sweet tangy and sharp is my overall takeaway, ok but not terribly kolsch like.

Biwako Iimichi Stout
On tap at Craft Beer Live Namba 2014. Seems like a rare release. A dark reddish brown pour with an ok beige foamy head. More of a brown porter than a stout. 5% very tangy aroma, with sweat socks and dark malts - not too appetizing. Decent med-light palate but a touch watery. The taste is tangy-sour, no real dark malt quality to it. Not sure what they were trying to do but it is a total fail. Not undrinkable but way way off-style. The worst beer of the day... totally off-style. The closest to a dark beer would be a brown porter but even then it is WAY messed up, bleh.

Bottles. Cloudy reddish brown with not much of a head, cloudy. lightly fruity and estery nose, caramel, some veggies. Not so appetizing. Caramel and fruit flavors, green apples. Basically flat and oily palate. Not very good. Very amateurish.

Shigaraki Kogen Hototogisu Beer
Another beer brewed by Nanakai Brewery under a different name, this time Shigaraki Kougen. Bottled on March 27th so just under a week old, this was a birthday gift from my friend Mick. It was funny as I was actually gonna go to their beer restaurant Sugakura last week but after calling to see if they were open I was told they were closed and only seem to be open when someone makes a reservation... anyways, on to this Asamiya-cha tea beer. It pours a deep gold with a fat foamy head. The nose is malty, earthy, tea-fairly nice. Medium bodied the taste on this is malty, earthy & sour. It has a fairly rough taste but not completely terrible the only ratebeer review I saw had me expecting something worse. He must have had old or messed up batch. The only surprise was that sourness right of the bat then it goes malty then earthy with just a hint of that tea character near the finish/aftertaste. Then again I have no idea what Asami-cha tastes like. I'd say this is ok & comparable to their other beer I've had. In other words mediocre verging on ok. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Biwako Iimichi Strong
Bottle, 578 yen, bought in Kusatsu Kintetstu Department store under the name Kusatsu no Yado, it seems to be sold under that brand for a liquor store in Kusatsu but is elsewhere known as Biwako Iimichi Strong. That is the brewery’s most famous brand but it is actually called the Nanakai Brewery apparently. See Gee Beer for a nice write up on them: http://www.gee-beer.blogspot.jp/search/label/Shiga This altbier pours a clear hazelnut brown with a light beige head that is thin & leaves behind no lacing. The aroma is sweet malts, predominantly caramel with some toffee & nutty qualities as well. Maybe a dash of butterscotch? Medium bodied with a slick mouthfeel. The taste is surprisingly bitter with some harshness, then a grainy caramel. It feels like it almost has a chemical note to it, possibly the malts were mistreated at some point. As this bottle is just 12 days old (bottled February 14th) I’d have to say they might have some production issues. It is my first beer from them and as I go through it the sweetness increases, I get some nuttiness and the caramel in the finish which builds on itself becoming a more pleasurable drinking experience. Yet another average japanese altbier, ok & worth the tick I suppose. I’ll make a trip to their brewpub sometime to try their other beers...

Shigaraki Kogen Hototogisu Beer
How this can be called a beer is beyond my knowledge. Do not seek this one out it is horrid beyond all beverages. Foul mint, sludge and wheat smell. Like a malt liquor. Very carbonated like a Coke. Taste of rubbing alcohol with a stong bitter chemical taste. Grass. Leaves a dry aweful aftertaste tat needed to stop asap.

Draught at Craft Beer Live, Namba May 23, 2010. Dark golden, a rather faint, but really tangy, fruity aroma with some peach. A nice sour edge, tangy, fruity, with a decent bitterness. It’s all right. Not a kolsch by any stretch of the imagination. Has an interesting sour edge which I am not sure was meant to be there, but it works.
