Christian Moerlein Brewing Company Reviews

Felsenbrau
2.8
Moerlein Over-The-Rhine (OTR) Ale
Bottle (variety pack). Pours hazy amber. Thick light amber head, long lasting, with much lacing. Aroma faintly of bread, citrus, and strangely a very slight hint of fresh dog poop? (I’ve not encounter that one before!) Taste slightly bitter, becoming more bitter over time, some orange and grapefruit, finishes more bitter. Not too bad, but probably wouldn’t buy again.

Moerlein Plum Street Wheat
Bottle (variety pack). Pours whitish with ting of greyish-purple. Very over-carbonated, first bit poured filled the glass with purplish-white foam which took minutes to dissipate. Very little aroma, slightly fruity. Tastes weakly of plum, not much else. Very disappointing, would not buy again.

Moerlein Wild Hunt Black IPA
22 oz. bottle, thanks to Chalumeaux. Aroma is large amounts of pine, mild chocolate, resin.

Flavor has weak dry roast, hints of chocolate with a long lingering pine resin finish. Body is about medium with a dry texture. Pretty much exactly as you would expect from the style. Unlike ClarkVV, I like that Greg Noonan created the style. Tasty to me.

Moerlein Wild Hunt Black IPA
Bomber from TJ, undated, drunk 7/24/16.
Dark mahogany body is clear with a small, beige head showing low retention.
Smells like a c-hop and dark malt beer....what is up with this god damned style. Hmmm, how can we disrupt the hoppiness and add a bunch of specialty malt character to our hoppy beer? Screw you, Greg Noonan.

Moerlein Plum Street Wheat
I got this in a variety pack of Moerlein beers, the rest ranged from pretty good to wonderful. This one, well, I can’t finish it. Everything about is weird. Whitish pale purple color, vaguely fruity flavor but with something... paper? It is VERY over carbonated. So badly that it foams in my mouth when I try to drink it, and it fills the whole glass with foam when I pour just a little in the bottom. Too bad.

Moerlein Third Wave IPA
Cooked hop aroma, dull malts, generic beer smell; odd amber color, thin beige crown; earthy and herbalish hops, mild bitterness that grows in the finish, medium body, average mouthfeel; messy and muddled, not good or well crafted, nearly as bad as the Moerlein FCC Blood Orange IPA... Draught at Taft Theatre.

APPEARANCE- carmel color, not much head (but poured at a concert). NOSE- tropical fruit, probably mosic. FLAVOR- somewhat bitter, but not balanced. NOTES- kind of what I expect for Moerleine. Mediocre to the core.

Moerlein Big Piney IPA
Maybe overlooked this one until it was a bit too late. Bottom of can printed "SAMSQUANCH CMB6012".
Deep honey caramel pour, lasting head.
Nose of toasted caramelized malt, delicate floral notes.
Flavor malt-dense, honey and molasses, pine needles and bark, peachy sweetness, definitely and old IPA, but not offensive. Syrupy, medium bodied, nice for those who enjoy malt-heavy brews.

Moerlein Barbarossa Double Dark Lager
This brew is a dark brownish-amber color with a medium light beige head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and dark fruit. Light-bodied with a sweet caramel malt character, with a bit of fruit and floral hops in the background. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Bottle. Sour milk, plum, malt, and straw aroma. Murky purple yellow with minimal head. Moderately sweet plum, cinnamon, nutmeg, malt, and mildly bitter straw flavor. Okay body. Could have done without the spice.

3.1
Moerlein Schützenfest Kölsch
Draft at the Malt House, served in a flight. Pours a clear lighter gold color with a small white head that settles into a thin ring and small islands of film. Notes of toasted and sweet malts, hay, grass, minerals, and wet leaves. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a malty, crisp mouthfeel. Decent example of the style.

3.4
Moerlein Cintucky Common
Draft at the Malt House, served in a flight. Pours a hazy browned amber color with minimal head and a thin off-white ring for a head. Notes of toasted and chocolate and caramel malts, earth, leaves, and pumpernickel. Mediun-bodied, with low carbonation and a toasty, earthy mouthfeel. None of the sour mash garbage that other craft brewers think Kentucky Common was/is. Good take on this once-dead style.

