Liberty Halo Pilsner
Bottle from Greenslopes Cellars 280716. This is one of the best Pilsners that I have had and it it good to see a Pilsner that has a bit of body, substance and colour to it. Musky aroma with a hint of citrus. Fresh and crisp in the mouth with a nice long aftertaste.

From the bottle. Not the hop bomb I expected but a smooth and really well balanced beer with a pine and citrus finish.

Liberty Oh Brother Pale Ale
Draft at Little Beer Quarter in Wellington. Beautiful appearance, clear deep golden with bubbles rising to the top and thick lacing on the glass. Aroma is all NZ hops, overripe pineapple, guava, white grapes, some musty notes. The flavor also crushes it, with some caramel malty sweetness yielding to rough tropical and citrus hop bitterness. Medium bodied, crisp, clean. Killer beer.

500ml bottle at Prohibition in New Plymouth. Hoppy aroma dominates. Poured dark coppery amber with good head (so much the bottle foamed on opening). Mild hoppy bitterness is followed by a lovely malt finish. Nice one - more please.

330ml bottle. Aroma is hoppy/malty. Poured black with generous tan head. Taste is all about the hops with a subtle roasted finish and warming from the 7% ABV. Nice.

Liberty Alpha Obsidian IPA
330ml bottle. Pours a deep black with slightly brown head. A far heavier body than I expected full of caramel, chocolate and other malty notes. The finish has residual bitter hop notes which makes for an excellent beer.

Liberty Elixir Bright Ale
Bottle. Very pale orange with a white head. 3- Aroma of grapefruit, mandarin, grass clippings, some peach. Light bodied, fairly dry. Some hay and minor toasty notes, but a big blast of hops. Mainly citrus, also that sticky grassy/ gooseberry/ grapey thing that NS delivers on a good day. Medium high bitterness. Enough of it and of malt of sufficient quality to show the hops to advantage. Good.

Pint at brewer’s cooperative. Grassy and sweet, and I love it. I really enjoy single hop IPAs and this is no exception.

Liberty Halo Pilsner
Hesitated on buying this one and I do not know why!? I am now patting myself on the back for the purchase and thinking a Lotto ticket for the weekend might be on the cards. Looks the duck’s nuts. Brilliant and radiant, sunny yellow with tight and fine conditioning. Head holds high for the length; a pillowy, snow-white foam that leaves a fine lace. Mmmm, sultry is the fresh and plump, citric tropical nose. Quite sweet with notes of cantaloupe, guava, tangelo, apricot and lemon with a touch orange blossom. Juicy, supple fruit on the palate give a massive tang, pucker and get the saliva glands perked and into work. Squeaky clean, full fruit finish with light fruit peel bitterness and soft pine. Quite vinous in the follow through also. Body is light but it punches above its weight. Subtle malt backbone keeps it quite leveled offering a grainy, sundrenched note to the fruit esters. Drinks with alarming ease. I think this one is a gem. A great ’new age’ Pilsner. Delicious! (33cL, BB 17/11/16, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Liberty Elixir Bright Ale
Delicious, light, quenching ale. Light body carries flavours of peachy tropical-ness, as per the label, but also some lemon/lime and a touch of mineral. The very light body in no way detracts from this beer, it’s extremely well-balanced. Great with fiery chili.

Liberty Halo Pilsner
Poured a clear straw yellow with thin white head dissipating to a few clumpy suds. Aroma is simple lemon and passionfruit hops. Tastes the same as it smells with light sweetness moving to mix of sour-saltiness. Light-medium body with moderately long finish. Quite enjoyable and a good change from heavier brews and the multitude of insipid lagers and pilsners.

2016-06-01. Hazy orange body good sized beige head and lace. Aroma of fruity hops. Light lemon. Flavour is lightly bitter and quite fruity up front. Muddled but pleasant citrus and light green hops in the background. Smooth average to light bodied palate, soft to low carbonation. Grows on me after muted first impression. Tasty but needs a touch more weight/carbonation. 7/4/7/3/14 On cask? at Vulture’s Lane, Auckland, NZ.

2016-06-01. Crisp yellow body modest off white head and nice lace. 3+ Aroma of herbaceous greenery over mild fruit. Flavour is moderately bitter up front, strong flavour of pineapple and an almost soapy herbaceous fruit quality. Average bodied palate, effervescent carbonation. Shows great highlights but down wrong turns (is that really what I wrote or is that an autocorrect?) detract. 6/3-4/6/3/13+ On tap at Vulture’s Lane, Auckland, NZ.

2016-05-10. Crisp pale yellow body small creamy off white head and lace. 3+ Aroma is surprisingly green, like dried fir or spruce needles, fruit and citrus is eventually teased out. 6+ Flavour is mild, lightly bitter, interesting fruit melange defies a good description from me. Lightly grainy/astringency in the finish lingers, to its detriment. Smooth average to light bodied palate, soft carbonation. 6/3/6/3/12 On tap at Brew, Rotorua, NZ.

2016-05-05. Crisp orange-amber body with a nice off-white head that fades. 3++ Aroma is hoppy, moderate resin and greenery. Flavour is moderately hoppy and bitter throughout, moderate citrus gives way to greener hop character that is less to my liking. Green veg character grows as you go. Average plus bodied palate, moderate carbonation. 3+ More citrus on the label than in the beer unfortunately. Maybe not fresh? No date on the bottle, which seems to be the norm in NZ so it makes it tough to decide what is on purpose vs. freshness issues. 7/4/7/3/14 Bottle at Brothers, Auckland, NZ.

Bottle from Greenslopes Cellars 300516. This is another good beer from Liberty Brewing Company and the aroma is filled with amazing hop aromas mixed in with some pine needles. A beer that is easy on the eye is always good and the burnt orange colour reminds me of sunset. Chewy in the mouth with some great flavours and a sweet finish. Sure to cause an uprising amongst the beer crowd.

500mL bottle, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma has loads of kiwi upfront, with light piney and citrus fruity hops. Flavour screams out tropical fruits, especially kiwi, maybe a little mango and cantaloupe, and pronounced citrus hops. Despite the fruitiness, it has very low residual sweetness. Excellent.

Not quite sure what this collaboration honours - possibly marble benchtops. Bottle. Bright gold with a fine white head that lasts very well. Aroma of mandarins and kumquats, a little lime, gooseberry, light bread and hay. Nice gently wafty hops, but the hint of quality malt underneath lifts it a fair bit for me. Just medium bodied, no unintegrated alcohol. Quite sweet with mandarins, lime and some honeydew melon over bready malt that’s not quite as rich as suggested by the aroma. I suppose others will like what I found a little too clean. Moderate bitterness with fruity flavours hanging around. Good stuff.
