Moerlein Harvest Lager 3
Draft sample at Dewey’s from notes. Pours a clear dark golden amber color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have toasted bread, grass, hints of herbal notes, a general lager character, not much for me to get excited about other than it being a local tick.

On tap at festival
Finishing out the festival by making the round one last time I stopped by Moerlein’s booth to see what they hauled up to Cleveland. Among the drafts was a big beer that was possibly the highlight of the festival. If time had permitted I would have loved to try a few more pours.

Aroma / Appearance - A deep chestnut base soaks up the warm light as the icy legs crawl downwards. Brandy, apples, malt, and dense sticky highlights of fresh cider float upwards with ease.

Flavor / Palate - Apples, pear, and other sweet fruits blossom on the tongue. The transition explodes with warmth as the full brunt of the 11% ABV hits the senses. The smooth mellow finish takes off the edge as it caps a well executed barrel treatment. Hopefully this gets a bit more buzz from the locals before it goes away.

Moerlein Plum Street Wheat 3.4
Super cloudy blond with a fine bubbled head. This is sort off an odd bird. It’s tart and a bit fruity and the whole thing comes off artificial in a vague way. It’s actually pretty drinkable with a pleasant thickness and hearty carbonation.

Moerlein Purity Pils 2.9
This has an unfortunate metallic note but it’s otherwise really good. It’s crystal clear and golden. It has a herbal noble hop quality and some breakfast cereal malt. There is just a hint of sweetness to balance solid earthy bitterness in the finish. Really close to great aside from that off note.

12oz bottle - to be honest, the color scares me as does the smell. did someone barf in this? really thought twice about trying this but I really doubt someone actually barfed in this. Cardboard, light indiscernible fruit flavor and general wheat suggestion. this is terrible. drain pour.

Draft at Dewey’s in Anderson, served in a pint glass. Pours a clear copper gold with a finger of frothy off-white head that settles unevenly and leaves some trailing lace. Notes of toast, dry leaves, brown sugar, dry grass and straw, and nuts. Light-medium bodied, with moderate to medium carbonation and a malty, toasty, earthy mouthfeel. Good lager.

can @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear medium amber, ivory head that drops to the rim, strips of lace. Taste is malt that hits the swallow with big carbonation, then immediately to crisp, overpowering hops that leave no room for anything else. Strong, big-bodied, but mostly one-trick.

Moerlein Emancipator Doppelbock With Coffee 3.5
22 oz. bottle from Arnold’s, opened at home. First bottle release at Arnold’s, as far as I’m aware. This was bottle 21 of 300, hand signed by the brewer. It pours a clear burnt orange color with a very small off-white head that quickly settles into a ring. The aroma doesn’t have a ton of depth, but adds a nice mild coffee roast atop toasted and sweet and chocolate malts from the base bock. The flavor is pretty limited - those same malts, sure, but very subtle coffee, with dried leaves and a hint of fruit. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a thin, toasty mouthfeel. Not bad, but could be better.

Aroma of toasted and caramel malts, brown sugar, dry leaves and grass, and a hint of spice and nuts. Flavor of dry leaves and grass, caramel, brown sugar, mild spice, earth, and lighter toast. Light-medium bodied, with moderate to medium carbonation and an earthy, slightly sweet mouthfeel. Not bad.

Moerlein Twelve/163 3.6
Draft to taster at Ei8ht Ball during Danny’s birthday keg bash. Pours a hazy amber brown color with a small off white head. The aroma has some sweet malts and light fruit, but echo Peter in that it took some work to get much of anything. The flavor has sweet malts, caramel, fruit, boozy alcohol that might need some time to calm down, brandy barrel, wood, very light spice, I will revisit this over time.

Moerlein Wild Hunt Black IPA 3
on tap @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Aroma of malt and ginger. Opaque dark brown color, beige rim head, thin lace bands. Taste is malt and ginger that is big and chewy as it passes minimal fizz on the swallow. moving from there to light licorice and mild hops for a smooth silky finish. I’m a little puzzled by the lack of carbonation, and by the obvious ginger (that other reviewers don’t mention). Good overall, but not at all great.

Draft at the Malt House, served in a flight. Pours a cloudy burnt orange with a small off-white head that settles into a ring. Darker than the 12/163 and maybe not as hazy. This must be the base, though. Notes of toasted malts, brown sugar, leaves, peanuts, figs, dried apricots, raisins, banana, and earth. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, estery, malty, and fruity mouthfeel. More consistent throughout than the 12/163, but also lacks the extra dimension to smooth it out.

Draft at the Malt House, served in a flight. Pours a hazy dull amber color, turbid, with a small off-white ring for a head. The aroma is damp and fairly nondeScript. The flavor has notes of vanilla, caramel, banana, raisins, dates, brown sugar, earth, cream, and oak. Medium-bodied, with low to moderate carbonation and a sweet, muddled mouthfeel. It’s good, but doesn’t showcase the brandy barrel particularly well, nor the specific notes of the base quad.