Moerlein Slugger Red Lager
Draft at the Lager House, served in a flight. Pours a barely cloudy copper color with a small khaki head that laces the glass while settling into a lasting film. Notes of caramel, brown sugar, leaves, mild spice, and earth. Not much to it. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonatin and a malty, but sharp mouthfeel with moderate bitterness. Not a particularly memorable beer, but fine for the style.

Moerlein FC Cincinnati Blood Orange IPA
Draft at the Lager House, served in a flight. Pours a hazy marigold color with a small eggshell white head that forms a sheet of lace in the glass and film atop the beer, along with a ring. Loads of blood orange citrus in here, with sweat, nectarines, apricots, dough, vanilla, and cream. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a damp, fruity, sweet mouthfeel. Not the most graceful beer, but interesting enough.

Moerlein Plum Street Wheat
Bottle: Pours a cloudy, milky-white-tallow-orange.....small off-white head. Not a good looking beer.... Peach and plum aroma. Tart plum, wheat malt, citrus taste.... A little harsh in acidity. Not really a fan of this one.

Moerlein FC Cincinnati Blood Orange IPA
Aroma is floral, toffee, hints of dried orange; dirty tarnished bronze color with a scant off-white crown; hmm... toffee maltiness (just a hint of butter), floral-earthy-soapy hoppiness, mild bitterness, dried orange peel; medium body, oily and chewy texture; this beer sounds great and the label is cool, but it’s honestly not very good and pretty much a disappointment for me... Where are the hops? Where is the blood orange? Where is the bitterness? Overall, this is a pretty amateur beer. 12 fl oz bottle from Kroger in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Moerlein Wild Hunt Black IPA
Aroma fruity malt, pine, earthy and citrusy bitters; of very dark brown color with a rocky, lasting, large khaki-colored head; lots of pine, herbal and floral hops, medicinal with some hints of licorice, earthy tobacco, and bitter dried orange peel; moderate bitterness but lots of underlying maltiness for backbone to balance everything out; medium to medium-full body, smooth and slick, low carbonation; pretty good, but less of a Black IPA and more of a hoppy porter, I preferred the Ei8ht Ball Yoga Pants Black IPA over this one slightly. 22 fl oz bottle from The Party Source in Bellevue, KY.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy bright yellow color with a large creamy-soapy bright white head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was sweetish lemon and moderate phenol. The flavor was tart lemon, dry perfume and a bit of phenol. Medium length finish. Medium body. Meh.

Moerlein Plum Street Wheat
bottle @ Jungle Jims / Cincinnati OH --- Aroma of malt and slightly sour fruit. Cloudy dirty light amber color, solid one finger white head that stays, some lace blobs. Taste is malt with wheat that adds a zap of fizz before moving t5o quite distinguishable sour plum that actually counters well with the malt. Certainly different, not sure I could session the flavor over a long night.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a murky white-peach color with a medium sized foamy white head that lingered and left decent lacing. Golden color with a diminished off-white head. Caramel and grain aromas. Hints of light herbal hops. Grainy flavor with a bit of stomach acid. Light caramel and bitter finish. Acidity helps clean things away in the end, but nothing to set down and really enjoy in this one. 3/10

Moerlein Big Piney IPA
Acquired a can in a trade. I have to say this product lives up to its name -it’s definitely big and piney. The piney notes are dominant but this isn’t a hop bomb - there’s more of a malt background than I expected. No disagreeable flavors to mar the presentation. If this were available in my area, I’d be glad to purchase it.

double deuce - nose is caramel, straw, and Belgian candi. Sip adds a hmm, an inquisitive and surprised hmm. Definitely get the wood/barrel, booze, dark fruit, earthy notes, leafy maple and a bit of potpourri. Quite sweet with a surprising medium body. Will be interested in trying this in a few years but I doubt I’m willing to fork out $12+ for another bottle to find out. I’d be curious to try the base beer.