Moerlein Bay Of Bengal 3.2
12 ounce can
If you have tried any Moerlein beers before then you know what to expect with this release. It gets the job done but misses out on some of the nuances of the target style. While it won’t stop me from picking up more singles when I pass through the area I wouldn’t rush out to grab a six pack if it migrated north.

Aroma / Appearance - Deep rusty brown liquid filters downwards as it builds an ivory shelter. Soft and gentle, it softens the surrounding light. Pineapples, mango, and hints of stray trash mix the good and the bad.

Flavor / Palate - Malted pineapples warm the mouth as the chewy mouthfeel explores the edges of the mouth. Brownies soaked in honey blend with pine cone shavings. The bitter finish offers the bite that you’d expect from an imperial IPA but isn’t aggressive enough to bite your head off. Much like the local football team it shows flashes of brilliance from time to time but the long term outlook is just above average.

On tap @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Aroma of rich malt and coffee. Clear brown/ black color, two-finger tan head, lace cobwebs. Taste is rich, silky smooth malt with a little black coffee thrown in for good measure. Moerlein Big Piney IPA 3.3
12oz can, picked up for $2.00 from Marty’s Hops & Vine last week. Coded CMB 6012. Darker amber color, made completely hazy with lots of fine particles in the body. Bigger off-white kind of airy head. Leaves decent frothy bubbly lace. Malty, toasty, caramelly is the first impression. Kind of musty, with some bigger piney, peppery hops. A lot of malt too though, touch of chocolate. Medium to bigger body. Kind of slick. Lighter to moderate, kind of soft carbonation. Bigger bitter taste initially, but it quickly subsides and a bigger sweet taste takes over. The malt character is bigger here (esp. towards the second half), though kind of interesting. My Subway helps cuts through the it a bit, but without food this would bother me. Actually it kind of gets more noticeable as I go, and starts to overtake the piney hop that I liked (went from 3.5 to 3.3). Interesting beer, but I wouldn’t want a 2nd.

Moerlein T-Bird Fresh Hop Harvest Ale 3.4
12 ounce bottle or can
An average Moerlein’s release demonstrates their ability to get the style right without too much fanfare. A bit like a West Coast person transplanted to the Midwest, this beer brings a bit of California to the shores of the Ohio River. Throw in a little local flair and the results make you feel like your money was not wasted.

Aroma / Appearance - A caramel bronze body glimmers with life under a veil of fresh white head. Mangoes, grapefruit, and fresh hops give the winter air a feel of springtime. Grassy undertones bind it all together.

Flavor / Palate - Light bitter grapefruit, mango, and peach scour the tongue clean of any prior tastes. The slow building bitter hoppiness crescendos near the final sip. A respectable harvest ale might not extreme enough to stand up to the best IPAs yet it still manages to stay true to the spirit of southern Ohio’s brewing scene.

Moerlein Business Courier Lager 3.6
Draft at the Lager House, served in a "16 oz." glass. Pours a barely cloudy orange-gold with a finger of eggshell white head that settles into a ring. Very nice toasty malt profile here - biscuity and sweet, but really toasty - with some straw, a faint grassy hop, and not a whole lot else, which is fine. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a malty, toasty mouthfeel. Really nice Vienna. This went down quickly and easily.

Draft at the Lager House, served in a flight. Pours a deep brown color with amber highlights around the edges and a small dark tan head that settles into a ring and faint film while lacing the glass. Citrus, dark chocolate, earth, tobacco, tropical fruits, and bubblegum. Has a late spice kick, as well. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, bitter, uneven mouthfeel and a dry finish and aftertaste. Kind of a weird example of the style; I’d think they’d be a little more straightforward if doing a batch with brewing students.

Draft at the Lager House, served in a flight. Pours a super hazy tropical fruit juice color with a small eggshell colored head that laces the glass while settling into a ring. Notes of plum, wheat, sourdough, straw, and blueberry cobbler. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a dry, fruity, almost tart mouthfeel. This one didn’t do a whole lot for me. On tap at MadTree Winter Bonanza. Moerlein recently released 2 other black IPAs. I’m not exactly sure how this one differs, but they all definitely have different names.. This beer kicked right as I approached the tap, so initially my pint was just a cup of foam. It settled into a half-pint of liquid, though. Dark brown color, kind of clear around the edges. Good khaki head, leaves good swaths of lace. Nice earthy hop, mild piney. Moderate roast, hint of coffee. Light carbonation. Mild slick. Decent chewiness. Moderate-plus sweet taste, light bitter. This one’s pretty decent, and I’m happy with it.
